Blood Stained
Chapter 98: The Right Wish
He was in hell.
He used to be a terrible person and now he was paying for it. There were no other explanation for his current predicament.
He was sitting in his dining room, where he was supposed to have breakfast with his mate and son. Alone. Nobody else. Instead, he was sitting there with his mate beside him, his son across from him, the wolf on his right -with Kai- and his mother beside his son. Why did he have to be punished this way? He was getting a headache simply from the situation. And there was no escaping it.
There were way too many people in his house, too many people he did not want and it was starting to take a toll on him. He did not need Kouga or Kai's help yet and his mother appeared to be dragging her feet when it came to finding a solution for Kiyoshi's dilemma. She was supposed to be useful and most of all she was not supposed to be there for very long. None of this was working out the way he had anticipated.
"Are you required to have breakfast here?"
"Kagome invited us," Kouga pointed out as he took a bite of his toast.
Right. And his mother well - his lovely mother was living with them. Obviously she would not give them any moment of peace and she forced her presence on them any time she could.
"And you had to agree?"
"Free breakfast," he pointed out as he stared at Sesshomaru with a smirk on his face.
"Sesshomaru. Kouga agreed to come all the way over here - to help us. I think we can let him have breakfast here."
She knew the situation was not ideal - although Kouga's presence was his idea. Not that she was against it - she was more than thrilled to see her old friend. And she definitively needed to have a girl talk with Kai. If someone deserved happiness it was Kouga and Kai was also all alone. It was a match made in heaven and she was glad that their relationship was progressing in the right direction. Unfortunately, the house had been crowded during the last little while she prevented her from chatting with anyone really. She could not even have a proper conversation with Sesshomaru since his mother was listening in any time she got the chance.
So far, Kagome managed to avoid her every single time which was a good thing. If she was left alone in the same room as that woman she might lose her mind and they would end up fighting. She wanted to be the better person but she simply could not when Mizuki was around; she knew just how to push her buttons. And so, Kagome decided it would be best to never be in the same room as her and if she had to be, there had to be someone else around.
Usually that someone else was Sesshomaru.
Though his patience with his mother was running thin as well.
Also, she spent all of her time with Kiyoshi. He was always in her arms, she always feeding him, changing him. It was not as though she thought her son was in danger with her - she was crazy but she was not that crazy. Plus, Kiyoshi seemed to trust her. He never argued when she held him, he never cried. He even often smiled and giggled. He liked his grandmother. She supposed she should be happy about that but it was difficult. Also, she did not have the heart to tear her son away from her arms. He should be happy. Plus, it might be that Mizuki was helping with the jewel when she was spending time with him.
Though that did not prevent her from missing her son.
Sure, she had some time with him but it was not the same. Also, she could not forget about that warning she had during her coma. She was always extremely protective of her son but that only made it worst. She did not like it when he was out of her sight and she felt like time was running out. She woke up because he needed her. She could not fail him, not now.
"I believe my son prefers human company to his own kind."
Kagome felt her grip tighten on her glass of orange juice but she said nothing. She was getting used to these little cheap shots. Although, even Mizuki had to admit it was a bit foolish; she loved her grandson - who had human blood - but she kept on insulting humans. She had to see it made no sense.
"I prefer the company of people I like."
"You invited me here," Kouga reminded him.
"You are a necessary nuisance."
Neither of them forgot their goodbye or the understanding they came to back then. However, the relationship was not one that was meant to be nice, it was more a friendly rivalry and it suited them both.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
At least Sesshomaru was treating him better than he was treating his own better. Kouga could hardly blame him though; the woman was horrible. She sneered at him a few times even if she clearly preferred him over Kagome. He was not a fan of how she was treating Kagome but it was not really his place to say. Plus, he saw Sesshomaru's strength; he had to be getting it from someone. Plus if both Sesshomaru and Kagome were tolerating such a bad attitude, there had to be a reason for it and he would not interfere.
He was a bit worried for Kai. She had not been back to Japan since she left and he had meant to show her a good time; it was not exactly happening at the moment. Hopefully the woman would leave soon and they could enjoy the time they had here. He never really meant to come back here but now he could not find a reason not to live here. Ginta and Hakkaku would follow him. There were not many youkais left and frankly he considered Kagome family. He would much preferred to be near his family than all alone. And he kinda liked the little guy.
And home was home.
He never truly thought about starting a family but now he had Kai. It might be nice to actually have his cubs where he was born.
But that was an important decision and it was one he could not make alone. Plus it might be better for him to wait and see how things would end up between him and Kai.
"We should do something today," Kagome said to break the silence.
She was tired of hearing Mizuki's insults and it was not as though she would get to spend the day with her son. It might be nice to do something maybe a double date. Like normal people. They did not have any friends, they did not know other couples. It was not as though they had time to make friends and meet the neighbours. Plus, what would they talk about with normal people? Too many things happened to them. It was impossible for them to ever be normal. They could be a great couple with less issues but they could never be human normal.
"All four of us," she specified. "I mean, your mother seems thrilled to be babysitting all the time."
"He has to have a strong female presence in his life," Mizuki supplied.
Oh yes, it was time for her to get out of the house. She was done being Mizuki's amusement toy for a while - she needed to get away from this four walls and she had to get some fresh air away from that evil woman.
"Kagome, I do not -"
But Sesshomaru was not given the chance to finish his sentence since Kagome cut him off. "And I think it's a great idea. We should show Kouga and Kai how much things changed since they've been gone."
"Well, I kinda know -"
"Let's go."
And at that point, everyone decided it might be a good idea to simply go along with Kagome's suggestion and stop fighting it. In silence, they all got up from the chairs, leaving most of their breakfast untouched and they made their way to the door. Sesshomaru could not help but eye his mate.
"It's either this or I'm going to kill your mother."
"Let's hurry then." She could do that later. After they got rid of the jewel.
"My point exactly," she replied as she moved everyone along. She did not know where to take them or where they were going but being in this house made her dizzy. It was too much and it was suffocating.
Mizuki never tore her eyes away from her grandson, not even when she heard the front door shut. She did not try to stop them from leaving why should she? She much rather have her grandson all the herself. Plus it would be easier to work on this if Kagome was not present. She had a way of mingling when it was none of her concern. If Mizuki tried anything, Kagome might say she was trying to harm Kiyoshi. No, that human knew nothing and she preferred it when she was not around.
At least her grandson understood that she was only trying to help.
He was strong very strong. It was surprising that the jewel did not try to manifest itself yet. Her grandson's power were enough to keep it locked away for the most part. Although, she despised the idea of keeping such a dangerous artefact inside of him, she knew he would more than able to handle it. He certainly did not get that from his mother.
Kagome was quite an interesting creature. Mizuki was surprised she had not lost her mind yet. She did do her best to get on her nerves but no matter what, Kagome ignored her and kept herself control. She was worthy opponent, especially for a human. Then again, she was the Miko of the Shikon no Tama. It might make her stronger than most. She would have made a fine mate for a monk - not a youkai. A youkai and a miko. Was there a worst match possible? It was a miracle that her grandson came out of her alive. She could have harmed him, purified him. A miko should not mate a youkai. It was even worst than a human and a youkai.
Unfortunately, there was no reasoning with her son. He was dead set on staying with her despite the fact that she found a solution to his problem. He did not have to remain stuck with her. She thought he would see the errors of his ways but it was not happening.
First of all, she would get rid of the jewel and then she would deal with this mating.
She glanced down at her grandson while smiling at him.
"Do not worry, your grandmother will take care of you."
Someone had to do it.
-B-
"What is she saying about me?"
Sesshomaru blinked. "Nothing."
"I can hear her talk. Clearly she's talking about me or you wouldn't be making that face."
"What face?"
"That face."
In frustration, Kagome crossed her arms in front of her chest. Kouga, Kai, Sesshomaru and her ended up going to the restaurant and went to the movies. After they ate, she realized that not much conversation would be happening; Kouga and Sesshomaru did not talk much and she could not even have a conversation with Kai because she was a bit shy and did not talk much. The movies then became their best option and that was what they did. Once their little outing was over, Kai and Kouga returned to the hotel and Kagome and Sesshomaru were forced to go back home.
It was supposed to be a nice place for the two of them. A home, a place where she wanted to live.
His mother made it impossible.
And now, she had to hear her trash talk about her with her son. Granted she was not exactly sure what Mizuki was saying but she could guess. Sesshomaru did not look happy either but he was not saying anything.
"Perhaps it would be better if she left."
"No. We need her help. But if I have to tolerate her in our home, I'm gonna bitch about it a little."
Sesshomaru could not help the smile that formed on his lips. "Our home?"
It slipped her without her noticing. It was not a bad thing though. Despite the horrible situation she was apparently becoming very comfortable in this house. It was hard not to - her son was at home with his own bedroom, her mom, grandpa and brother were not there. It was more intimate. It made her feel like they were a real normal family and it was a nice feeling.
"Should I interpret that as a sign that you are comfortable here?"
"I am." She sighed. "I'm not irritated by you Sesshomaru. It's just - everything is changing and it can be stressful and your mother is not helping. And I'm really worried about Kiyoshi."
Sesshomaru put his hand on her arm, trying to re-assure her. "Nothing will happen to our son. I will not allow it."
"We tried to prevent a lot of things and we've been pretty bad at it," she said with a sad smile.
"Not this time."
She tilted her head back and closed her eyes, trying to relax. "I guess."
"I am certain that my mother does not want to drag this on." She might enjoy spending time with her grandson but she disliked Kagome. He might need to have a conversation with his mother once Kagome went to bed. He did not want to do it with her awake. She did not need something else to worry about - she had enough on her plate.
"This is what she wants. Me upset. I am giving it to her."
She was certain that she was listening in right now with a stupid smirk on her face. Perhaps it was best if she just went to sleep and tried to forget about it, at least for now. She leaned into Sesshomaru's body and kept her eyes closed. His presence and warmth could calm her. It was another new perk of their ever growing mating bond. He had a much easier time than her when it came to relaxing. Perhaps youkai had a better patience - they had a few centuries to work on it. Every time she was near him for long enough, his emotions and peace of mind could affect her.
It did not seem to be working the other way around though, or he would spend all of his time stressed out.
He made sure to caress her arms to help her fall asleep. He waited, never moving a muscle. He waited until she was asleep, her breathing steady and then he got up. He slowly detached her from his body, careful not to wake her, and laid her head on her pillow. He covered her with the blanket and then quietly exited the room. It was time to have a conversation with his mother. From the shift in her aura, she could already tell he was coming. Hopefully, she did not plan on yelling; he could not wake up Kagome.
"You have to cease all of this childish behaviour," he said as he leaned against the doorframe.
"What are you referring to?" she inquired, innocently.
"You will stop insulting her. She has enough to worry about and she does need your insults."
"I only speak the truth. It is not childish of me."
"Then you do not know who is she or you would not speak to her that way."
"She is human, she is the Miko of the Shikon no Tama." She paused. "Did I miss anything else?"
"She is more than that. People are not their kind, their face, mother, they are more than that."
"What could she possibly offer you? What makes her worthy of you?"
"Everything. I am the one who is unworthy of her."
Her eyes narrowed. "You are not unworthy. Do not speak that way. The blood you carry, traveling through your veins, is much precious than hers. Do not say this to me. You deserve someone as powerful as you."
"She is more powerful than me. She survived more than I would have been able to handle."
He would never stop fighting for her, he would never stop defending her. His mother was very lucky that he required her help; he wanted to rip her throat out. He was keeping it polite and civilized simply because his son was present and he did not want to wake up Kagome.
"I am not sure about that. I managed to shake her certainty for a while."
"It was only because she wished for me to have the best I could have." Even though that was her. And after everything they went through it was normal for her to have her moments of doubts and confusion. He hardly thought that counted.
"As do I. Why do you think I am doing this?"
"Because you like to have your way. Because this is not what you wanted."
"Of course this is not what I wanted." She sighed. "Why would I want you to have a human as a mate?"
"I was naive to think that my happiness was important to you." She never cared much about him. Status and power was all that mattered to her. She thought it was terrible and tainting their blood that he mated a human. Did she not see everything he gained from this mating? The happy life he had? She was never able to provide him with a happy childhood and now he gathered his own happiness. Could she not be happy for him?
"You believe this is happiness because you have not had anything better. If you let me show you, you would agree with me."
"Nothing you ever showed me brought me happiness."
"You hardly complained when I brought that little girl back. You seemed happy. Or at least that was what your valet said."
He was happy and grateful when she showed such kindness. He did not believe she was able to do something like this. Obviously, he always had his doubts behind her motives. His mother was not a kind person. He thought she might want something in return but during all those years, she never asked for anything. Unless she only did it so she could throw it back in his face whenever she pleased.
"It was a surprising gesture but I highly doubt you did that for me."
"Well, I certainly did not want her alive."
"You did it for my sake?"
"Of course, I am your mother after all."
He eyed her suspiciously. "You had no ulterior motives?"
"She was not a potential mate. I had no reason to go against your happiness and keep her dead. I could bring her back to life and I did. I am not evil, Sesshomaru."
"Kagome is already my mate and there is nothing you can do about it - despite what you think. It is too late. If you are not evil then you should not attempt to ruin this mating."
"Fine."
He blinked, her reply taking him by surprise. When did his mother ever admit that he was right? "You will stop getting between us?"
"No. Well - I might. If she proves she is worthy enough to be with you."
It was not what he was hoping for but it was better than before. "What will be proof enough for you, mother?"
"That is something she will have to figure out on her own. I cannot give her all of the answers."
He resisted the urge to sneer. She was not giving any answers, she was simply being a difficult brat. His hands were clenched into fists as he took a step forward. How could one person be so infuriating? Why did she know how to push his buttons so well?
"You simply want her to fail."
"If she is so strong and amazing, then her worth should show all by itself. She should not need my indications."
"I don't need them."
Sesshomaru was nearly startled out of skin when he heard Kagome's voice. How did he not notice her coming? His senses were sharp! Was he so used to her presence that she could approach him undetected? He did not mean for her to hear this conversation or hear everything his mother had to say. She was already furious enough with the woman - she did not need any more reasons to hate her.
"Oh?" Mizuki inquired, clearly amused by Kagome's presence.
Unlike her son, she heard her coming towards the bedroom. Obviously she chose to remain silent about it. If her son's senses were dull enough not to detect her, who was she to ruin the surprise? Although she had to admit it was strange that his guard was not up against the girl's presence. They had not been mated for a long time. They should not be so used to each other's presence. Her senses always flared up when Inutaisho approached. Then again, he was a human lover cheating bastard.
"I don't need your indications and I don't need to prove myself to you," Kagome explained as she walked into the room. "You are nobody. You are not important to me. And I don't know what made you think you could decide if I was worthy of your son or not, but it's none of your business. I don't need your approval. I know I'm good enough for Sesshomaru and I know I can make him happy."
She almost made him feel foolish for deciding her; she could defend herself all on her own.
"If you don't like me, that's your problem. Not mine."
"I could break your mating."
"You need me and Sesshomaru to agree to it. Or at least one of us." She was not exactly sure how it worked since she did not even know there was a way to do it - but she would pretend that she knew all about it. She refused to lose her confidence in front of her. Sesshomaru thought he had to protect her and she did not want him to think that way. She could handle his mother. She tried to ignore her, she tried to be nice because she thought they needed her but if the woman was going to keep on bashing her, she would prove to her she was better than her.
The girl called her bluff - she would give her that much. Although, she was fairly certain that she could get one of them to break. Her son's anger seemed to manifest a lot easier than before. Perhaps this new Sesshomaru had more rage inside of him. It could be a good thing.
"Maybe one of you will get sick of each other?"
"I highly doubt it. I accept him, all of him. I live with him." Perhaps it was not yet a permanent arrangement but his mother did not need to know about that.
"Do you? A lot of your stuff seems to be missing from here."
"I have not finished moving in yet. Your presence kind makes it difficult."
"Oh please, do not stop your life on my account."
"Oh I'm not. I am still mated to your son."
She smirked. "That is because you've fooled yourself into thinking you were worth it."
"And what makes you think I'm not? Because I'm human? I'm stronger than you are."
"You want to test it out?"
"Yes."
She was not afraid of her. She survived Naraku and he was the worst she could deal with - physically. She even managed to pull through Sesshomaru's beast and all the nightmares it put her through. His mother could not be worst than all of that put together. Nothing could bring her down ever again and she would not let Mizuki terrorize her. If she wanted to fight, then so be it, they would fight. It was not the way she wanted to solve the problem but if it was the only way to do it, then they would fight.
"You would take me? You are that foolish."
Sesshomaru had the urge to intervene but at the same time, he was not sure he wanted to get in the middle of those two. His mother's eyes were glowing red and Kagome's aura was flaring up. If he tried to interrupt them, he would probably get burned alive. Although, his son was still in his mother's arms and he was not too keen on leaving him there. He did not think that either of them would hurt him but he could get hurt in the process by complete accident.
He took one step forward and removed Kiyoshi from his mother's arms.
"I would never hurt my grandson," Mizuki said with anger flashing through her eyes.
"No, but I do believe my mate should have the chance to prove her strength and I do not want my son present for that."
"You believe she would fight me?"
"Yes. And she would win."
Kagome could protect herself, she could fight. And she was a new person than before, a stronger one. He highly doubted she would easily lose. He was not sure about the ending of the fight since his mother was stubborn and a sore loser but he knew for a fact that Kagome would not go down easily. Obviously, he would not share his uncertainty with his mother.
"I will not fight her."
"Why not? I thought this was what you wanted," Kagome argued.
"No, I said you should prove yourself worthy."
"Worthy how?"
"Worthy of my son," she finally said. "If you fight me, it will not prove it. And you will lose. I do believe that will only make the situation worst for you."
"I would beat you."
"Prove you are worthy."
Those were Mizuki last words before she walked out on all of them, as if the conversation was over. Kagome's eyes widened and her eyes narrowed; the nerve of that woman! Who did she think she was? She initiated this, she insulted her and then she simply left? This was unbelievable!
"Why does she keep doing this?"
"Because that is simply the way my mother is."
"I don't have to prove anything to her."
Sesshomaru walked up behind her and snaked his arms around her waist. "I know."
It bothered her - she did not want her to be right, she did not want her to think she was important. And yet she could not help it; she wanted Mizuki to see why her and Sesshomaru were right for each other.
She had to find a way to prove it.
-B-
Two people did not sleep that night.
As per usual, Sesshomaru found himself tossing around - although this time it was for a different reason. It was because Kagome could not sleep. She was the one who began to toss around, clearly upset. He did not ask her what was wrong but he ended up staying awake like her.
He tried to comfort her a few times, tried to wrap his arms around her, but she felt so tense that he let go.
Kagome's eyes were forced shut as she tried to clear her mind. Despite her closed eyes, she could already feel the light of the sun filling in the room. It was way too late for her to be trying to sleep. Yet, despite how desperate her situation was, she kept trying. Her mind was numb and her thoughts were clouded inside her head. How was she supposed to think clearly and deal with his mother if she was running on no sleep?
It was Mizuki's fault that she stayed awake the whole night.
She kept trying to find a way to prove she was worthy of Sesshomaru - and it was completely insane because they were good together. How could she find a solution to something that was not a problem?
"You should not let her get to you," he finally said.
"How am I supposed to do otherwise? She keeps trying to get in our way!"
"She will not."
"I know - I just - why can't she see what we see?"
"Because she's a rotten woman."
Kagome smiled. "I like that answer." She turned around to lay on her back and stared at Sesshomaru. "I'm sorry."
"Do not apologize, she angers me as well."
"Yeah, well I can't wait for her to be gone." She sighed. "Is she awake?"
"She is downstairs."
"With Kiyoshi?"
"No, he is upstairs."
"Good."
Kagome pushed the blankets away from her body and swung her legs from the edge of the bed. "I'm gonna see my son a little bit before she steals him away. Again."
He let her go, though the urge to keep her in bed with him was strong. He missed her, he had not been with her, felt her in a very long time. Also, the way his mother was lingering around, he had a feeling it would take a while before he could do it again. It was not helping with his on going rage - it only made it worst.
Kagome was smiling dazzlingly when she entered her son's room. He was waiting for her, lying in his crib, waving his arms in front of his body. How she missed the mornings with him. It was nearly the first time since Mizuki's arrival that she got to see him when he woke up. She hurried to the crib and took him into her arms.
"Good morning you."
He smiled at her.
"I missed ya. Sorry mommy hasn't been around you that much." She had not realized how much it hurt to be so far from him when he was so close to her. "Your grandma takes up a lot of room."
"Or perhaps you have not made enough efforts to see your son?"
Kagome's blood iced in her veins when she heard Mizuki's voice. Why did she insist into turning her life into a living hell? Could she not even let her have a moment with her son? Could she not understand how important that bond was? Of course not. She had no bond with Sesshomaru. He hated her.
"I tried. But you insisted you needed time with him to save his life. His life is more important than anything else."
"If you say so," said Mizuki as she approached her grandson. She gently caressed his cheeks, ignoring the fact that she was right in Kagome's bubble.
"I say so. I love my son. More than you love yours. I care about what makes him happy."
"Oh have you spoken with him?"
"I don't need to. And I don't ignore what he wants like you do with Sesshomaru."
"My son doesn't know what he wants."
"He does know what he wants. You're simply the one who ignores everything he tells you. He wants to be with me."
"And you believe yourself to be enough for him?"
"Yes," Kagome replied with no hesitation.
"Would you bet your life on it?"
Kagome observed Mizuki's face, searching for an emotion. Was she serious? Was it a question or was she threatening her? The woman hated her but she was not certain that she would kill her. Maybe fight her but… to the death? No. Even she could not be that evil.
"Yes."
Sesshomaru was worth her life. He was ready to give up his for hers. He was willing to do anything for her. She was willing to do the same in exchange.
"Are you certain?"
"What are you going to do? Kill me?"
"I am simply confirming that you truly are willing to bet your life on your worth."
"I am."
"And you are willing to live with the consequences of that choice?"
"It is not a consequence. I am willing to bet my life on it. And I would not die, because we were meant to be together."
"You were not always so sure."
"I am now. I didn't have enough information before. Now I know."
"If you're so sure, then so be it."
Mizuki ignored Kagome's confused look and took Kiyoshi from Kagome's arms. At first Kagome resisted but when Mizuki proved to be persistent, she let her do it. Mizuki was not going to hurt Kiyoshi - she had to keep repeating that to herself. Mizuki smiled brightly and tucked her grandson into her arms.
"You wanted to jewel gone, correct?"
Kagome nodded. Of course she wanted that! It was all she had been wanting. It was the only reason Mizuki was present in their house and destroying her life. Why else would she tolerate her here?
"And you wish to prove you are right?"
"Yes. And yes."
"Then so be it. You will have the chance to prove both."
Mizuki pressed her hand against her grandson's chest. She closed her eyes and began mumbling under her breathe. Kagome tried to listen to the words but she could not make out any of them. Mizuki kept going for a few minutes until finally a white glow emerged from her hand and transferred to Kiyoshi's chest. Kagome held her breath, never able to glance away. Finally the glow turned pink and a sphere of light came out of her son's chest and went into Mizuki's hand.
A smirk appeared on Mizuki's face. "Good luck," she said before smacking her hand against Kagome's chest.
Kagome felt choked, unable to breathe. It was though someone knocked her over but she was standing still. Her whole body began to shake and she could not control it. Her eyes rolled back in her head and her lips parted. Her mind went blank and then, she was on the ground.
"W-whwat did you do?" she barely managed to ask.
Mizuki seemed completely unfazed as she bent down to lower herself to Kagome's level.
"I made a wish."
