A/N: Hey it's still sunday for another 3 minutes! ALRIGHT! Haha. Sorry busy day again! Only one more chapter to go!
Blood Stained
Chapter 99: Eternal Jewel
This was not happening, this was not her life.
"A wish? What wish?" Kagome managed to ask when the shock wore off.
"Is that not what you want?"
"I wanted to get rid of this damn thing. I didn't want it to go back into Kiyoshi. And I certainly didn't want you to make a wish." Mizuki was evil and twisted. She was not supposed to use the jewel! She was supposed to help her grandson! Who knew how badly this would evolve? The more selfish wishes they made the worst it was. Even she should know that. She trusted that witch - she thought she could not harm Kiyoshi!
"It will not go back into my grandson. Who do you take me for?" she inquired, clearly insulted.
"Then why did you make a wish?"
"I made a wish that will prove who is right."
The girl would never agree with her and this way there was no way to argue with the results. It was the perfect solution. She did not care about Kagome but she cared about her grandson. The jewel was out of the way and she would be proven right. That was a foolproof plan. Though Kagome did not seem quite pleased with it. Oh well. She should have no problem with it; she thought she was right."
"Right about what?"
"Right about you. Right about your relationship with Sesshomaru."
Kagome lifted a hand and put it against her chest; she felt a throbbing in her chest, a foreign presence. Before, she would not have recognized it but now she knew exactly what it was; it was the jewel. She was now the one carrying it. Was that it? Was that the terrible wish Mizuki made? Kagome did not mind being the one who carried it. Better her than her son.
"You put it back in me," she stated.
"Isn't that what you said? Destroyed or back inside your body where it apparently belongs."
She was a little strong; so far she was handling the power of the jewel. Although, it was dormant at the moment and it would remain that way until - until everyone understood that Mizuki was right. Though, she was surprised that Kagome was still standing; perhaps she had slightly mistaken their situation. They might be a bit stronger than she anticipated. At least it gave Kagome a bit more of time.
"That was your wish? To put it back in my body?" That hardly made any sense. Also, wishes always back fired. That was how the jewel found its way into Kiyoshi in the first place. This was not going to end well. It was going to leave her body or even worst; someone would come after her and her family. A solution could not be that simple. The only way the jewel was safe was if it was destroyed. As long as it was present, it could hurt someone.
"Of course not, why would I make such a silly wish?"
Kagome blinked. "Then what did you wish for?"
"I told you, child. We will finally know who is right."
"Right about what?"
"If you are worthy of my son, if you truly make him happy."
"What was your wish?" This time it was not just a question, she was demanding an answer.
"If you live, you'll know you were right."
Her eyes widened and a sudden fear began to paralyze her. If she lived? What did she do, what did she do! "You wished for my death?"
"Do not be foolish. If I wished for your death you would already be dead." It would have been a nice way to get rid of her but she did not think her son would let that one slide. Plus, it would hurt him a lot since they were still mated. She refused to put him through that kind of pain. Especially since she could easily free him from her.
"Then what are you talking about?"
"You'll stay with Sesshomaru if you're meant to be."
"And I'll die if I don't?"
"I am not sure how humans handle the breaking of a mating bond. You might die."
"You destroyed our mating bond?"
"I have done nothing. If it ends up dissipated, it will be your own fault, not mine."
"Can you give me a clear answer for once!" Kagome was sick and tired of her mind games and she did not want to deal with all of this foolishness. Her heart hurt and her entire body ached. She had no desire to be Mizuki's toy. Why did she always have to pull the strings? Why did she always have to get her way? It was not fair. Sesshomaru and her deserved a break, they deserved to be happy. Why did something always run it for them?
"I made a wish. If your love - if you relationship does not make my son happy, if it is not enough, if you are not enough, then your mating bond will be broken."
At first she felt like her lungs were set on fire, all the air disappearing. She could not inhale, she could not exhale. Her eyes were burning with tears and her heart was skipping a beat with all the fears and terror that ran through her mind. She would dare to mess with them, their bond, the very thing that pulled them through a lot of horrors? No. The jewel was evil, it would spin this wish around and it would bring them pain and heartbreak. It would never work right even if she did love Sesshomaru with all of her heart.
Although… "But the mating mark…it's still there." She pinched her lips. "It means I was right."
Mizuki shrugged her shoulders. "For now. I do not doubt that you make each other happy for the moment. You do not know any better. But in the long run? You two will never work and the mating will be broken. Everything will be as it should. Although you might die. But do not fear, I will be there to look after my grandson. He will not need you."
Kagome frowned. "Die? I'm sorry but you're not gonna get rid of me that easily. I can't be killed that easily. Trust me, lot of people have tried." How could this woman be so cruel? She would take her grandson's mother away from him? How could she disrespect her like this?
"Mother. What have you done?"
Sesshomaru tried to stay away from the conversation but he had officially heard too much. A wish on the jewel could not be undone. It would follow its course until it was completed. He did not have the same doubts as his mother. He did not think that Kagome and him were doomed - he knew they were meant to last forever. That did not mean he enjoyed the idea of his mate carrying the jewel in her heart. It was as dangerous inside his mate than inside his son. He wanted it destroyed, not inside Kagome! This was all wrong. And death. What if it backfired and she died? He could not lose her, not after everything. They went through too much - he could not have her die on him.
"I did what I had to do. You would not listen to me. Now you will have no choice."
"Kagome, take Kiyoshi," Sesshomaru ordered as he kept his eyes locked on his mother.
Kagome did not even hesitate or question his motives. She dove in and retrieved her son from his evil mother's arms. Mizuki made no motion to stop her, instead she was intrigued by her son's reaction. For the first time, she did not know what reaction to expect from him. He was new and different. This would prove to be rather interesting. Plus, he was still nothing more than a puppy - she could handle him.
As soon as his son was out of harm's way, Sesshomaru rushed in. Before anyone could blink, Sesshomaru wrapped his fingers around his mother's throat and smashed her against the nearest wall. The force of the hit was so great that half of the wall gave in beneath his mother's frame. The tip of his claws were breaking her skin and the sound of blood was already filling the room. To his frustration though, his mother did not seem to have a reaction. Instead she was staring right back into his eyes, almost challenging him. Did she not know he wanted nothing more than to kill her? She was no longer useful to him. She made a wish, they would not be able to get rid of the jewel. Her purpose was gone. He could kill her. He already was very unhappy with her because of everything she did to Kagome but this - this was too much.
He could not tolerate this. He could not let her get away with it. She had this impression that she could do whatever she want without getting any consequences. It had to stop today.
"What will you do Sesshomaru? Kill your own mother?"
"Perhaps. You would deserve it."
"Why? I thought she made you happy."
"She does."
"Then why do you believe she will die? Or that your bond will be broken?"
"The jewel does not give gifts. It is not good. It will bring evil and bad wherever it goes. Even if I love her, even if she makes me the happiest man alive, it will find a way to hurt us."
"You simply do not understand how the jewel works."
"I know very well how it works."
He saw its evilness when it proposed him the deal. It was like he was staring into an abyss. He could never forget its evil power pulsing through. No, no good could ever come out of it.
"Then we shall see."
"I am not letting you get away with it."
"Then kill me."
His grip on her throat tightened. He wanted to do it very badly, he did not even know why he had not done it. What was stopping him? He hated his mother and she never brought him anything good in his life. She abandoned him, she treated him badly. She did not care about what made him happy. She only thought of herself. She was willing to kill Kagome simply to get her way. What kind of evil person did such a thing?
"Go ahead, son. Do it or let me go."
She knew he would not do it. He might be different but he was not a killer. He used to be, but not anymore. She changed him, she made him a bit weaker. Of course, he relied more on his instincts, even she could see it. Still, those instincts would never drive him to be a killer.
His hand began to shake, he wanted to do it. Why could he not end her terrible life? Why could he not free himself from her hold? He had to avenge Kagome and what she did to her.
Mizuki smirked. "That is what I thought." She wrapped her fingers around his wrist and pulled his hand away. He let it drop to the side and made no attempt to lift it back up again. She then detached herself from the wall and walked towards Kagome. She kissed her grandson on the head and smiled at Kagome. "I hope you were right."
It was too late now. She won. Nobody could take her wish away and nobody could change what would happen. Maybe the girl would be lucky, maybe the breaking of the bond would not kill her. She was a miko and she could heal; perhaps that would be her saving grace. Of course, it hardly mattered what would happen to her. As long as Sesshomaru was free from her, it was always she concerned herself with - she could die or she could live.
Kagome's bottom lip began to shake she wanted to punch her, she wanted to hurt her. Instead, she held her son tightly in her arms and never broke eye contact. She lost. She lost against Sesshomaru's mother. It was too late to change what happened, it was done. If for some reason Sesshomaru and her were not meant to be, then she would die. And if she did not die, well she would live but they would no longer be mated. Was that something that could be fixed? In the eventuality that she did survive it, would they be able to mate again? No. The jewel would do something terrible - if it had not done it already.
Mizuki let her gaze linger a little longer before walking out of the room. She was no longer needed her; she did what they asked her to do. Obviously, she did not do it the way they expected. It was their own fault; they were not specific enough. And they should not have challenged her. She was right and time would prove her right. She was sad she would not see her grandson for a while but she knew she could come around any time she wanted - even without their blessing. She was not afraid of her son. Although his aura was flaring a lot - it was safer to leave the area for the time being. His newly composed body could be unpredictable.
As Mizuki left, Sesshomaru approached Kagome and wrapped his arm around her waist, bringing her and their son closer.
Everything from now on was left to the unknown.
-B-
Days went by, but Kagome did not leave her room.
Sesshomaru tried but she barely spoke to him. She got up to take care of her son but as soon as all of Kiyoshi's needs were taken care of, she went back to the bed. She hid in there without getting dressed, without showering and she barely had a meal a day. Once Sesshomaru got desperate enough, he called in Kouga and Kai. They both made a large amount of efforts but she even ignored them. Their presents proved to be a mistake. Now that the wolf was worried about Kagome he refused to leave.
So, instead of sharing a house with his wife and son and living a happy life he was stuck with two wolves.
This was not how he imagined all of it would go down. And there was only one person to blame for it all; his mother.
Obviously she had not shown herself ever since she made her great wish.
He understood why Kagome was sad and depressed. He was a little scared as well. After all, they never knew how the jewel would react to wishes. However, she was still alive. And he did not think their love would fail. They loved each other and she made him happy. Even if they fought, even if they gave each other the cold shoulder, he would never be unhappy. Before he met her, before she came into his life and showed him what it truly was to live, he did not know happiness. He only knew how to miserable. How could he ever let go of her after the world of wonders she gave him? His mother was insane. She was an insane, bitter woman.
He meant to have this speech with Kagome but she did not want to hear it and he refused to have a conversation by himself. He would speak with her when she was ready to listen. Though it had better be soon. He refused to let her waste her life away because of his mother. She was not worth it.
"Still nothing?"
"She is sleeping."
Kouga sighed heavily before running his fingers through his long black locks. He did his best to help his friend. Actually the first thing he wanted to do was killed Sesshomaru's mother but apparently it was not an option. The bitch was hard to track down. He could not believe someone would do something so terrible to Kagome. She was the kindest woman he ever met in his life. And she did not deserve it. She fought to hard to get her life back only to have someone take it away from her.
Kai even tried to find a way to get rid of the jewel but she found no answer. It was too late. The wish was made and it would remain that way. The only good thing was - if the jewel did not put a twist on the wish, it would stay dormant for a very long time. Kai and Kouga strongly believed that nothing could bring Kagome and Sesshomaru apart. They were meant for each other. Even when Sesshomaru tried to change the past, to prevent them from being together, he could not. He was unable to jump through that well.
They could not be apart.
"She won't die."
"Hn."
"Even if this thing works, she'll survive it and then you can mate her again."
"No."
"You wouldn't mate her again?"
"I could not."
Kouga arched an eyebrow. "What? Since when?"
Sesshomaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "How do you not know about this?" Kouga should be more familiar than him with mating. Sesshomaru was a loner who spent most of his life roaming the world on his own. Kouga was the pack leader who spent screaming about a mate.
"Not know about what?"
"You can not re-mate the same female."
"Why not?"
"If you break the bond, it cannot be reformed. It is a permanent arrangement."
Kouga gulped, suddenly feeling very bad. He supposed it made sense but it was cruel. Kagome would surely stay with him even if they were not mated. After all, that was a youkai thing right? And she was just human. All they did was get married - it was not the same thing. Marriage would be enough for her, would it not? Sesshomaru would feel the loss though. It would be very different for him to be with her without all the perks of the bond. It would never be the same again. Since the very beginning the two of them were bonded…
"Marriage. It'll be the same."
"Do not take me for a fool."
"She'd stay with you anyway."
"I know."
He knew but it would not be the same. He would stay with her regardless but he would spend his life longing for their bond. It would not be fair that his mother would be able to take away something so precious. Why did she even have that power? Why did they put her in a position to be so powerful? That was a terrible mistake; he never should have trusted his mother, he should not have allowed her into their home. And he could never take that decision back. He could never make it right again.
"Listen, we don't even know if that's gonna happen."
"I cannot make sure she will be safe."
"No but you can make sure that she lives her life. She spent too much time living in fear. She can't go on like this. It'll kill her. Eventually, she'll stop being Kagome. There is only so much one person can take."
"I have tried to speak with her but she refuses to listen."
"Then make her listen."
He did not want to be forceful with her. If she did not want to talk about it, if she needed to be sad, he wanted to let her do as she pleased. Obviously he did not want it to go on forever but he could not - he could not impose himself on her and he could not dictate her life. It was something he horribly did in the past and it was not something he intended on repeating.
"You're not forcing her. You're trying to help her."
Sesshomaru shook his head.
"Seriously, you're gonna let her hurt herself like this? Do you think this is good for her? If you think your mother won before, now she really won. She destroyed her life, she destroyed her happiness. She got everything she came for."
Sesshomaru did not want to say the wolf was right but unfortunately he could not say he was wrong. His mother walked out with the big prize. Maybe this huge unhappiness would activate the jewel and it might make it all much worst than it already was. Perhaps he needed to follow the wolf's advice. Although, he would not tell him. He did not need the satisfaction of knowing he was right.
Instead of speaking, Sesshomaru simply got up and ahead for his bedroom. Of course, he did not need to tell Kouga what he was doing; the wolf already knew. He went up the stairs two by two until he reached Kagome. She was exactly as he left her; laying in the bed, covered by the blanket. All he could see was the tip of her head sticking out. He walked to the bed and once he reached the edge, he sat down. He laid his hand on her hip and squeezed.
"Kagome. You cannot keep doing this."
No answer.
"My mother will not win. She cannot take away our happiness. You are letting her have her way, you are letting her win."
"I'm not letting her have anything!" Kagome's entire body was numb. How did he not understand. "It's inside me. Not inside of you. It's inside of me. And if I fail you, I lose you, I lose everything." One wrong move, one wrong moment and it was all over. It was a lot of pressure - too much pressure. "I am trying to deal with all of this. I don't know how to process this information. I have to live every single day knowing that if I don't make you happy, I lose you. I lose my family."
"Your family?"
"Your my family."
He reached for her hand which was hiding under the blanket. "And I will always be your family, Kagome. It does not matter if we are mated or not. It does not make us what we are."
"But - "
"No. You are human. You do different kind of bonds. If it was not for what happened, you would not know what it is."
It was a pain he could carry for her. She did so much for him that he was willing to carry the whole world around on his shoulders. He could hurt, he could take on all the pain simply to see her smile - because the moment she would smile he would be happy, he would forget about their missing bond. Her presence was enough to satisfy him and to make him happy. So what if he could never be mated to her? As long as he had her in his life, everything would be fine.
"Are you sure? You will know. I will know. I feel connected to you."
"And you will still feel connected to me. Our connection will not change. We went through too much Kagome."
"So even if I destroy our mating -"
He interrupted her, he could not let her finish that sentence. "Kagome, you will not destroy anything. You could never make me unhappy."
"We'll fight."
"And I will still be happy." He reached out for her cheek. "Kagome, you need to stop wasting days hiding in her. You will not find a solution to this problem. We simply have to learn to live with it - and we will. We will be happy forever, no matter the outcome."
For the first time, she sat up in the bed, pushing the blanket away from her body. She did not mean to be sad or depressed but she did not know how to deal with all the feelings swirling inside of her. The jewel was this foreign entity in her body and she did not know how to forget its presence. It was like a constant reminder of the doom lurking upon their heads. Could she truly trust this? Will they be happy no matter what? He seemed to be convinced that it would not kill her - meaning - meaning their situation would barely change right?
"I guess you're right."
"I am right. I am always right."
"You know, this Sesshomaru is really cocky."
"Is that a bad thing?" he asked with a smile.
Kagome laughed. "No, it's a good thing. The old Sesshomaru would have let me mope in her."
"You do not have time to mope. You have a life to live." He approached her and brushed his lips to hers. "We are free. I do not care what mother did, I do not care that the jewel still exists. I refuse to let anything else stand in the way of our happiness. Apparently we will always have to deal with terrible things happened to us. If so, then we must learn to make the best out of these situations. We cannot let anything else run life for us."
She pressed a peck to his lips. "I know. I can just -" She took his hand and pressed it to her chest. "I can feel it in there."
"The jewel?"
She nodded. "It's always there, pulsing inside of me, it's darkness it's like swirling inside of me."
"Why did you not tell me this?"
"Because I thought it would go away."
"It will."
"It has been days and it's not going away."
"Because you're holding on to it."
She frowned. "What do you mean?"
"You're feeding it with your darkness. My mother corrupted you, she took away your light. The jewel feeds on darkness and your sadness is perfect for it. If you stopped focusing on it, if you let your natural light feel you, it will not have the upper edge on you. You must take control of it. Do not let anything else ever control you Kagome."
"You think I want this?"
"I know you do not, but you are letting it happen."
She curled her toes, frustration rising inside of her. Did he think she wished for her life to be out of her control again? It was the worst thing that could happen to her. She promised herself that she would never be in such a situation again. She was a changed woman. She was a new person who overcame all of her problems. She should not be punished this way again. Why was life so unfair to her? Why, why, did the worst always happen and why did she always expect it to?
He was right. Her mind was filled with dark thoughts. No wonder she could feel its presence growing inside of her. She was feeding it. How could she stop? Her life was about to be destroyed by it. How could she be thinking happy thoughts?
"What makes you happy?" he inquired when he saw confusion shining in her eyes.
"Love." Him. He frustrated her but he made her so happy. He gave her so much during their time together. Things, memories that not even his mother or the jewel could take away. It could break their mating but it could not take away everything they built together. Their mating was not who they were, it did not define them and all the struggles and hurdles they went through. They were who they were because of everything they survived as a couple. Their strength and love defined them and nothing else.
"Then hold on to that," he said before kissing her.
This time she did not argue back. Instead she closed her eyes and she let his lips move against hers. She needed to focus on what was good and pure in her life. She truly needed to let go of all the darkness. If she had to live with the jewel inside of her then she would not feed it. It would be stuck in her, dormant and unable to do any harm. That would be the way she would live a peaceful life. If it could not be activated, it could not hurt her. Plus, she had no intention of making Sesshomaru's unhappy meaning the wish would never be fulfilled.
Those were the thoughts she had to hold on to to remind her that her life was good.
"It's just a jewel," he whispered against her lips before moving to her neck.
He laid gentle kisses, sucking and nibbling on the flesh. He did not meant for this to be so sensual but his control slipped from him. He had not been able to touch her in so long and now she was there for the taking. And she was making no move to stop him. He put his body over her, pressing their chests together. As soon as he did so, Kagome raised her hands and tangled her fingers in his hair. She let his love carry her, she let his touch set fire to her body. These were the feelings she wanted to focus on, these were the thoughts she wanted in her mind.
No more darkness. She was done with that.
Obviously, life would never stop dealing them bad cards.
She could no longer let the darkness always win. She was strong, she survived worst than a stupid jewel stuck inside of her. And she managed to spend many years with it living inside of her. If she got rid of all of her darkness, she would be able to do it all over again. She had a loving mate, she had a beautiful son. What else could she want? What else could make her happier? Nothing. She had enough with what she had. And no darkness in the world could erase the precious people that shared her life.
Darkness could not always win.
Her love for Sesshomaru would always be present. They would love each other and they would pull each other through the worst hurdles.
"I love you," she said with a smile.
"I love you too."
No one could make him happier than this woman. A simple kiss from her and he was lost. She changed his life in so many ways that he could not even remember the man he used to be - and that was a good thing. He was still changing now and that was not bad either. Every day with her was a new experience and he got to discover a new side to himself. Until she came along, he was two parts of one whole. His beast and him apparently never agreed on anything, they never merged. Although, it was his beast's desire for her that truly broke them apart - but she brought his two halves back together and for the first time in forever he was whole.
He was whole and it was all because of her.
He could never thank her enough, he could never love her enough for everything she brought him, all the adventures, all the memories and all the love. He would be alone if it was not for her. He would not know happiness and he would not know what love was. He did not even think he could love someone enough, he did not think he could love someone enough to mate them.
But there she was and he was holding on to her with everything he had.
"I will."
"You will what?" he asked, confused.
"I'll move in."
They waited long enough to start their life together. Plus if the jewel had not gotten rid of their mating bond yet it meant they did make each other happy. They managed to survive another crisis. Why push it back? Life was fleeting. It could be taken away at any moment. Why should she not enjoy all of the moments she could have with him? Why delay what was going to happen anyway? Plus she already spent a lot of time with him in this house - more than anticipated. She was basically settled in.
Why not take the jump?
"Are you sure? I do not want you to do anything you do not want to do."
"I want this, I want us."
The wait was over.
"We deserve this. We don't need another set back. I think we need to be able to start our new life now. We waited long enough, Sesshomaru. What else is holding us back?"
"Nothing," he quickly replied. He wanted to move in with her a long time ago. If this was truly what she desired than he would not stop her. He wanted their life together to start now. He wanted to wake up with her every morning. He wanted to feel her in his arms and he wanted to kiss her awake when the sun rose and now he would finally be able to do it.
"Scared?"
"Happy," he replied.
"If your mother ever shows up again, I'll kill her."
"Do not fear. I will do it first."
She could not help but laugh. "We can do it together."
"Another couple activity."
She leaned forward and pressed his forehead to his. "Is this it?"
"Is this what?"
"Is it finally the moment our forever begins?"
He nodded. "It will never end."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
He kissed her lips again, trying to make her feel all the love he had for her. He never wanted her to be scared again. He would show her love every day if that was what she needed. Each day, they would fight the darkness inside of her. They would make sure the jewel never saw darkness again. She would live carefree and happy and she would be loved. It did not matter what it would take to make this happen, he would do it.
When he finally pulled away, she was breathless.
Her chest was heavy but it was not because of the jewel this time. It was because she was happy. It was true, pure happiness. There was nothing standing in their way. For them to be together forever they only had to live up to one promise; to make each other happy and to love each other. To be perfectly honest, his mother could have made a worst wish.
Because if there was one thing she was sure of it was that she would never stop loving him. And he would cherish her forever.
