Chapter 1: The Start of it All
She kept running, not knowing what to do about the demon behind her. All she could think about was that she wanted to see him one last time before this..this thing caught her.
All this was happening because of Naraku. Inuyasha had wounded his pride by defeating him and now he was back with a vengeance.
It started out as one of those days when Inuyasha got aggravated about every little thing Kagome did so that eventually she ran back home in tears (after going through the well, of course). She had been sitting on the lawn behind their house with her mother complaining to her about what a jerk Inuyasha was when *BOOM* the whole back of their house had blown to shreds!
*Flashback*
"You know, Kagome, you shouldn’t be so hard on Inuyasha. He may say the wrong things at the wrong times, but he really loves you. He just doesn’t know the correct way of showing it." Mrs. Higurashi always had a way of saying things nonchalantly.
"I wasn’t hard on him, Mom. He’s a jerk! If he loves me so much, how come he always runs to Kikyo the second he catches her scent?!" said Kagome as she looked into the forest with tears in her eyes, thinking about how many times this particular situation has happened.
This conversation had arisen because of another unexpected trip home from the feudal era because of Inuyasha’s hurtful words. He had been complaining about her bike being a hassle and slowing the gang down. She tried to explain to him that it was a lot faster than if she didn’t have the bike, BUT this was Inuyasha and it is useless to try and explain things to him. Like always, the conversation turned from arguing to Inuyasha saying something incredibly stupid such as, "If you couldn’t detect the jewel shards, I would have left you behind a lot earlier than now!" This ended with a "SIT" and a dust trail from Kagome’s bike.. along with the scent of tears on the wind.
"Kagome, are you listening to me?" Mrs. Higurashi said with a perplexed look on her face.
"Sorry, Mom, I think I’ll go inside now. Maybe a bath will make me feel-"
*BOOM*
The back of the house exploded! Timbers, plaster and dust came shooting towards them. Kagome managed to avoid a timber shooting at her head at what had to be at least 60 miles an hour. She looked behind her to check on her mother and froze. Mrs. Higurashi was lying on the ground; the timber that had almost taken Kagome’s life was lodged in her abdomen, surrounded by torn flesh and blood. Kagome could almost taste the copper smell of her mother’s blood. She ran to her mother. It seemed to take forever to get to her, like time had slowed down dramatically. Debris and plaster fell around her in slow motion as she ran.
"Mom! Mom, don’t die. Please, don’t die, Mom!" tears were running down her face now. Her world-- black and white. No color, no shades. Just her mom and the timber and Kagome running towards her.
A purplish light had been growing around Kagome as she ran. When she finally got to her mother, she fell to her knees. Her mother’s eyes were closed and her chest was still--blood was flowing from the wound in a rush almost like a nightmarish version of a waterfall.
"No breath.. Oh, hell, no breath.. what am I going to do??" Meanwhile, Kagome’s aura had enveloped her mother. Kagome, who had been trying to clear her vision from the tears because she knew--beyond a doubt--that the damage here had already taken her mother from her, looked down. "What?"
Meanwhile, a cloaked figure was stepping through the wreckage of what used to be the Higurashi home. "Wonderful, it looks like I’ve succeeded with the mother, now for the priestess."
Kagome was looking at her hands, that still held her mother’s blood, in disbelief. She had just seen it a second ago. The timber was lodged through her mom’s abdomen. There is no way she could have imagined it her mom’s blood was still on her hands, but now, her mom had no blood. The timber was on top of her instead of through her. Kagome sprang to action. She pushed the timber off of her mother and leaned close to her mother’s face, cradling her mother’s body in her arms. She felt a wisp of air on her ear. Breath! Her mom was breathing! But how? Don’t worry about it now, Kagome, just get her to a safe place!
"Kagome Higurashi, I’ve been waiting a long time." The cloaked figure made its way out of the wreckage, after taking his precious time and soaking up the distress and heartache Kagome had been emanating. The aura that surrounded her he could deal with. He was much more powerful than this little girl, but he had to be careful. He had seen her fight before.
Kagome looked up in shock. Who the hell? "You are responsible for this!! Why?! Who are you?!"
"Oh, I’m sure you know, Priestess." With a wave of his arm he produced the most evil-looking sword she had ever seen in her life. The sword itself was obsidian black and it had a midnight blue tint in the middle part of the blade. As if it was the embodiment of a vast ocean of death, waiting to swallow the next victim. The color of the blade was not as disturbing, however, as the shape itself. From the hilt of the sword to the tip the whole sword was shaped like a single flame and it glowed with an evil aura.
Something is familiar about that aura. What is it?*gasp* Naraku!! It can’t be! Kagome sat there in shock still holding her mother in her arms. But how? I thought Inuyasha had...? Kagome was filled with a deep dread at the realization she had just made. If Naraku is here, in the present, what happened to all my friends? Inuyasha??!
"Priestess, your friends and mother are no longer among the living and soon, you won’t be either." Naraku then started chanting.
Kagome looked at her mother. She was still breathing. How come he couldn’t tell she was alive? Then she noticed it.. the sense of holy power she had faintly detected. It was her! She was doing it? But how? She knew Kikyo could use her aura in many ways and she knew that she had some holy power, but she never thought she was capable of this! The aura must be masking my mother’s presence. I must have created it when she died and it must have been what brought her back. But she must have come back while she was protected by my aura so that it’s masking her presence! Kagome decided to play his bluff for a while. She concentrated her powers on her mother. She was fine, just unconscious. Then, she focused on Naraku. He was still chanting. Was she strong enough to project her energy into some sort of force like Kikyo? Maybe if she could force him back with a blow or get the rest of the house to crash on top of him she could get her mother to safety or at least hide her mother and herself. So she concentrated on keeping a little of her power on her mother and then focused the rest on the remainder of the house. It started to shake. Naraku stopped chanting and looked up.
"Interesting, Priestess, I did not know you had come so far already." I may have caught his attention, but at least he quit chanting the spell he was about to cast. Then, Kagome was quickly spun around and a deep pain blossomed in her side. What the..? What she saw when she was spun around almost made her lose her mind. It was an enormous mouth with oscillating teeth, two red eyes, and four legs that looked like dogs’ legs, and claws, or more like talons! She looked down at her side and saw that she had some deep scratches from the monster’s claws and that was what had spun her around. Apparently, Naraku had finished his incantation. Where did he summon this thing from?!!
"Priestess, the demon won’t attack you if you do what I say. Unfortunately, for you, the end result will be death either way. One way is just going to take a little longer than the other and it will be more pleasurable for me. If you want your mother to live you will do what I say. Inuyasha is still alive. You will kill him. Though I hate to admit it, that bitch Kikyo saved him as soon as I was about to finish him once and for all. You will be the one to kill him and if you don’t, then your mother will die instead."
Kagome stood there in shock. Finally, she turned around and looked to the ground where her mother was lying. Except, her mother wasn’t there anymore!
"Kagome, don’t do it! You love him! I’ve lived long enough! Please, defeat this man and be hap--" Her mother was cut off by a punch in the back of her head by Naraku.
"Priestess, if you want your mother to live, kill Inuyasha. Unless, you don’t care that she dies." And with that Naraku disappeared into a gray, smoky cloud that threw Kagome into a coughing fit.
"Oh and, Priestess, if you try to warn Inuyasha about your predicament, this demon will finish what I started." Naraku’s disembodied voice faded away.
Kagome turned around. What happened to my aura! Why couldn’t I protect her? This demon must have distracted me when it spun me around. Inuyasha... I can’t kill Inuyasha! He’s a jerk, but I still love him. There is no way I could kill him! Inuyasha! I have to warn him. First things first, I have to get away from this demon. Kagome stood there staring at the horrible looking creature. It let out a low growl. It must have sensed my intention to warn Inuyasha. I have to get to the well! Kagome tried to recall her holy powers, but they eluded her. Dammit! What am I gonna do?? Okay, Kagome, think logically. The things head is unproportionately huge and it probably can’t move that fast at high speeds. You are surrounded by trees. Try to lose it in the woods and swing back around to the shrine house and jump through the well.
The creature started growling more and all of a sudden leapt right towards Kagome. "Shit!!" It can read my mind THAT fast?! Kagome ran in a zigzag pattern towards the trees.
*End of Flashback*
So, here she was, still running. She had tried to loop through the trees to lose it, but it was faster than she thought. At one point, it got close enough to cut her forearm with its rotating, saw-like teeth, until she had swung around a tree and gone in the opposite direction. As she did that, the creature crashed into another tree. Good, that will slow it down a little so that I can get to the well. As she ran towards the shrine house, she hoped that if she brought the monster back to the feudal era, where there were more experienced warriors than in modern-day Japan, that someone would be able to help her. She threw open the shrine door and shut it quickly, throwing the latch as she did so. She leapt straight from the top of the steps into the well. Just as her head was lower than the lip of the well, she heard a huge crash and then everything was void as she traveled the 500 years into the past in search of hope. As she reappeared on the other side of the well, she realized what was wrong with her plan. How would she get out of the well fast enough not to get killed?
