Blood Stained
Chapter 97: Surprise Visits
"Morning."
Kagome blinked, the powerful rays of the sun dancing on her face. She tried to shield her face with her hand but only barely succeeded. Why were the blinds open? Once she finally managed to open them, she was grace with the sight of Sesshomaru's face. He was leaning on his hand, watching her sleep. Apparently, he did not sleep, again. It was her fifth night sleeping in his house in in the past two weeks. He did not sleep most of the nights. She did not worry; it was normal for him, he was a youkai.
"Morning," she said as she snuggled closer to him.
It was not the worst thing. At first she thought she might feel strange being in a home that was not hers but - it was home. Not her only home but it was a home. Sesshomaru did everything he could to make her as comfortable as possible. And they did a wonderful nursery for Kiyoshi. Every time he was here, he slept fine. Though she was to understand that he slept there a couple of time while she was in her coma. However, it was never furnished or decorated. Sesshomaru did not have the artistic trait.
He let his fingers glide down her bare arm, tickling her skin.
The sex was great, better than it ever was. She always thought there was connection, a love that could not get any greater but now it was different. He was taking, she was taking and they were meddling into one person. Heightened emotions, swirls of heating passions. He took over her whole body and she let him. It had been a while since she relinquished control and she was surprised at how much she could enjoy it. Every time they were together, every time they shared this connection she became more comfortable in her body and with their intimacy.
"Is he still sleeping?"
Sesshomaru sat up, showing her his naked, muscular chest at the same time, and closed his eyes to listen to his son's breathing pattern. After a second, he laid back down by her side.
"I believe so, yes."
She was all tangled in the blankets and happy that she could remain that way a bit longer.
"Breakfast in bed?" he offered.
He spoiled her. He wanted her to love her life here. He wanted her to never leave his side again; he was getting greedy. The first week she only slept over twice and now he had already persuaded her to come over three times and the week was not yet over. During the Feudal Era he spent a majority of his time traveling, never truly having a home. Of course, he had his castle but it was not as though he stayed there and it was not a true home; he was alone there, no one to keep him company. This time it was different. He had a home, a son and a mate. He planned on enjoying it all.
Plus, Kagome did not seem to mind since she said yes every time.
"I'm not hungry," she said as she turned around to lay on her back. She did not want him to get up and cater to her every night. Once she was hungry enough, she would go down and make herself some breakfast. Although that was something she needed to work on; her cooking skills. Especially if she wanted to be the same kind of mom as hers; one who made cute little lunches for her kids before they left for school.
"What would you like to do?"
"Can we stay like this?"
It was perfect. This was one of those perfect moments she wanted to cherish and keep with her. That way she would have them for days were things were a little harder. PLus, she was trying to spend a few less nights at his house. It was great, it truly was, but as per usual she was waiting for the other shoe to drop. When was the last time they got two whole weeks without anything bad happening to them? It was almost suspicious. She realized that she could not spend her entire life waiting for something bad to happen but old habits died hard. It was difficult for her to settle in and relax.
"We are going to be fine," he said as though he read her mind. And some days he did.
Ever since he merged with his beast their connection only got stronger which was to be expected. Sometimes, her thoughts echoed through his mind and other times, his feelings took control of her. It would require some getting used to but it was nothing that they minded. And it only helped them understand each other better. Now Kagome could tell when Sesshomaru felt…less like himself.
He could still experience the changes but he could feel more and more like himself - or actually his new self. He was settling into his personality. Neither did he or Kagome appeared to have a problem with it. Sometimes they were both surprised by his actions or thoughts but it was nothing unusual.
"I know. I wanna tell myself that but - there's something we haven't taken care of yet…"
"I have tried to call my mother. Though I cannot say I am sad that she did not return any of my calls."
"Yeah, I didn't think she would."
Four phone calls. And she never called back. It irritated Kagome; after everything she did to them she could have at least the decency to return or call - or at worst show up. She always knew when to show up when nobody wanted her around and now she was being a bitch? She sighed and shook her head.
"I don't know why I thought we could use her help."
"Because you are a kind woman and you wanted to help our son." He snaked his arms around her. "You cannot blame yourself for this. My mother is horrible person."
"I just don't like that he's stuck like this."
"Neither do I but do not worry. If danger come, we will protect him."
"Can we protect him from the jewel?"
She could never save herself from it - or even Sesshomaru. If it did something, if it used her son, she would be completely powerless to do anything about it. And it would kill her.
"We will." He would not let anything happen to his son - ever.
Unfortunately, before they could continue their conversation, the sound of the doorbell began to echo through the house. Kagome frowned; would in the world even had the address? Would you come to see Sesshomaru?
"Are you expected someone?"
When she turned her head to look at Sesshomaru, he was not even listening to her. Instead he was glaring at the wall with a frown on his face.
"You know who it is?"
"Unfortunately, yes."
He pushed the blankets aside and then grabbed his boxer from the ground. He quickly slipped them on and then took his robe from behind the door. He put it on and rapidly headed down the stairs. If Kagome was not curious before, she was now. She imitated his actions and bolted out of the bed. She grabbed whatever clothes she found laying on the floor. She quickly put them on and followed him downstairs.
"You were not supposed to arrive today," she heard him say from the top of the stairs.
Who did he invite?
The little mystery made her hurry her steps. Once she arrived downstairs, she obtained no answer since Sesshomaru's frame was hiding whoever he was speaking with which made her frown.
"Sesshomaru?" she tried.
This got his attention and he turned around - which unblocked her view. Who she saw was not who she expected.
"Kouga?" she said in complete disbelief.
"Well, if it isn't my woman."
Sesshomaru let a small growl escape as he moved in between the two of them.
"Come on doggie, I'm just kidding."
Although it was just a joke, considering Kagome's state of clothes, he decided against hugging her. He did not need a pissed off Sesshomaru after him when he had just arrived back into Japan.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in disbelief as she took a few steps forward, completely ignoring Sesshomaru's jealous attitude. Although, she did not quite mind seeing that side of him.
"He's not supposed to be here."
"Yet," Kouga corrected. "He called me."
Alright, now she was absolutely confused. She knew that Sesshomaru no longer hated Kouga and that most of their little attitude game was just for show but she did not think he would go as far as to call him over.
"He's our new babysitter."
And all Kagome could do was chuckle.
"Kouga? A babysitter? Our babysitter."
"I'm great with kids."
"You've babysitted before?"
"Well, not exactly. I mean I've looked after your kid."
"I don't think that qualifies."
"I trust him," Sesshomaru finally said, even if it called him to say so.
He promised her they would find someone they could trust. He did not trust anyone - especially not youkais. He also knew what the jewel could do to someone. When it came down to it he realized there was only one person he trusted with Kagome and Kiyoshi and it was the damn wolf. He was annoying as hell and he kept calling her his woman but he knew he would protect her. Plus, he was a bit too attached to even make an attempt on Kagome.
"Plus, I figured it would be good practice."
"Practice?" she inquired, still completely puzzled.
"I mean not yet, it's a little soon and we haven't even settled in anywhere."
"Y- wait. You and Kai?"
He shrugged his shoulders, a blush forming on his cheeks. "It's recent. I mean, we're not mated or anything. I just - she's nice."
Kagome broke into the biggest smile before running in his direction. She jumped and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him. "I'm really happy for you."
He chuckled before returning the embrace. "Thanks, Kag."
Then, after she pulled away from the embrace, she smacked his arm. "Why didn't you bring her?"
"Hey!" he complained. "She is coming. She'll be here in a few days."
"Perhaps you should have waited for her," Sesshomaru commented dryly.
"Man, he really doesn't like it when things don't go his way huh? I don't remember him being so moody."
Kagome could not help the laugh that escaped her. "I think he gets that from his other side."
"His other side?"
This was one news she was happy to share. "No more beast."
"Are you serious?"
She nodded vigourously.
"That's great. I'm really happy for you guys! We gotta celebrate."
"It is still morning here."
"Right. This whole time thing. Got me all messed up."
"Why don't you join us for breakfast?" she politely offered.
"Thanks, I'm starving."
"Do not invite him in."
"You invited him first," she reminded with a twinkle in her eyes.
Sesshomaru scoffed but there was a smile hiding on his lips. He waited for Kouga and Kagome to walk in front of him and then he closed the door behind him.
"Is he always like this now? Wow."
"I can hear you, wolf boy," he warned.
"At least you haven't lost your hearing yet," Kouga teased.
And now he would spend the next few hours trying to remind himself why he chose to invite the wolf into his home. It appeared to be such a good idea at the time, the perfect solution to their problem. Perhaps it was one mistake he could blame on his new personality?
The next few days were going to be hell.
-B-
A day went by, filled with more events and chatters than Kagome expected. She thought Kouga would be sleeping in Sesshomaru's room but her mate had already made arrangement for a hotel. She tried to say it was a little insensitive but he told her he was not sharing his home with a wolf - and Kouga seemed to prefer a hotel as well, so Kagome let the issue go. She forgot how much she missed her friend and it was nice to have a laugh.
Because of all this, she found herself spending the night at Sesshomaru yet again. It was too late for her to leave and she was completely exhausted; it was the best option. Not that it was a terrible solution.
"But - isn't … I mean won't Kouga have to go back?" she asked as she fluffed back her pillow. "He can't stay here and be a permanent babysitter. He's got his life, he's got Kai."
"No," he answered as he walked into the bedroom. "But they have not decided where to settle down. I do not believe that Australia was meant to be his permanent home and Kai would like to re-locate as well."
She let the red pillow slip from her hold. "How do you know all this?"
"I have spoken with him," he answered as thought it was completely normal for him to do so.
"You talked to Kouga. Like on the phone?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"During the past weeks."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did not want to share it with you until I knew if it would work."
"And he said yes just like that?"
"I believe he missed Japan."
"I think it's nice you called him."
"We are not friends."
"Of course, you're not," she said, sarcasm obvious in her voice.
"I trust him."
"So do I."
And then silence fell and they began getting into bed as if it had been their routine their whole life. Kagome wrapped herself in the blankets until the warmth of them started to envelop her.
"I hope him and Kai get mated."
"They would be a good match."
"He deserves to be happy. He's a nice guy."
"Hn."
He knew the wolf was no treat but he did not know if he would qualify him as a nice guy. He was an annoyance most of the time but he proved himself.
"Oh please, you called him. He's your friend."
He eyed her. "You are playing a dangerous game."
She giggled, go along with him. "Oh, and what happens if I keep going?"
Kagome did not miss the smile that formed on his lips before he hurried and used his speed to trap her beneath his body. "Would you like to find out?" he inquired in a dangerously low tone.
Her entire body shivered in anticipation beneath his and her lips parted. "Maybe."
The invitation was too much for him to resist and he lowered his head to brush his lips against hers. She rapidly snaked her arms around his waist, digging her fingers into his back. He did not let the torture go on too long as he finally took her bottom lip between his teeth, gently nibbling on it. She felt her body melting beneath him, already responding to his call. The bond was useful in such situation; he knew what to do with her body without her even having to speak. He touched the right spot, he kissed where he should and he caressed her favourite areas.
He moved both of his hands to her ass and lifted her up, giving himself better access between her legs. His erection brushed up against her throbbing core and she moaned.
Unfortunately for her that was as far as she got until the sound of the door was heard. They both still and Kagome tilted her head to the side, trying to get a view of their bedroom's door.
"Kouga?" she asked Sesshomaru.
He shook his head. Much worst. Unfortunately for him he did not even have time to move off Kagome that their intruder was in their bedroom. All Kagome had time to see was a blur of purple and silver. And then she saw her.
Mizuki.
"You called?" she inquired with a smirk as she put her hands on her hips.
Why was everybody showing up uninvited today? Was that the new thing and nobody thought to mention it to him? An exasperated sigh escaped Sesshomaru as he untangled himself from Kagome. He could easily get up since there were no embarrassing evidence to hide; his mother's presence took care of that rather rapidly.
"Weeks ago," he pointed out as he closed the distance between them.
"I've been busy." She looked at Kagome with glimmering eyes. "And apparently, so have you."
"What I do is none of your business."
"Then why did you call me?"
Because he had a moment of stupidity. And because she was the only one who could help. Because nothing could ever be simple in his life and everything always came with a price. Even happiness and peace of mind.
"Your services are required."
"Do you need me to summon your beast again?" she teased.
"That's no longer a problem," Kagome pitched in as she threw her legs over the bed, ready to stand up. They were not having this conversation without her. That woman had made her life hellish enough and now she could no longer do anything against them. Kagome was not about to miss this conversation.
"Oh? What have you done?"
"We merge," Sesshomaru supplied.
Even Mizuki was not able to hide her surprise. It was probably not part of the scenario she made in her mind. Sesshomaru could not help but think back to their previous conversation, the one where she wanted to break the matin between Kagome and him. That was not going to happen. And there was absolutely nothing his mother could do about it - she had even lost her only argument. Gone were the days where she could torment them and use their weakness against them.
"You did what?"
"Merge. I love him. All of him," Kagome added, simply to spite her.
"You are not completely useless," Mizuki said with a smirk. "However, I doubt you are happy."
"I am happy. Or at least I was before you came here."
This woman used people's pain for her own twisted pleasure. She was the worst kind - and she would never be forgiven for what she did. Kagome should have been able to deal with the beast on her own, when she was ready, just like she had done recently and not because someone was forcing her. Kagome was only glad that she could not do anything against her. She was too strong to be doubted again, too strong to let her get into her head. She made that mistake once and would not let it happen again.
"Feisty," Mizuki commented as she tore her eyes from Kagome and inspected the room.
She was surprised when her son called. At first, she thought he might have lost his mind and so she did not answer him just yet. When his efforts to contact her remained, she thought he had perhaps changed his mind and realized that the best solution was to break his mating. It was one of the main reason why she came all the way over here. Unfortunately, it did not seem to be the case. Her son managed to make himself whole while keeping the girl by his side. It was quite a feat.
"Where is my grandson?"
Kagome wanted to tell her to stay away from Kiyoshi but she could not. After all, they called her over so that she could help with him - she would not be kept away from him. Unfortunately.
"Not yet."
"Oh?" she said with a smile. "Very well. But if you do not share with me the reason behind my presence here, I have no reason to stay."
He did not want to have this conversation like this, almost in the middle of the night, but his mother always made every situation extremely complicated. "We required your knowledge on a certain subject."
"You have said that already," she said, her eyes narrowing. "Spit it out, I do not have all night."
"It's about the jewel," Kagome supplied.
"What about the jewel dear?" Although it was meant to be an affectionate word, Kagome knew Mizuki did not mean it that way.
"It's inside Kiyoshi."
This time, she frowned. "That thing is inside my grandson?"
She was very possessive about Kiyoshi, which usually displeased Kagome but in this case, it could prove to be a good thing. Whatever gave her motivation to help Kiyoshi, she would take it. Though she was afraid she might see it as an access into their lives. She was not welcomed into their home and that would not change.
"How did this happen?" Mizuki demanded.
"A wish gone wrong."
Her eyes narrowed on Kagome. "I suppose it was your doing?"
She wanted to say no, she wanted to prove she was not the weak human girl Mizuki thought her to be but in this case, there was no point in lying. It was her fault and she would have to carry this guilt around with her for the rest of her life. "I didn't mean for it to happen. I was simply trying to save your son's life."
"And you endangered your own son in the process."
"You're not exactly mother of the year. You don't have the right to judge what I did."
"I look out for my son, above anything else."
"That's why you tried to make him miserable?"
"I was only thinking of his happiness. Not yours."
"I make him happy."
"So you've fooled him to think."
"Enough," Sesshomaru said as he placed himself between them. He began to feel Kagome's aura surge and he knew it was better to put a halt to the little verbal spat. Kagome might be powerful but so was his mother and he was pretty sure nobody was going to survive if these two went against each other. The point of this horrible conversation with his mother was to unite to help Kiyoshi. Clearly their issues would never be solved but that did not matter. Kiyoshi was all that mattered.
"The jewel is not yet harmful to Kiyoshi. It would be best to get rid of it before it becomes a threat."
"And what would you have me do with it?"
"Put it back in my body."
Mizuki arched an eyebrow, obviously pleased with Kagome's suggestion. "It might be the best idea you have had so far, dear."
Obviously it would please her to put Kagome in harm's way.
Sesshomaru could feel his patience running thin. There were only so many insults he could take. Kagome was his mate and it was difficult to stand there while his mother kept on bashing her every time she spoke. "You will respect her. She is my mate."
"You chose that."
"And you have no say in it."
"We'll see."
This time, it was Sesshomaru's turn to glare. He took a threatening step forward, his stance shifting into a defensive one. "Are you threatening me, mother?"
"Do you believe you could overthrow me?"
"Do not challenge me. I am not the same."
"I can see that."
He dared to be disrespectful and he challenged her authority more than he used to in the past. Last time, she was able to bring the beast out of him because it wanted to come out. Apart, they were weaker but now he was back to being himself - his whole self. And she could see it, she could see just how much like his father he was. Inutaisho was a strong youkai and Sesshomaru was no different. If only he tapped into his full potential he could surpass her - and his father put together. But he would never be able to do that, not as long as she was by his side. Although, it felt like she would never leave. Despite Mizuki's best efforts, Kagome stayed by her son's side. She fought. The girl was a stubborn little thing, there was no denying it. Too bad she was human. She could have made a fine mate.
"And what makes you think I will help," she said, keeping her eyes locked on Sesshomaru.
"He is your grandson."
"He is half-youkai."
"He is blood."
"Inuyasha was your blood and you did not care," she reminded him.
It was not the same. He was a brother - a half brother. Sesshomaru was different back then, he harboured a hatred for humans because they took his father away from him. He watched his father throw his life away for a mere human. He could not understand back then but now he did. He knew how someone could die to protect the person they loved.
"It was not the same."
"It is the exact same thing."
"You care for him," Kagome reminded her.
"I do," she replied, amused. "Despite your genes, he turned out to be quite strong. He is lucky to have my son has a father."
"He gets a lot from me."
"Really? I did not see my grandson as weak."
"I am not weak."
Kagome's powers were tingling at the tip of her fingers, waiting to explode out of her. She wanted to blast the damn woman away. She wanted to watch her crash into that wall. She always brought out the worst in her. She knew what to say to hurt her and to anger her. She meant to not let it get to her but it was a hard feat to accomplish.
"Kagome," Sesshomaru warned.
Thou shall not try to kill their mother-in-law no matter how much of a bitch she was. That had to be a universal rule right? She was a good person, not an angry woman. Kagome took a deep breathe before lowering her fists and calming herself.
"Can you help or not," she asked through clenched teeth.
Mizuki paused to think it over. "Maybe."
"Maybe yes or maybe no?"
"Yes."
"Then do it."
"What do I get out of it?"
"You get to help your grandson."
It should be enough. Considering all the bad things she did in her lifetime, she could at least help her own blood.
"Now, now. Do not act as if I never did anything for you. Did I ask for something in return when I brought that little girl back to life?" She was not sure why she did it. She did remember the look in her son's eyes that day and how much he reminded her of his father. That had not changed. "I am not a monster, Sesshomaru. I simply want your happiness."
"My happiness is here."
"We shall see."
"So you will help then?"
"Yes. For my grandson, not for you."
"I don't care, I just want him to be safe."
"Then we agree." Kagome did not want Mizuki to do anything for her anyway. It was better if she did not owe her anything - she felt it could be dangerous.
"How will you get rid of the jewel?" Sesshomaru questioned.
"I will not fix the issue tonight. I will need some time. The jewel is an old artefact and filled with power. It went inside Kiyoshi because it wanted to, because it thought it would be the safest place for it. Do not make the mistake of thinking it's random. The jewel always has its survival in mind." Sh shrugged. "It simply did not think Kagome was enough to protect it. The next compatible host was Kiyoshi."
Did she mean it could not go into Sesshomaru? Was Kiyoshi a potential host because he was Kagome's son or because of his holy powers? It was not as though they figured out what exactly their son was yet. It was one of the remaining mysteries.
It was obvious that Kagome was not a good host for the jewel back then. There was too much darkness within her and she was weak. Yes, the jewel could have easily corrupted her, manipulated her but could she have protected it? She might have tried but she would have probably failed. Kiyoshi was a perfect choice with his combination of youkai and holy powers.
"But you will be able to help him?"
"I do not make promises I cannot keep. And I never fail."
"Are you sure about that?" Kagome inquired, taunting her. "I am still here."
"For the time being. It is not over yet." She exhaled before clapping her hands together. "Now that we got this out of the way, may I see my grandson? After all, I will be the one to sae him from your mistake. I should be able to see him."
Kagome could not really argue with her and they did need her help - no matter how much it drove her crazy. Mizuki would have to win this round but it did not matter because in the end, Kagome would have her family - Kiyoshi and Sesshomaru and Mizuki would be all alone.
"Third room on the right," Sesshomaru answered.
Mizuki beamed a smile. "Great. Now I hope you have a room ready for me."
"A room?"
"You do not expect your mother to stay in a hotel while you have this house available."
No, no he did not want her in his home. He did not want her near Kagome. If she was here, Kagome would not be, he knew it.
"I need to keep a close watch on my grandson if you need my help."
His glance shifted from his mother to Kagome. She seemed just as displeased with the situation as he was. "It's your home," she told him.
It was but - but it was her he wanted by his side, not his mother. However, if he refused her, she might leave and even if he tried to stop her, she would do as she wanted and there would be nothing he could do about it.
"Downstairs."
"Pardon me?"
"There are rooms downstairs."
"I knew you wanted me here," Mizuki said as she exited the room, ready to finally see her grandson.
As soon as she was in the hall, Kagome let a groan of exasperation slip her. How could she survive with this woman around her?
"You may leave if you wish to - I will not force you to endure my mother's presence."
Kagome raised her eyebrows. "You think I'm gonna leave this woman alone with my son? Not gonna happen."
"I will be here."
"She is your mother. You won't hurt her."
"You should not hurt her either," he reminded her.
"Maybe. But I can purify her if she gets too close to my son."
He had to admit, it would almost be entertaining to see her try but it would never happen. His mother was full of dirty tricks and she was not afraid to use any of them. He never understood the woman. She tried to get rid of Kagome every chance she got but at the same time she saved Rin's life. There was no logic to her actions. She simply did as she pleased whenever it suited her.
"Once she helps, she will leave. I will not allow her to stay."
"Don't worry, as soon as she gets rid of the jewel, I will kick her out myself."
"I will help you," he said with a smile. "I suppose this will be a nice trial run for us."
She would need to stop by her house and bring a bunch more stuff over at Sesshomaru's. She did not know how long it would take for Mizuki to get rid of the jewel but Kagome was going to spend every second watching Mizuki; she was not letting that woman out of her sight. Who knew what she would plan if she was left alone?
"I will take a break from work."
"I can handle your mother just fine."
If these two were left alone, he had feeling he would no longer have a house upon his return. "I should stay. You might require my help. We do not know what my mother's plan will be."
"You don't want to leave me alone with her."
"I do not," he bluntly admitted.
"I guess it's better this way." She should try to tolerate her. Kiyoshi was very sensitive to his environment and she did not want to add him any stress. She would have anything that might active the jewel that rested within him.
"At least now I know what bad thing I was waiting to happen."
"My mother is not the worst affliction we have had."
"Are you sure about that?" she asked, her head cocked to the side.
"She is a close second."
"Yes, right after your beast. I'd say that's pretty bad."
"It will be over before we know it," he said trying to re-assure her and himself.
"I hope so," said Kagome as she headed back to the bed. She was even more tired than before and all she wanted to do was sleep and forget Mizuki's presence for a few hours at least.
She pulled the blankets away and laid beneath them. Sesshomaru quickly joined her but instead of sleeping close to each other, there was a bit of space between them. Their mood from earlier was definitively gone and it was not about to come back.
"Your mother is worst than a cold shower."
Granted they did some things while her own mother was nearby but her mother could not hear anything - unless they were being really loud. His mother was probably listening in, waiting to barge in or comment on whatever they were doing.
"I don't need her coming in here, telling me how I'm doing it all wrong."
If he had any left over desire, it was gone. Especially since with his hearing he could hear his mother moving around in his son's bedroom. This was not the kind of ambiance he wanted. She had only been there a few minutes and he was already irritated by her presence. Clearly this was going to be put his new personality to the test. And he was pretty sure he was not going to enjoy the end result.
"It will not be for long."
He wrapped his arms around Kagome's waist, bringing her closer, despite his mother's presence in the house. He would be more at ease if he could feel her against him. He would not sleep tonight because he did not trust his mother; he had to remain on his guard.
He closed his eyes, letting the illusion set in.
But he knew, he knew she was right there; he could feel her.
Now the only question left was, what was she planning?
And could he stop it?
