The fog was thick. Sesshoumaru didn’t look back in search of Jaken, he probably wouldn’t be able to see him. But his nose informed him that the little youkai was still there, just a little behind. Sometimes he wondered why he allowed that little creature around. He was as useless as a human, maybe even more. One service was suited for him at least… carry the Staff of Heads.
He was far from the human village whereabouts now. But he still mused about the reason why he failed to eliminate that stupid aberration that his father insisted to protect with his own life.
Sesshoumaru sped his pace. The dense fog was his refuge now, and he felt satisfied with that.
“Chichi-uê...”
“So... this is your decision.”
“Hai.”
The reply sounded firm and calm, as his pronunciation of departure had been.
“I am not asking you to stay. I am not leaving with you either. You will live completely alone. You know that…”
“I do.”
A strong wind cut the space between them, like a reminder of the distance that kept them apart. The daiyoukai remained still, facing nowhere, showing no intention of looking back at his son’s face one last time.
The younger youkai didn’t expect so.
“Farewell, Sesshoumaru.”
Golden eyes remained fixed on his father figure for a moment. But there was no way to change the inevitable.
“Sayonara... chichi-ue.”
He wasn’t surprised at the fact that his steps led him back to that place. The same place where they had met for the last time, so many years ago, before he took a different path. He never thought his travels would bring him to that place again. However, his long-ago, frustrated search for his father’s tomb, along with the recent encounter with his half-brother, made him come to an important conclusion. He would never get to lay his hands on Tessaiga without looking back at his own past.
Jaken took advantage of the break for a nap. Sesshoumaru wasn’t angry this time. Actually his servant laziness came in hand. He walked away slowly, going up the hill he was so familiar with.
From up there, he could see the whole village. It looked the same, as far as his youkai vision could reach from the distance. How many times had he sworn to himself he would burn that place to ashes? He had lost count…
One more time he just turned his back and continued to walk.
There was a lonely tree down the way. At first he thought it to be new to that area, but soon he realized that it was not. The tree was older and taller now, but he knew it very well.
He approached it and placed his right hand on the tree trunk. There it was… a depression on its surface, still visible, right on the middle of it, seeming out of place with the whole.
There was absolutely no use for such reminiscences in his quest… but he was unable to stop those memories to take his mind completely.
“Sesshoumaru-kun?!” It was a girl voice “Come on, I know you are there!”
“Are you sure this is safe?” asked one of the other girls, all of them dressed in rich kimonos. “It’s a youkai…”
“Well, if you don’t want to meet him, we can go back right now!” she replied contemptibly. She knew better that her cousins’ curiosity exceeded their fear. The young ladies would hardly miss the chance to see a great youkai in human form so closely.
“It’s that I had never been so distant from the village before. We are not allowed to” said one of them, hesitating.
“My Lord says that even women need to exercise once in a while” she assured them, proudly, while leading the visitors to the shadow of a tree. They all sat down.
“Izayoi-chan... Are you really going to marry a mononoke?”
“Hai.” She smiled, blushing lightly.
“And... don’t you think it’s… weird?”
“When I was younger, maybe... but I’m already thirteen. Besides, he’s way more handsome than all the noble’s sons. And he’s kinder too. It’s so bad he stays so little time in the village. I miss talking to him.”
“Ahn...” one of the girls sighed dreamily.
“Ani-ue says that a noble woman can’t fall in love with a mononoke. He says that only village girls fall for them, because they are weak in mind.”
“That’s nonsense...” Izayoi made a face, amused by the other girl’s words.
“Ani-ue says those things because he’s in lov...” she was nudged by her sister before she could complete the sentence.
“Ah, there he is!” Izayoi knelt and waved happily to someone “Sesshoumaru-kun, come over here please!”
Her tone of voice resembled of a girl calling a younger brother... Even so, the other girls tensed, feeling a little insecure while the youkai came near them.
“Have you called me, Izayoi-sama.”
“Yes I have. Please, sit here with us.”
The young youkai expression remained the same, but it was visible that he had accepted the invitation as a duty. He sat on his heels on a typical soldier posture, before the eyes of the nervous, yet fascinated girls.
“Gee....”
“Youkai...”
“You don’t need to be afraid of him. Sesshoumaru-kun is the son of my husband-to-be, and he’s my protector, ne?”
“How old is it… I mean… he?”
“Age doesn’t matter for a youkai. His father told me that if he were a human, he would be approximately our age.”
“He looks so much like real people...” one of them blushed.
“I thought he would have a muzzle with fangs or something…”
“Is he docile?”
“What are these marks on his face?”
“Well...” Izayoi tried to talk, feeling a little embarrassed by the girl’s comments, although Sesshoumaru didn’t seem to even pay attention to them. “They are not marks… they are like birth signs.”
“Can it fly?”
“Can he make any mononoke trick?”
“What does it eat?”
“I like his hair, it’s so exquisite…”
“Izayoi-chan, he looks a little like a girl, don’t you think?”
Sesshoumaru fixed his gaze on a spot of the tree behind them, while the human girls continued their degrading comments. He hated that damned place so much… Still he was obligated to live there, since the day his father decided to marry a human woman. His life turned into a forever waiting for his return, and the never-ending hope that he wouldn’t be left there the next time.
“Well, minna, I think that’s enough!” Izayoi announced, firmly. “It’s time to go back home…”
“Oi! Look, there are the girls!”
All the girls turned to look who had called them. There were three boys coming their way. One of them was a villager and two were also visitors. Sesshoumaru thought about leaving before they got there, but recommendations from his father about visitors from other villages came to his mind. He should be tolerant towards them. Since they were male, maybe they wouldn’t bother him with stupid questions.
“Ani-ue!” the girls looked radiant “Come have a look! It’s Izayoi’s mononoke child!”
“What the hell is this?” the taller of the boys moved forwards. He looked to be the older one as well.
“Takemaru-kun...” Izayoi stood up nervously. She knew his cousin’s temper well enough to know that things could get really ugly. When Inutaishou saved the village five years ago, Takemaru’s father, now passed away, broke relations with her family when he knew that his niece had been promised to be a youkai’s bride by his own brother. Since then, that was the first time her cousins ever came to visit their uncle’s village, as a signal of an agreement for so long desired. Izayoi craved so much for the reconciliation to happen that she didn’t consider the situation before exposing her husband-to-be’ son to the eyes of the visitors.
“We were coming back now…” she commanded.
The other girls stood up as well.
“You women shouldn’t go so far from the village, let alone by yourselves. Don’t you in this village have some manners? Isn’t enough to have youkais around like your own kind? You two” – he addressed his fellows – “take the girls back. Izayoi-sama, forgive me if I sound rude. It seems that my own sisters have forgotten where they came from…”
He would have continued his speech if Sesshoumaru hadn’t got to his feet.
“Oi!” He stood in front of the youkai “Where do you think you are going?”
“Takemaru-kun, please leave him alone!”
“Is this the son of that beast you are going to marry? I thought it was a foreign maid…”
The golden eyes narrowed a little, but the youkai didn’t move. He remained still even when was surrounded by the other boys.
“Takemaru-kun...” The other girls blocked Izayoi’s way, afraid that the girl would behave improperly. “Get out of here, Sesshoumaru-kun! Just leave!” she was able to scream at least.
Her order would be promptly obeyed if the youkai weren’t so closely rounded by the human boys. One of them pulled out a short katana and pointed it to Sesshoumaru. Izayoi closed her eyes expecting the worst. She knew that her stepson-to-be was strong enough to hurt her cousin badly, if he wished so. However she was relieved with the unexpected outcome. Maybe she would even feel like laughing about it later. The youkai just jumped upward all of them, landing somewhere far ahead, easily avoiding the likely fight. Then he just walked away calmly, indifferent to the loud protests of the three young noble young men behind him.
He looked away from the cavity of the tree, while remembering how the events of that day terminated. Two days after meeting the human boys, Sesshoumaru was lured to some place for another turn of jokes and menaces. He wasn’t all that surprised by that, though. It was quite predicable. But as the offenses started to be driven towards his father, he started to feel uneasy about his own self-control. He wouldn’t remember the spoken words or taken actions that night… The only thing he was sure was that something said by the boys made him lost it completely, and he just crushed the head of one of them into the tree trunk. Maybe he had lost control of his power as well, he really didn’t know. Until then, all his life he had been nothing than a faint blow of energy surrounding his father figure. Coincidence or not, that was the year he felt his power begin to increase, even though he had done nothing for that to happen. And that was also the year that changed his life entirely, as so the way he would live from then on.
He opened his eyes a bit when heard soft steps on the wooden floor. There she came again, the annoying human wench. She knelt beside his lain body carefully as he kept on staring at the door, ignoring her presence.
“Sesshoumaru-kun... Look, I have brought these for you...” a bowl was placed in front of him, along with some water “Some fish cakes… I know you don’t like rice…”
He remained still; trying not to think how ridiculous was to get help from that woman. If it were not for her, nothing of that nonsense would be happening in the first place.
“I told your father that my cousin and his friends were harassing you since the day I…”
“It was not necessary. I was disobedient. I deserve to be here.”
“I see...”
“You don’t have to bring me food. I’m not human; I don’t get hungry all the time as you do.”
The statement was direct and rude, although politely said. His forced civility made her feel rejected. It seemed more then clear that her good intentions were not welcome in that room.
“All right... I... I will leave you alone then” she said, a little disappointed.
Before she could reach the door, new step sounds were heard. Inutaishou entered the room, after waiting for Izayoi to leave.
The daiyoukai presence made the young youkai’s body move promptly, even though it took him unusual time take a load off his feet.
“Can you stand?”
“Hai.”
“Follow me.”
He obeyed immediately, regardless of any physical discomfort. The beating a few days ago had been harsh, even though most of the pain had already faded. Detention had been probably the worst part of his punishment. The young youkai wasn’t used to be inside closed spaces for more than a moment or two. Or maybe… it had been the awareness of the fact that he had lost his precious self-control and caused embarrassment to his father among the villagers. That had been a huge blunder, no matter how hard it was for him to understand his father’s attachment to such pitiful creatures.
They walked for some time, till they found a stream near the village. The humans had created a dam using earth and rocks, forming a small lake. The night was cold and there were only a few watchers outside, although less needed since that village was well-known to have youkai living there which was more than enough to keep any undesirable intrusions away.
“Take a bath. You smell so bad that even a human can feel it” he ordered, standing with his back to Sesshoumaru.
“Hai, chichi-ue...” he said in a low voice, as if it had no difference whether he answered or not. In fact it didn’t.
The younger youkai started to undress. He had no bruises anymore, but his skin and clothes were dirty with the dry blood, on the spots he had been struck by this father.
It was the first time his father ever beat him, although he knew he had gotten his father angry before, in spite of following all of his orders and terms the best he could… One thing was obedience, this one always required. Another thing equally important since the very first moment was silence. Slowly but surely, silence became the pact governing their coexistence together, a wordless agreement with simple rules: the son was to remain quiet unless he was asked to speak and never be a burden. The mighty leader of the dogs would never accept to bring along a talkative, inconvenient child. Fair enough, or so it seemed. But even Sesshoumaru was forced to admit that silence alone was not what it takes to behave properly before the daiyoukai…
The boy was naked now, ready to get in the water. Even the white fur had been placed carefully on the ground, near the old grayish haori he used to wear. Shamefully, there was no yukata anymore, since he had become too big for the one he possessed. But at least his father wouldn’t make him take a bath with his clothes on, as some humans did. He stepped into the lake, trying to ignore the chilliness caused by the cold water.
Inutaishou was still in the same position, with his back to him. When Sesshoumaru was younger he used to link the figure of his father to one long ponytail swinging by the wind. That was the angle on which he was accustomed to see him. In early years he even tried to tie his own hair as well, but his father disapproved the hairdo, saying that he looked a lot like his mother that way. She might have used her hair tied, but he really didn’t remember her…
He focused on what he needed to do: remove the blood from his hair. Then he noticed something new about the faint marks he had on his wrists. They seemed larger than before, and a strange humidity came from them. They smelled odd too. How come he didn’t feel it before?
“It’s poison.”
The dry statement made the youngster wide his eyes open. He didn’t understand…
“No, you haven’t been poisoned. It’s your own poison; therefore it isn’t supposed to harm you… theoretically.”
“... mine?”
“Some parts of your body have the ability of purging poison, just like your mother…” He made a significant pause. “It seems like you are becoming a… mature youkai.”
That time Sesshoumaru wasn’t silent. He was speechless. The daiyoukai continued.
“It will take some more time before you can control all of your grown-up abilities… It’s strange you hadn’t noticed it…”
The son took an attentive look at his own claws. Only then he noticed that, indeed, they seemed more sharpened and stronger than before, although his hands were never considered much of a promise by his father.
“When I arrived, I felt that your smell had changed. It’s all over the hills and around the village. It’s not like my smell, but it’s enough to make me uncomfortable.”
“Sorr...”
“Do not apologize. Not for that.”
“I... didn’t mean to hurt the human so much. He…”
“Izayoi told me. For some reason, she cares about you. It’s done now, and you have already received your discipline.”
“Chichi-ue... The humans...”
“Don’t give up so easily, Sesshoumaru. If you began to say it, then finish it.”
“… they don’t like youkai like us.”
“Do you believe to be telling me something new?”
“...”
“Finish your bath already and get dressed.”
He just obeyed. The marks on his wrists seemed to burn.
“Here.”
He looked up, a little astonished. His father was standing right before him, with two stripes of red fire rat cloth on his hand.
“Use these.”
Suddenly it became hard to breathe. The boy took the bandages and tried to twine one of them around his own wrist, but it was so difficult since his skin was all wet and his hands were shaking a little. How clumsy he felt… unable to tie one single remnant… The eyes of his father on him didn’t help as well, but even a sick human would be more skilled.
A strong, larger hand held his arm. Calm and skillfully, Inutaishou started to bandage his left wrist. At that time he was sure that a rock would look less petrified that him. He could even hear his own heartbeats…
“What’s with that red face? Can’t I take care of you once in a while?”
He finished one arm and passed to the other.
“The bandage will not solve the problem, but it will help with the purging until the skin stiffens.”
If it ever does…
The golden eyes focused on the face of the younger youkai, whose expression was lightly confused.
“Time only made you look more and more like your mother.” He took a hair strand between his fingers. “Sometimes I wonder if you really have my blood running in your veins… or you’re nothing more than something that came out of her just to taunt me…”
The fingers abandoned the soft silverfish hair and took hold of the haori collar. The lack of a sash around the boy’s waist made easier to the fabric to go down a little, revealing the pale shoulder, still cold thanks to the recent bath.
“Do you remember when you started to follow me?”
“Hai...”
“Do you know why I allowed it to happen?”
“... No.”
“For some time, I have asked myself this very question every day...”
Surely his son’s apathy would not resist to the strong hand that slid over the curve of his shoulder, heading to his elbow, dragging the haori sleeve along with it. However, the thought soon proved to be mistaken. There was no resistance at all, even when all the upper side of the lad’s clothes went down by his feet. No reaction, either good or bad. His lips were warm despite the cold bath, and softer than any other he had ever touched. This idea flared his imagination and he tasted those lips with greater delight. So inebriating… beyond he would ever imagine.
How long since he had taken another youkai for himself? How long since he could feel the vigor of one of his own kind? Since…
Not a word, not even a sound.
As he forgot himself in that bittersweet savor, he imagined if he had found at least the answer to that same old question.
That damned bitch caused him so much horror for all the youkai standards he was taught since he was born. Nothing wrong with using her offspring to satisfy his hunger for so long neglected.
And if the game of silence continued, so much the better.
He took Sesshoumaru down with ease. If there was any chance the boy wasn’t aware of what was going on, it’d be more then remote by that time. Maybe he’d finally manage to get rid of him that way. One hell of a heavenly way for sure…
Inutaishou held some of the boy’s long hair to prevent him from getting away, unless he tried it hard. If that happened, he’d decide if Sesshoumaru could just go or not. Just in case, the kid’s face was held down to the ground. With the haori gone, the sashinuki didn’t require much labor either. No more obstacles on his way, the Inu no Taishou just went on, without hesitation or care.
In fact, Sesshoumaru was not like his mother. He was so much better. He was lying when said that his son’s smell was unpleasant to him. It was anything but that… on the contrary; he was attracted to it the moment he stepped near the village, long before even considering the possibility of giving it a second thought.
Next time he would worry about addressing some attention to the boy’s blatant callowness, and maybe teaching him so that he would learn how to relax and enjoy. Considering that he stayed, of course. And that really didn’t matter. After all, the night that could be the last one was just beginning.
Sesshoumaru still breathed hard under the bigger and heavier body, eyes closed, accentuating the pink-colored marks over the eyelids. He was covered in cold sweat although his flesh burned. Even so he remained mostly silent and collected, a display of self-control that, giving the circumstances, was quite remarkable. Not even the pragmatic bitch was able no perform such trick.
The young youkai grasped the dog fur under his chest. Somehow he knew that the daiyoukai wasn’t done yet… He tried to let his body lighter this time, and soon the movements started again, sustained by slippery hands that crushed his skin in order to keep his thighs and rear in position. Pain became knifelike once more, demanding all his strength to bear it, but as it kept on going, he began to fell a blank on his mind, and an overwhelming sensation that his body was about to act on his own anytime now.
A moan of agony escaped from his lips as he was bitten somewhere near his shoulder and his neck, and his blood scent became part of the dense, vicious air around them, causing the burning on his groin to be even more urgent than before, and making him to contort ridiculously, like a prey smashed under the great dog’s paw. It didn’t take long before the call of his own flesh rose above his determination. He bit his lower lip hard, while his rear was tore up by the force of the daiyoukai thrusts. If he could see the bloody eyes of his father, he would know that, just like himself, he had already lost most of his mind.
And if his last attempt to cage his groans didn’t work, his attacker wouldn’t even notice.
Eventually it all silenced. The air got filled with some new scents. The threads around Sesshoumaru’s wrists were muddy, fuming like burns and he felt nauseous and lethargic. His arms and legs would not obey him. The beating he had suffered a few days ago didn’t let him so sore, but it was different somehow. Not all that bad, just… exhausting, like never he experienced before; anguishing and yet relieving.
He kept his face down; he just couldn’t stand to face his father then and yet he was glad he didn’t leave him there alone.
His vision was blurred, like some kind of fog was in front of him before drowsiness took him without resistance.
Inutaishou wiped some poison drops from the corner of the sleeping youkai lips with one finger. It burned his skin and hurt, but he just let it. He kept looking at the tiny burn that was being formed up, then closed his eyes. He lowered his head, which was now as heavy as the rest of his body was light.
To be continued….
