Chapter 9

Shippo's mind was in a haze of confusion. Never, since the loss of his parents, had he felt so alone and unsure of his actions.

Without thinking, Shippo dashed through the forest. Adrenaline and fear fueled his actions, no matter how small he was, he'd reach Kagome, and if Kouga
dared hurt her, he would die. Some way he would defeat and kill the wolf prince for harming his adoptive mother.

'This is all my fault! I should have went with you to the well. Dammit, why didn't Inuyasha smell Kouga?'

Tiny fox feet and front claws helped to push his small form through the dark woods at amazing speeds. He wasn't concerned about dangers that lurked in the
shadows, his thoughts were focused on one person: Kagome.
Shippo looked like an auburn flash to the naked eye as he dodged tree branches, boulders and other objects that littered the country side. It would take him
until dawn to reach the wolf tribes cave. It didn't matter how far he had to travel, all he knew was that he had to find Kagome.

Kouga yawned, stretching his arms high above his head. A breeze blew past the coverings of the front entrance bringing the smells of his tribe along with forest
life and his den to his nose 'Something is missing....' He looked around 'Where's Kagome?!' The wolf prince dashed from the bed and headed out the door. Was
she trying to escape again? How long has she been gone? His mind was in a frenzy as he searched the den for her.

After not finding Kagome inside, he decided to get Guinta and Hakkagu so they could look for her.

"Guinta!" Kouga yelled, "have you seen Kagome?"

"Yeah, she's with Aika. I think Kagome is helping her clean."

Kouga ran to Aika and Chuugi's den. There was Kagome, folding laundry and talking with the expecting female. They both looked somewhat stunned at
Kouga's sudden appearance.

"Good morning." Aika tried to bow but nearly fell over from the weight of her abdomen. Kagome caught her before she landed on her head.

"What's up Kouga? Are you feeling ok?" Kouga looked disheveled and was panting from running around looking for her. It wasn't the exertion form the run
as much as the fear of her leaving that winded him.

"Why didn't you tell me you were coming here?" he demanded.

"You were sleeping. Why should I have to ask permission to leave the cave anyway?"

"You don't need permission, but I want to know where you are at all times! What if something happened and I wasn't there to help you Kagome? No matter
how strong you are, you are still a human and not much of an opponent for a youkai!"

It was obvious to both girls that Kouga was angry. "Please don't be mad at her Kouga, it was my fault. I saw her sitting outside the den and I asked her to
help me with some chores while Chuugi went on patrol. I didn't stop to think how worried you would be."

Kagome watched him closely, waiting for his reaction to Aika's appology. Her eyes started to roam over the masculine features of his face, down to the open
top of his sleeping yukata. His chest wasn't overly hairy, but it was muscular from hard work. The look of his tanned skin, long black hair falling wildly around
his face and shoulders against the crisp white color of the yukata made him very appealing to the eye.

Kouga was just about to answer Aika when a new scent assaulted his senses. With a wicked gleam in his eyes, his attention turned to Kagome, "Something
wrong love?"

'Grrr.... I hate that cocky attitude of his......' "What are you talking about wolf?" Kagome was embarrassed, she hadn't intended to become aroused by Kouga's
appearance, but some things a girl just can't . .

"I think you know what I'm referring to woman..." He took a step toward her, looking seductive and smelling of male lust. The human girl was obviously
uncomfortable, her cheeks were turning red from the awkward situation.

"Hey......... Kouga..... um, why don't you go ahead and get dressed and when Kagome's done, I'll make sure she goes back to your den!" Aika gave the tribe
leader a wide pleading smile, hoping he'd take the hint and leave for now.

Kouga glanced at Kagome noticing her uneasiness and decided to let her go, for now. 'Hehe.... so Aika is trying to defend the human. That's good. I know
Kagome, when she becomes friends with someone, she always sticks by them and would never do anything to hurt that person. The sooner Kagome develops
bonds to my pack, the sooner she'll agree to be my mate.'

The corners of his mouth slowly tugged upward in a grin that caused Kagome's heart to speed up, 'What's he thinking about to make him smile in such a
devious way.......'

"That wbe fbe fine Aika. I'm happy that Kagome has agreed to help you, after all, a female in your condition needs as must rest and assistance with daily chores
as possible. Just don't try to run off Kagome, I'd hate to use the "D" word on you." Kouga straightened his yukata and turned to leave, "Oh, and Kagome,
when you get back we will have to discuss that lovely a you your boas eas emitting." He winked at her and sauntered out with his tail swooshing back and
forth behind him.

"Aika, we haven't known each other that long, but do you think Chuugi would mind if I moved in?" Kagome nervously wrung her hands together.

"Don't worry, I've never heard of Kouga taking a female by force, but by the way his tail moved, I'd say you got his full attention!" Aika laughed at the
horrified look on Kagome's face

"You are not helping! How can I go back to his den knowing that he thinks I want him physically!? Was my smell that strong? I am such an idiot!" Kagome
slapped her hand over her forehead.

"Stop panicking Kagome. There was just a trace of your arousal, it was almost nonexistent. Of course, I can't blame really you, he looks good, even in the
morning! If I didn't have a mate, I'd be tempted by him."

"Aarrggghh....... I don't EVER want to see him again!" Aika latched onto the girls arm and led her to the kitchen.

"Come on, you need some tea to calm those ner"

"Thanks Aika. Ya know, if it weren't for you, I would be dead by now. There is no way I'd stay with Kouga, no matter how nice he can be. It's hard to
explain...... I don't hate him but I'm not happy with being forced to live with him either. I also don't like him in the way he wants me to, maybe if things were
different and we had a chance to properly to to know each other then I would be attracted to him. Truth is, Kouga is a nice looking man, I mean, wolf."

She listened to the girl talk about her feelings. Kagome explained how she traveled trough the well, freed Inuyasha from the Goshinboku, went to school, tried
to have a social life, how she met Miroku, Sango, Shippo and her first meeting with Kouga. Aika smiled as Kagome talked about his arrogance and kid
napping her because of her ability to see the Shikon shards. Aika felt sorry for the miko, this human's life was filled with confusion and loneliness.

"When Chuugi first brought me to live with this pack, I was scared and lonely. I didn't know anyone else here and I still don't have any close friends. But, now
you are here and I finally have a real friend. I feel like we've known each other forever."

Aika marveled at how this young human girl, who was just a pup in youkai years, had knowledge and maturity far beyond her years.

Kagome looked sad when she spoke of her friends in the future and repeated the talk she and Sango had before Kouga took her. "I feel alone in my time and
even more alone here. Don't get me wrong Aika, I like the pack, but I am not a wolf. They are just humoring Kouga with false acceptance of me because they
don't want him to be angry. I will never be fully accepted."

Aika reached out to grasp Kagome's hand, "I accept youou aou are the first human I have had a chance to talk to and get to know. Sometimes people and
youkai let differences blind them, but I don't see the differences between us, only the similarities." Aika smiled at the girl, secretly wishing that she would fall in
love with Kouga so her new friend would stay.

The young miko was about to respond, when alarming howls echoed through the mountains.

Both heads turned to look out of Aika's den. Males were running toward pathpaths not far from Kouga's den. The wolf prince stood defensively facing the
wooded area that surrounded his lands. "Whoever you are, come out now!"

Kagome made her way to the group of warriors. He could smell her approach, "Stay back Kagome!"

"What is it Kouga?" she shouted to him.

"Kitsune...." the hair on his neck stand on end. It was obvious he was ready for a fight.

Kouga and the other wolves watched as the trees rustled, their highest branches started to bend as several huge objets hovered above the tree tops.

They appeared to be giant floating youkai, with teeth barred and angry roars resounding over he country side. Many of the wolf demons ran for cover as the
floating youkai cast long shadows across the wolves territory. Kagome stood and watched, 'Kitsune? Could it be..... no, he's just a kit.'

"Why would the Kitsunes dare attack us? We kicked them off this land 10 years ago. They should feel lucky we didn't wipe out their entire clan!." Chuugi exclaimed.

Just as Kouga was forming a response, the demon's bodies exploded with a loud POP, sending a thin cloud of smoke in every direction.

"Kagome!!" All eyes looked skyward as a small bundle descended and landed in Kagome's arms. His small body almost knocked her over with the force from
his fall.

"Shippo! I can't believe you found me! Where are the others?" Kagome scanned the forest for movement.

"They don't know where I am. I couldn't sleep last night so I decided to look around by the well. I found your and Kouga's scent, so, I came to see if you were
with him." He looked her over, turning her face from one side to the other, searching for injuries. "Are you ok Kagome, did he hurt you, how did you get here,
what about Inuyasha, why.."

Kagome hugged the little kit close, "Woah Shippo, slow down. I'm alright, but we'll talk about this later. I'm so proud of you for being that smart, but..." she
held him away from her so he could clearly see her face, "what have I told you about going into the forest at night ALONE?! And, what if I hadn't caught you
when your illusion wore off? You might have been killed!"

Kouga growled, he was becoming annoyed by the reunion of Kagome and the little pest. That kitsune meant trouble for him. If he left, he'd tell the others
where the miko was. For once, Kouga didn't have to worry about Inuyasha, but the monk and the demon slayer were powerful in their own way.

He grabbed the ball of fur by the shirt collar and yanked him away from Kagome, "Look runt, I went through a lot of trouble to get this far and I won't allow
you or anyone else to take Kagome away from me!" Kouga drew back his razor sharp claws ready to strike the young kitsune, 'I know she'll stop me.....'

"No, Kouga don't hurt him. Shippo is my adopted son, he's my kit!" she took hold of his arm, eyes pleading for mercy, "Please, let him go." Her deep brown
orbs welled up with new tears as her sad eyes bore into his, begging him for mercy.

"Yeah ya big bully, put me down!" Shippo swung his fists and feet at Kouga, missing the target by a mile since his arms and legs were so short.

'Great! Now she's going to think I'm a complete asshole because I'm threatening a child!' He looked at the frightened kit and then Kagome, "Fine. But, if
either one of you try anything then the kit goes, and I don't mean back to your friends!" Kouga shoved Shippo back into Kagome's arms and stalked off with
fellow pack members.

Kagome took Shippo into the den and gave him a hot bath. She laughed while pulling twigs and grass out of his hair and fluffy tail, "You look like you got
dragged through the forest Shippo! I think you found every prickle bush around." Her warm smiled soothed him like nothing else could.

Since they were alone, Kagome decided to explain everything that happened from the time she left to go home to this morning when he arrived. Shippo was
perturbed that Inuyasha would trade her like some object that no longer served a purpose and could be replaced. He promised all kinds of violent pay backs
when he next saw the hanyou.

The kit struggled to keep his eyes open. An entire night of running was starting to take affect on him. Kagome wrapped Shippo in dry towel, after brushing his
hair and tail, and laid him on the large futon that she and Kouga shared. She gently rubbed his back and watched him curled up in a ball, instantly falling asleep.

Kouga entered the cave looking none to happy and handed her a small fur outfit fo the kit. He walked into the one room that she still hadn't explored, carrying
a fluffy futon and blanket under his arm, "The kit can sleep in the pup dens."

"What pup dens?" Kagome asked as she approached the doorway. She followed him to the nearest room, where he laid the bedding in one corner of the small
room and a candle on the other side, in case he wanted to keep it lit at night. He walked past her as she continued to look at the attached room.

It was like one big maze, all the rooms were connected by circular rock formations in the walls. She looked in one and saw another room that had to openings
that led to another vacant area. Each room was no more than 10x10, but perfect for sleeping. Apparently, wolf cubs weren't like the children in her time. They
didn't need large areas to lounge in. The pups spent most of their time outside playing or learning to fight and hunt.

She heard foot steps and returned to where she first came in. Kouga placed the sleeping kit on the futon and ruffled his hair in an affectionate gesture. Kagome
smiled, watching the "big bad wolf" prove that he wasn't so bad after all.

The wolf prince stood, suddenly noticing there was someone behind him. He saw Kagome look at the kitsune and then back to him. Her smile was warm and
genuine.

He reacehed out, taking her hand and lead her to the kitchen. "I'm hungry, how about you?" he asked.

"Yeah, but this time I'll cook. What would you like?" Kagome asked.

"Hmm... how about ... eggs and biscuits! I can't make a descent biscuit to save my hide, but I love them."

Kagome laughed, "Alright, but we don't have any eggs."

"I'll get some, don't go anywhere." Kouga ran out of the cave leaving Kagome to start their meal. She mixed the biscuit dough and formed it into balls, placing
them not too close together. The cave had a make shift stove toward the back of the kitchen, it sat low, but was made of metal. She had placed logs beneath it
and started a fire to heat it.

Kouga came back with a bowl full of eggs. As he entered the dining area, the scene of Kagome cooking breakfast with the light shining down on her from the
air vent made this human girl look angelic. He was captivated by her beauty and purity. 'This is my dream... she is finally here, in the kitchen, the home I made
for us. I love her more than anything in this world....."

Kagome glanced behind her, spotting him while placing the biscuits in the oven. His eyes held a far away expression full of thought and wonderment, "Are
those the eggs?" She walked over to him taking the bowl out of his hands. "Do you want these scrambled, fried or EEPS!!"

She froze when his strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her close. Sharp fangs nipped at her ear and neck, "Kouga........ what the hell are you
doing? I'm going to drop this bowl if you don't let go!"

He allowed Kagome to put the bowl down, but Kouga was far from done. The wolf gathered Kagome in his arms, ignoring her words of protest and
squirming, and gave her a kiss that she would not soon forget.

His lips were soft, holding a silent plea for her affection and submission. Kagome fisted her hands against his chest, her mind was shutting down as she melted
into him. Kouga wouldn't let go, he couldn't. This was his dream, to have her and a pup, in their home living a life blessed with love and family.

"I love you Kagome." Kouga leaned his forehead against hers, his blue eyes looking into her sparkling brown orbs that reflected her confusion and inner
struggles. Her scent was changing, he knew she was attracted to him and that his kiss affected her more than she would ever admit.

Clawed hands caressed cloth covered arms, working their way down to her tiny waist. Her body was stiff as Kouga massaged her abdomen. His breath hitched
when she touched his hand and held it in place, hindering his movements.

"Kouga ...... stop, please." Kagome's voice was barely audible but her eyes were wide and held fear.

"What are you so afraid of Kagome?" he questioned softly. There was no anger in his words, "Are you worried that you will start to like me and want to stay?
I know that my touches arouse you, so why can't we continue?" His lips left a burning trail from below her earlobe to the base of her neck. ll bll be gentle with
you." Kouga whispered in her ear.

Kagome tried to answer a few times as her mouth opened to speak, then closed. She wasn't sure what to say. Did she want to hurt him or try to maintain a
friendship with the wolf. In both cases the desired outcome was to be set free, but at what price?
