The last and killing blow never happened because Naraku made good his escape thanks to Kikyo. She took the arrow herself causing Inu Yasha to get angry with Kagome during his yelling fit Naraku snuck away. It still hurt her that he would choose the corpse over her but in her heart, she knew there was someone for her. Even now, that Kikyo lay dying in his arms he still curssed Kagome calling her worthless asking why wasn't she dying instead.
Kagome tuned him out turning instead to look at her mourning sister Sango. Miroku at her side trying to comfort her over the death of her brother. He has just regained control of his mind during the battle just to sacrifice himself to save his sister's life.
Sesshoumaru walked to her side placing his hand on her shoulder he handed her the part of the jewel that Naraku dropped in his haste to leave. He watched as the sickening purple half orb turned bright pink as it touched her skin. Over the years of traveling with the group, off and on his respect and admiration for the young Miko grew. He knew she was something special and within her was a great power that is why he offered to train her. He thought she would never have to fight but seeing her in battle with Naraku and his minions he proudly fought by her side knowing his skills her taught her wasn't wasted.
"You fought well little Miko" she rolled her eyes at his little nickname for her but smiled at him warmly.
"You trained me well so I fought to the best of my ability for that I thank you Maru-sama," this time it was Sesshoumaru who rolled his eyes at her nickname for him. Kami she made him feel like a little child when she called him that. He froze a little at the feeling that name caused in him deep inside. He could not put a name to it but it felt nice he guessed but he would not tell her that. It felt almost motherly to him making him miss his own mother in a way.
Everyone was brought out of their thoughts as the jewel shot out of Kagome's hands and twirled around her body. The force of the winds pushing Sesshoumaru away from her and to the ground. She was lifted off the ground into the swirling pink wind as a white light enveloped her. The jewel exploded around her shooting into different parts of her body. Her screams were deafening as they echoed through the wasteland of the battlefield. Everyone watched on horrified as the tortured screams of the tiny Miko continued. The last four pieces shot in her forehead throwing her across the field. She plowed into the ground leaving a mile long crater in the ground.
Everyone was shaken from their shock of what they just witnessed as they raced to the crater looking in.
"Kagome,"they chorused reaching her bleeding body. Sango gasped sobbing again into Miroku's chest as Sesshoumaru jumped down to her body. Inu Yasha paid them no mind choosing instead to stay with Kikyo. 'Good serves her right for hurting my Kikyo,' he thought. staring again at the woman in his arms.
She was on fire from the inside out it felt like her very blood was boiling. Everything hurt but even then the pain grew worst still. She felt herself being lifted slowly as another wave of pain rocked her body.
Sesshoumaru with all the care he could muster lifted her from the crater. He never took his eyes off her pain-racked face as he jumped from the crater and carefully laid her on the grass. He didn't know what to do for her looking over her bleeding form.
She hissed as the cool grass touched her back. However, she did not want to lay down it hurt worst to lie down. She struggled to sit up as Sesshoumaru demand she lay down but still, she did not listen. Sango and Miroku voices add to Sesshoumaru's as she slowly came to her feet her body shaking from the pain her head as awhirl as the ground shifted. Her legs almost gave out but she righted her shaking form opening her eyes to her worried friends.

"What happened Kagome?" asked Sango
"I-I don t know one minute I was looking at the jewel the next it was asking for my wish. I. . "
"Bitch you selfish bitch you took the wish that was meant for me," Inu Yasha raged jumping to his feet. Sesshoumaru was instantly by her side when it looked as if she would fall again. Her mouth moved but no words could be heard she steadied herself again with Sesshoumaru's help.
"Watch yourself Hanyou the Miko made no wish," Sesshoumaru stated. Sango was about to say something but was cut off by another scream from Kagome. She collapsed into Sesshoumaru's arms she felt something pulling at her soul forcing it from her pained body. She tried to hold onto it tried to hold it in but she felt her soul slipping away.
Again Sesshoumaru did not know what to do for her he was heartbroken at the thought of losing her. She had mothered him so much the past few years he did not know what he would do without her there. His eyes grew wide with shock as he heard her heart stop felt her take her last breath. He could not believe it, he would not, it wasn't her time she could not die not now. She always told him she would be there to see him when took his first mate when he had his first pup now. He fell to his knees gripping her body to him praying she would wake up open her eyes and look at him with that smile again. It was as if losing his mother all over again he felt so ... helpless. His eyes burned with unshed tears but Sango was sobbing enough for the both of them. Only Miroku noticed Kagome's soul leave her body and fly toward Kikyo hitting her square in the chest.
Kikyo sat up with a gasp looking around at everyone. Only to be pulled into Inu Yashas embrace.
"What happened why am I not dead?" came her whisper.
"Kikyo I feel your heartbeat," was his happy cry hugging her tighter.
"Inu Yasha how could you and now can't you see .don t you feel... anything?" Sango couldn't finish as she broke down again into a fit of tears. Miroku hugged her tighter to his body as she cried. Both were at a lose their little sister who had fought so hard for their survival and in the end they couldn't save her only stand idly by as the jewel robbed them of their last remaining family. They both just thanked Kami that Shippo was not here to witness this that they had all agreed to leave him at Sesshoumaru's palace with Rin.
Inu Yasha stared smugly at the group not caring about his friend and companion now he was happy the woman he loved was alive again.
"We have to get the jewel Inu Yasha then you can make your wish," Kikyo stated coldly staring at the young Miko.
Sesshoumaru growled gripping her little body closer to him as his eyes bleed red. He and his youkai would not let them defile her body not when she had given them so much. Taking care of them nursing them, mothering them as if they were her own children no they would kill them all before that happen. She was his first and only friend who he, his youkai respected, and she would be buried with the highest honor he would see to that.
Sango, Miroku, and Kilala who flared into her larger form with a roar stood in front of the Sesshoumaru. Blocking them from Inu Yasha and Kikyo they were outraged that their friend would even think about hurting their sister farther. They loved the hanyou but would not let him do this, they would not let him take the jewel Kagome had fought so hard to fix.
"Take her and go," Miroku spoke quickly eyeing the Tai youkai. Sango pulled her giant weapon from her back facing her once friend preparing to fight.
"We will take care of this Lord Sesshoumaru now go. We will not let you lay your filthy hands on our sister," Sango spat.
Not waiting Sesshoumaru formed his cloud and took to the sky still holding the Miko and his arms. The sounds of fighting reaching his ears but he paid it no mind. His mind still on the Miko in his arms she felt so warm like when she was alive her scent still so comforting. Looking at her face, you would think she was sleeping and not dead, as he knew her to be.
