Study Break
The house, in the early years of the twenty-first century, looked ordinary enough. Even though it existed on grounds significantly larger than was usual in modern Tokyo due to the fact that the house was part of a very old Shinto shrine, it was equipped with all of the modern conveniences that people in this day and age took for granted. The family living there was also relatively ordinary: an elderly grandfather who was the priest of the shrine, a mother widowed in an accident several years earlier, a daughter nearing the end of high school, a son preparing to enter middle school, and a lazy, overweight cat.
That was where any resemblance to normality ended.

She looked up from the textbook, her eyes burning and head spinning. She had never enjoyed mathematics, and beginning calculus was giving her a massive headache. To make things worse, she could feel that she was being closely watched.
She turned to see the amber eyes of her lover watching her. She sighed, getting up from her desk and going to him for a quick embrace. “This has got to be really boring for you. My test isn’t until the day after tomorrow. Why don’t you go home until then?”
He shook his head, the long, snowy hair that fell to below his waist shining silver in the moonlight spilling through the window. “Not a chance. I know what you’re like--you won’t eat or sleep until you’ve managed to convince yourself that you’ve mastered this thing. Look at yourself,” he said, gesturing out the window. “It’s after dark. You’ve been at this since early this afternoon.” His hands moved up to feel the tension in her shoulders, brushing across the scar she bore on her right shoulder blade. “If you won’t come downstairs to eat, at least let me bring you something. Then,” he said, almost daring her to disagree, “I want you to come to bed. You won’t remember anything you read when you’re this tired anyway, so why deny yourself the rest your body needs for no purpose?”
She smiled sadly. He had never really understood how important her education was to her and her family. Still, he had scrupulously kept to the agreement he had made with her family when he had been allowed to take her as his mate--not only had he never again argued with her about returning to the present time to attend classes and take tests, but he had provided what support and encouragement he could despite not really understanding the situation. “You’re right,” she said. “I had no idea it was so late. You must be getting absolutely claustrophobic by now. Why don’t we go downstairs, get something to eat, and go outside for a while?”
His expression of relief was almost comical. He had begun to fit so well into her world that she sometimes forgot that he had lived most of his life alone in the forests of the Sengoku Jidai, hunted by humans and youkai alike--no wonder he was frequently uncomfortable around large groups of people or spending long periods of time inside buildings. He rubbed his thumb across the scar he had left on her shoulder, enjoying the shiver it caused when he applied even slight pressure on the sensitive place. His voice seemed to deepen slightly. “Let’s go, then.”
Stopping briefly in the living room to apologize for missing dinner, she led him to the kitchen and an assortment of leftovers. Packing what looked to her like enough food for eight people, she led him out into the shrine’s courtyard, to the bench under the spreading branches of the Goshinboku, the holy tree that marked the center of the shrine--the tree to which he had been sealed more than five hundred years ago. As always, a sense of peace descended on her as she approached the tree. Her mother had spoken to her once of the same feeling that came over her, and how it had influenced her decision to marry the man who would one day become her father. The younger woman couldn’t quite shake the feeling that it had somehow been the soul of her own mate bringing them together so that they would eventually create her for him.
In any case, she had been born, dragged through the shrine’s dry well into the Feudal Era on her fifteenth birthday, freed the hanyou sealed to the tree, embarked with him on a two-year-long quest, sought treasures and fought battles, made friends and enemies, and somehow still managed to maintain at least the façade of a more-or-less normal life in the present-day world. After their quest had ended and wrapped up all the loose ends of the hanyou’s old life, he had finally forced himself to admit the feelings he had developed for the human girl, feelings that mirrored her own hopeless love for the rude, self-centered, and frequently violent young man.
Seated on the bench, they rapidly demolished what would otherwise have been a small meal for several people. Pulling her close against him, he wrapped an arm around her shoulder, stroking the ebony hair that had always fascinated him. “You,” he said with a light squeeze to her shoulder, “Work way too hard. What are you doing all this for, anyway?”
She sighed. They had been over this so many times…but for some reason, the rationale behind her need for an education always seemed just beyond his grasp. “You understand how much I love your world, and our family there, right?”
He nodded slowly, suddenly aware of a faint shift in her scent, something he hadn’t anticipated when he had followed her out here. Trying valiantly to ignore the intoxicating fragrance coming from his mate, he asked, “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Well, you understand that I also love my family here, and that this is my first home, right?”
The white-furred triangular ears at the top of his head drooped as he nodded in agreement. “Yeah.”
“The thing is,” she said, resting a hand on his chest so that she could feel the pounding of his heart even through his clothes, “That I don’t really want to give up either of my families. This means that I have to be able to live in either world. Now I know that you can provide for anything that we might need in the other world, but your skills don’t exactly fit here. On this side of the well, it’s my job to provide for us. I think I know exactly how to do it, but it’s going to take another four years of school. The good news is that the conditions at the university are pretty different--I’ll be able to live with you openly, and we can even finally have that pup we’ve been talking about.”
He shivered slightly at the thought that they would finally be free to love each other without the hindrance of the small clear patch she wore on her hip much of the time. He had, of course, understood that by the standards of her world she had been too young to bear a child, but that knowledge didn’t remove the pain of taking active steps to prevent one. “And the bad news?” he whispered.
“The bad news,” he whispered, pulling him closer so that she could tuck her head under his chin, “Is that there will be even more work, and that it’ll be harder than what I’ve done so far.”
Deciding to change the subject in an attempt to make it a little easier to ignore the scent of his mate in heat, he asked, “You never told me exactly how you plan to feed us on this side of the well. What are you planning?”
She laughed out loud. “Our lives are like something out of a book of legends. After what we’ve been through together, I figure I have enough stories for a hundred books. I’m going to study literature so that I can learn to write them.” At his sudden silence, she looked at him sharply. “You don’t mind, do you?”
He thought about it for a few seconds, trying to rid himself of the scent of her growing desire. “No,” he said. “I don’t mind. Just try not to make me look like too much of an idiot.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” she said, reaching up to trace the outline of a soft, furry ear with a fingertip.
His voice sounded odd, almost strangled. “Don’t--”
She pulled her hand back as though she had been burned, dropping her eyes. “Sorry. I thought you liked that.”
“I do,” he growled. “Way too much. You’re in heat, woman.”
Without looking at him, she nodded slowly. “I know.” Turning to stare directly into his golden eyes, she continued, “That’s why I took the patch off this morning.”
He swallowed hard, her words triggering a pleasant but possibly unwelcome reaction in his body. Almost smirking on the inside, she continued, “It’ll probably take a couple of months before I can actually conceive, but that will give us time to practice.”
“Practice…?”
“Unless you don’t want a pup right now….”
“Gods….” he moaned, pulling her tight against his chest, an almost unbearable heat gathering in his loins.

In the darkness beneath the branches of the Goshinboku at the center of the Higurashi family shrine, two lovers pleasured each other long into the night. When both had finally achieved complete satisfaction, the hanyou from centuries past lifted his human mate easily, leaping to the low roof outside of her bedroom window, and placed her in her bed. Stretching out beside her, he held this most precious of gifts in his arms, determined to destroy anything that threatened to take her from him.
Closing his eyes, he allowed her soft breathing and slow, steady heartbeat to pull him along with her into a deep, dreamless sleep.
