Prologue
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Kagome
was in her tenth floor apartment, standing on her balcony, overlooking the
city. Her beautiful black hair flew slightly in the soft wind. She sighed,
knowing she should be in bed. It was late; she knew that, but didn’t feel like
sleeping. She never slept more than a few hours a night anyway these days. Her
job gave her nightmares more often than not. She was doing what she had only
dreamed possible when she was a child. She was a miko, and a powerful one at
that. She had begun training at only six years of age to become what she was
now. Kagome had great healing abilities, which she used to help others when she
could, but that was not her job at the moment. Her main job was to free trapped
spirits; in other words, she removes ghosts from this world.
There weren’t many other mikos or
monks left that did what Kagome could do. You had to be very powerful to send a
soul to the next world when it did not want to go. Most ghosts remain in this
world because they believe that they have unfinished business. Therefore, there
are only two ways to set a soul free. One is to purify it, which can send them
to a happy resting place. The other is to get the ghost to believe it is time
to move on. The second method almost never worked, which is why Kagome was in
such high demand lately.
From the time she was born, it was
known that she had great power. Many mikos came looking for Kagome, after
sensing her powers, but her mother would not give her up as they wanted. Her
mother wanted her to have as much of a normal life as she could get. Only at
the age of six, which was two years later than the mikos would have liked,
would her mother let them start training her.
Kagome’s mother said that she
would only allow the great and well known miko Kaede take her and teach her
daughter. Kaede was known to be one of the last miko’s alive with enough power
to do Kagome’s job. Though Kagome still lived with her mother on the weekends,
she was with Kaede the rest of the time. She learned faster than anyone thought
she could and was well known throughout Japan for her great power. Kagome and Kaede became very close
and have stayed in constant contact throughout the years.
Demons and humans no longer fight
as they did in ancient times, thanks to mikos such as Kagome. Kagome may have
been one of the few mikos that could set souls free, but she was far from the
only miko out there. One out of every hundred humans was a miko or a monk these
days. Humans and demons seemed to have come to have a mutual respect for each
other. The lower class mikos and monks mostly worked as doctors and used their
healing abilities to help others.
All mikos and monks could help
people heal faster, but those like Kaede and Kagome were able to do a bit more.
If Kagome tried hard enough, she could cure cancer within a person, although it
would take much energy. It was because of this that Kagome and Kaede never
seemed to get any peace. Kaede was an old woman and wasn’t able to do as much
as she used to, which made things worse for Kagome. Kagome loved humans and
demons alike and would help all that she could, but it was not an easy thing to
do.
Kagome loved setting spirits free;
it made her feel good to know they were finally in a better place. She spent
most of her time tracking down lost souls, as she called them, and trying to
help them. She even had a team of mikos, monks and even some demons that she
worked with. They had been working together for more then five years and were
more like a family than co-workers. Since Kagome was so well known, she got
many calls from people asking for her help, to free their loved ones who were
haunting their homes.
Sometimes they would have to
travel long distances for long periods of time in order to get the job done.
Once they found the spirit, it could take days to get it out in the open, so
Kagome or one of the others could talk to it. Once they tried and mostly failed
to get the spirit to leave on it’s own, it could take
days or even weeks, sometimes, before Kagome could get close enough to purify
it. She had never purified more than one soul at a time though there were many
times she had to set multiple souls free in one case. That would take a long
time, since she had to rest after each one.
Once a soul was found, you could
corner it into talking to you for a while. The problem was that even cornered
within a room, it could move away from Kagome’s touch, and in order to be
purified she had to touch it, concentrating hard. Touching it wasn’t too hard,
but trying to catch a ghost while also trying to concentrate, well, that’s a
little harder. In order to set a soul free, she would have to relive their
lives and see everything they saw, in a flash of a second. That was why Kagome
needed rest afterwards.
It was frequently painful to
relive so much all at once, and if you didn’t know what you were doing, it
could hurt a whole lot. Taking in too much at once could kill you, which is why
you could only do one soul at a time. To do more would be to risk your
life.
Once you had relived their pain and could see their reason
for staying in this world, you could give them peace. How and why this worked
was never really known. Kagome believed that you could not really help someone
until you truly knew his or her pain. Helping free souls had always given
Kagome a sort of inner peace she had never known before she began her work.
Most of the time, her trips were not very frequent; she might go on a job once
every few months at most. Not many bothered to ask for help with ghosts, unless
they were being violent in some way. Most spirits were harmless, and no one
minded them really. Those kinds of ghosts she left alone; it was the ones in
pain she wanted to help most.
When she was not working with ghosts, Kagome spent her time
healing people alongside Kaede. She was kept quite busy and she liked it that
way most of the time. Unfortunately for Kagome, the last few cases she had
recently worked with ghosts were difficult ones. Not only were they strong
spirits, but they also had very haunting pasts. It was weird to Kagome, because
most of the cases she received were from people who lived in the houses being
haunted. But these last five cases had been called in from an unknown person
and were in the middle of nowhere. They were all valid cases, but very
unusual. The calls had also been one
right after the other, unlike most cases she had. She was called to the five
different locations within the past seven months.
Kagome didn’t really think about why she had been sent there
too much, since she was too busy remembering these
poor souls’ pasts. It was also true that with every strong soul she set free,
the stronger Kagome became, so she was happy about that at least. But the pain
she felt within these spirits was almost unbearable. She was kept up at night
because of the haunting nightmares that would overtake her in her sleep. What
once was a peaceful release from the harsh world was now far scarier than any reality
she could think of.
Kagome sighed as she stood watching the lights from the
city. If only she could rid herself of the nightmares, things would be so much
easier. But she could not seem to let the images she had seen go. She couldn’t
imagine how they lived through the lives the tortured souls had lived at all.
One female soul she could remember had been haunting an old train station that
was no longer in use, just outside of Texas.
To remember her death was scary enough, but to remember her life was so much
worse.
………………………..
*The girl’s memory*
The girl had been raped many times growing up, which would
have been bad enough in and of itself; the fact that those who raped her were
her father and brother only made it worse. She had never had a night’s rest
while she lived with them. Her brother was ten years older than her and had
begun raping her when he was seventeen. Her father had been raping her since
she was six years old and seemed to take pleasure in watching his son do the
same. Her mother had died when she was born and her father seemed to think it
was her fault. Perhaps that’s why he treated her as he did, though she never
did care why he did it. She just wanted it to stop.
She was not a strong girl physically, but mentally she had
developed a great amount of strength. Once she was fifteen, she left them both
behind, never looking back. She took care of herself doing old jobs, studying
constantly, and was able to get her GED. Though her apartment was not much at
all, it was home to her; she planned to go to college and get a real job as
soon as she could. It seemed that things were working out for her, and that she
could finally be happy.
Not long after she turned eighteen, she had been accepted
into a college a few towns away. She was
very excited that she was able to get student loans to cover her schooling and
her dorm room. She packed up the few things she had worth value and left with
happy thoughts of the life ahead of her. Sadly though, she never made it to the
school.
Once she got to the train station, it was already getting
dark out, but she had to be at the dorms later that night. She should have left
earlier, but she had had to work late and since it was her last day, and she
needed the money, she hadn’t minded. As she stood there, a group of men
approached her. She had not thought much about the five men, as she sat on the
bench, while waiting for her train. Then she took a moment to notice that she
was the only one at this train station, other than these unknown men.
She was not scared, however, until
she heard one of the men speak. “What are you doing out so late little girl?”
She knew right away who it was. It was her father; he had found her after all
this time. She said nothing in return, but stood up, attempting to walk away.
“You know it’s not nice to leave in the middle of the night
without telling anyone. I was worried you know,” he said sarcastically to her
back as she continued to walk. He grabbed her when she did not turn around.
“You almost got away, didn’t you? It took me a long time to find you, and when
I got to your place, you were already gone. Good thing your former landlord was
there to tell me what train you were taking.” He smiled as he spoke.
She looked over to see her brother and three others she
didn’t know. She still said nothing. ‘If I can just get on the train, I know I
will be safe from him. I just know it,’ she thought. Though it was a foolish
hope, it was all she had left.
Her father nodded to the other three men and said, “Don’t
worry about them, they’re only here to have a little
fun.” His smile widened. They laughed at her tear soaked face. She still said
nothing as she watched the train platform with hope still that she could get
away.
After a short while they grabbed her, dragging her off the
platform, each raping her painfully. Her eyes, however, were fixed on the train
tracks, hope still within her. She just had to get on the train and somehow it
would all be all right. Her father was the first to take her, and her brother
the last. They all reeked of alcohol and she hated every one of them at that
moment and she always would.
Then she could hear it in the distance; the train was
coming. ‘Thank god,’ she thought happily. But her father lifted her, grabbed
her naked body, and threw her at the wall. “If you say a word, I will kill
you,” he said as he pulled out a rather large knife and held it to her throat.
The train stopped. She screamed anyway, not caring what he
said, but he had expected that and covered her mouth quickly with his other
hand. They were in the shadows, so they were unseen by the conductor. And no
one got off at that stop, not many people ever did because it was such a poor
area. The train started to leave and the tears were now flowing faster than
before down her face. She sobbed and as the train and
all her hope left, she screamed “NOOO!” Her father could not stop the scream
from being uttered, but it didn’t matter, no one was there to here it.
After she screamed, she could hear her father laughing at
her, as he watched her sadness. It made him happy to see her so sad. She hated
him so much. As he laughed at her his grasp on the knife slipped just a bit,
and she grabbed it from him in an instant and turned it on him. She stabbed him
in the throat, causing blood to spray in her face. She didn’t care anymore what
happened to her; as long as he was dead, she would be happy. His shocked face
stared into her eyes as he slowly fell to the ground dead. He never got a last
word and neither did she, as her brother screamed at her, calling her a bitch.
He then shot her with his gun, which was no doubt a gift from her father.
She was shot in the right side of her chest and she fell to
the ground next to her father. She looked at her brother as his friends forced
him to leave both of them behind. She held her hand to her chest trying to stop
the bleeding, though it was no use. She would die there alone and so close to
her freedom. She would die beside her most hated father. As she died, she looked
at where the train once was and thought, ‘I am so close. I just have to get the
train and everything will be ok.’ But it was not to be. She never closed her
eyes as she watched and waited for a train that would not come.
*End memory*
……………………………….
Most ghosts stayed wherever they were killed, although they
could leave, they often chose not to. Time was different for a ghost than for
us. And things seemed to happen slower for them. This girl stayed there waiting
for the train to stop for her, yet not long after what happened at that
station, they closed it. They had been building a better one not far from
there, and this one would no longer have trains stop since it was not often
used any way. They closed off all trains there after the two bodies were found,
almost three days later.
The train never came. She waited and waited, but it never
came. Her father also inhabited the old train station, though neither seemed to
even know the other was there at all. Kagome had tried to reason with the girl,
telling her to move on, but she would not leave until the train came.
It didn’t make sense to Kagome until she had purified the
soul; when she did she broke down into tears, she was unable to stop. The
flashes she saw of the girl’s life and death were too much to take. As the
young girl began to disappear and move on to a better place to finally be
happy, she turned to Kagome and smiled. Such a smile had never been on her face
before. “Thank you,” she said softly and then she was gone.
Kagome soon found her father on the other side of the
tracks, as if he didn’t know what was going on. He was an evil sprit – there
was no hope of sending him away on his own. Kagome didn’t try, however, to send
him to a better place; she sent him where he belonged. She sent him to what she
called hell. And as she purified him, she yelled “Because of all you have done,
you will not go on to be with your wife again in heaven. You will remain in
hell for all eternity!” He looked scared as he left this world. Seeing the girl’s
life was hard enough without seeing his and knowing how much he really had
enjoyed hurting her. He would pay for all eternity and that was good enough for
her. But the nightmares still plagued her continually. She could not get them
out of her head.
Kagome was a very forgiving person and had never sent a soul
to such a place before that night. She just was not able to forgive the man.
And if she could not forgive the spirits, then they could not move on to the
better place she wanted the souls to go. It hurt her to know that their were people like him out there and she would and could
not let him rest in peace.
Though that case had increased her powers greatly, it had
nearly killed her emotionally. It happened about 7 months ago. She had other
cases since that one, but that one still haunted her greatly.
It always bothered Kagome that she didn’t know the girl’s
name. When she purified souls, she received only the most important memories
and in this case her name had been far from important to the girl. It didn’t
seem as if many people even knew her name, since none of the memories Kagome
saw of her mentioned her name at all. Kagome had tried to find out who she was
through old newspaper articles, but they only listed it as a double murder. The
articles seemed to indicate they had killed each and no one else had been
there. Her father had also had a recently fired gun in his pocket, of a similar
caliber.
They said that he must have shot her after raping her and
then put his gun away to leave when she stabbed him. Because of the poor area,
no one had thought too much of it. No one bothered to look further into this
story, and no one bothered to find out who they were. It was so sad that in the
end this strong minded and beautiful girl had died without anyone even knowing
her name.
Inside her apartment, Kagome faintly heard a ringing sound.
She walked inside and picked up her phone. “Hello?”
“Miss Higurashi?” a cold and demanding voice asked. Kagome
could already tell it was a demon.
“That’s me. How can I help you?” she replied sweetly, even
at the late hour he was calling.
“I am sorry to call so late, but I need your help in
removing some sprits. This is a matter of great importance and I request that
you have your entire team accompany you. I will pay you a great deal of money
to have your team together by the end of the week,” the man stated matter of factly.
“First of all I am not normally paid for these things. We
receive money from donations for our cases. I do not need to be paid at all
though you may donate to us. It will not get us there any faster. Who may I ask
is calling anyway?”
“Again, I am sorry, that was very rude of me. My name is Sesshoumaru Tanaka. I
assure you this is a very important case and I will donate a great deal of
money to your group, but you must be here by the end of the week.”
Kagome sighed into the phone. It
would be hard to gather the entire team by the end of the week. She knew the
name Tanaka from somewhere, but she wasn’t sure where. Then it hit her. Sesshoumaru
Tanaka was the son of the richest and most powerful demon in her time. “You are
the eldest son of Inutaisho Tanaka aren’t you?” she asked, a little surprised
by this. The man had died almost twenty years ago, but was still very well
known. His son took over the family business after his father’s death. As far
as she knew, they never found out what really happened to him. ‘Could that be
who he wants set free?’ she asked herself.
“I am. Now will you help me?” He
sounded more annoyed than he had before.
“I will do what I can for you, but
I think it will take at least a week to have my whole team together. Where are the spirits that you wish me to set free and how many of
them are there?” she asked professionally, as she always did.
“I will meet with you tomorrow at noon in my office to discus the details. I will not tell you
more over the phone. I assume that if you know who my father is, then you know
where my office is?” He heard a “Yes” as an answer and continued. “Do not be
late. I will be expecting you. Goodbye.” He didn’t wait for her answer before
he hung up.
“Good thing I am free tomorrow. I
don’t think that guy would have taken no for an answer.” She sighed again.
Kagome was tired of sighing and tired of people who treated her as Tanaka had.
And most of all she was just tired. Sleep would be a good thing if only her
dreams didn’t betray her. She looked at the clock on the wall that read 2:49 AM and sighed again, despite herself.
“I guess I could sleep,” she said out loud to the empty room. She hoped her
nightmares would not plague her tonight.
She changed into a silk black
night gown. Silk always make her feel better as she slept. She lay down in bed
but did not fall asleep right away. She thought to herself, ‘Something about
that man doesn’t sit right with me. Tomorrow will be interesting.’ After an
hour of lying there, she finally passed out from exhaustion.

Well that’s the prologue I hope
you like it, though not much has happened yet. Let me know what you think. Oh
and for those of you who are concerned, I have NOT given up on Inuyasha’s Love
and Kagome’s Pain. I will finish that story and I hope to do it soon. R&R
So I know if it’s worth continuing. Thanks.
