“Dream a Little Dream”
April 10, 1553, Two Months Ago . . .
‘Always . . .’ InuYasha mused with a sound growl as he glared at the Tetsusaiga again. His grip on the hilt strengthened when he
spun around to avoid another tendril. It always came down to the last second, just before the vile demon known as Naraku would
flee, and the search for him would begin all over again. “You’re not gettin away this time, you bastard!” he snarled as he savagely
tore through Naraku’s body with another virgule from his transformed blade.
InuYasha snorted just before the recoil from the attack hurled him back and he slid across the ground. Using Tetsusaiga as an
anchor, he pulled himself to his feet. ‘Don’t let them die in vain, InuYasha . . . what would Kikyo have done?’

His eyelids opened slowly, taking in the sight of the lusterless and misty skies as the clouds flowed with a sheet of rain that
obscured his view. His tedium was a palpable thing, giving him a reason to brood and not speak, allowed him time to
contemplate how to get through the rainfall without getting Aun and Rin wet. He didn’t much mull over how he was to aid Jaken
from getting soaked. Rolling his eyes furtively and heaving an inaudible sigh, Sesshoumaru frowned at how much he had
changed.
Normally, he kept these thoughts contained in a stronghold within the confines of his mind, but today, they seemed to be able to
slip through and bombard him with their incessancy, and push him to the thought of ripping something to shreds. But he was Tai-Youkai, which meant he should be able to disregard such trivial thoughts. “Eh, Lord Sesshoumaru?” Jaken called. Sesshoumaru
pretended not to hear him. “Um, Milord? Are we going to stay here through the night?”
The toad demon cringed at the sharp tone in his lord’s voice and straightened his back. “Y-yes, milord?”
After a time, Sesshoumaru moved to peek out from under the cover of the flap over the abandoned hut at the coming storm.~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~∞~
“No, wench, now leave me alone!”
“InuYasha . . .”“No!”
“Why not?” “I just ain’t gonna let him do it!” InuYasha argued.“But you’re always so mean when you talk to him, please come down and consider it.” Kagome pleaded.
InuYasha snorted. “Keh, you’ve got it all wrong, wench! Now go away!”
“Come on,” Kagome insisted. “we’ll even stop calling you doop–-head . . .” she offered, speaking of the new word Shippo had
begun calling the callous hanyou. Everyone else just seemed to join in—it had seemed natural, at the time, to tease InuYasha
out of his shell.
InuYasha deliberated that for a moment, then called down, in an almost reasonable tone, “No.”
Kagome lowered her eyebrows into a fierce scowl as they drew together. “Dog-boy . . .”
InuYasha growled very dog-like from his position in Goshinboku as Kagome called up to him for the sixth time. “Don’t even think
about it, wench.” he warned.
“Please?” she pleaded as her expression suddenly turned soft.
His snort signaled her defeat in this argument as she stormed off toward the village and audaciously called out, “Osuwari!”
InuYasha plummeted to the ground faster than he could react. As he dragged himself out of the dirt, pulling leaves out of his hair,
he grumbled to himself. “Stupid wench, always asking me for favors.” This time, it had gone too far for him to even fully consider
agreeing to the idea. Teaching Shippo how to hunt was one thing, but letting the boy have his own weapon was another. It
surprised him as well, how quickly Kagome had adjusted to the thought of the runt having his own weapon
‘Not in my lifetime . . .’ he mused with a sound growl.
InuYasha dragged a clawed hand over his face as he stared after Kagome, and her form vanished into the forest leading to
Kaede’s village. ‘Stupid wench. Doesn’t she realize how dangerous the forest is at night?’ he grumbled as he trudged through the
brown leaves after her.
“Reckless, miserable hanyou . . .” muttered a calm yet annoyed voice from deep within the shadow of the forest. He was so
impulsive, he didn’t seem to notice the apparent danger all around him. Why did it feel like his brother was always slipping further
and further away from his protection, even whilst Sesshoumaru’s facade seemed to be fading? Letting the branch go and
absently watching as it wobbled back into place, the elder brother of the fang let his aureate eyes drop to the autumn leaves. ‘It is
nearly winter. Will you protect her as father did your human mother, InuYasha . . .?’
His search for answers had eventually led him to a mountainous region, where the scorched earth met the base of the crag rocks
evenly. The valley of the dragons had been abandoned for at least a good two centuries. After the knights returned and fought for
their lands, only to be defeated by the grand dragon, Vincent . . . Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes. It really had been a while. As
it were . . . the lands were bare. A thick greyness settled into everything in the canyon. A shame, the sacrifice the dragons had
made just to survive.
‘Father risked everything to let that human onna survive as well. And yet still . . . I cannot begin to understand why . . .’ Turning
on his heel, Sesshoumaru strode away, back into the darkening forest.

“Mistress Kaya?”
The dark, silken sheets caressed her light pink skin as she stared up at the canopy of her bed and narrowed her milky silver
eyes. How long had she been forced to wait? It had to be at least a good two centuries, maybe more. She tapped her claws on
her flat stomach, tracing the lines of kana and kanji written in a thin violet all over her body. It would never come off, a perpetual
reminder of her past sins. Ignoring the quiet call from the other side of her door, she pulled the sheets up to her chest, tossing
her feet over the edge of her bed.
Quietly, quickly, she strode over to the long, transparent curtains of her balcony. “Mistress . . . ?” the voice called again. She
disregarded her friend’s call and heaved a longsuffering sigh as she stared up at the sky that was the same color as her hair.
“Kaya . . . Marin . . . Zoe . . . Haru . . . Kiko . . . whatever you’re calling yourself today, please come out, I’m sorry . . .”
The edge, the rumble in his tone reminded her of someone . . . of him . . . His wheat eyes, the gentle touch of his claws on her
skin as he picked her up and asked her if she was okay . . .
Looming over her, his eyes were luminous even when shadowed. Her lush lips parted, trying to mouth her thanks, but she found
herself simply lost in his eyes. The vine- like lace of her broken violet armor fell under his scrutiny as he checked her for injuries.
She pulled herself up on his shoulders, trying to see over him as he lifted her into his arms as to carry her.
The brown and green steaming corpse of a large mammoth youkai melted out into five pieces, lay a few feet from them, already
beginning to rot. “Are you all right?” he asked, his voice deep, hard.
She suddenly realized that she had just shivered. Panicked, she tried to fight down a hard blush as she looked up at him. His
thick eyebrow was raised, poised to take her breath away. “Y-yes, I-I’m all right . . .”
Blinking to dispel the memory, the girl pushed a lock of midnight blue hair behind her right ear as she gazed up at the stars. Just
like the night when she felt her heart was beating so fast she thought she was going to die. The night when her hero had saved
her . . .
