The Ruse
The Demon Lord of the Western Lands
surveyed his little camp, feeling satisfied with himself. They’d made good time today despite the
setbacks.
The child, the dragon, and his
retainer had already lost themselves to unconsciousness, exhausted from the
trying day. His little group had been
challenged not once, not twice, but three times by other youkai, made brave by
their power stolen from jewel shards.
Even he’d had to fight – usually he left such menial demons to his
retainer to dispose of – while the dragon had kept Rin from harm.
Still, he was no weak youkai. He was a lord after all, and far more
powerful than anyone truly knew.
Certainly, he had his mask that he hid behind, but he was only being
prudent. All the strength in the world
wouldn’t protect against a knife in the back, and the daiyoukai rather
preferred living. But
pathetic little youkai who needed shards to feel brave? No match for him.
The girl was probably a liability,
though. He’d almost left her corpse in
the forest when they’d come upon her, but something had caused him to act on
her behalf. Perhaps it was because she
was so small – he’d always had a tiny soft spot for small creatures. Then, after her resurrection, she’d followed
them around like a pitiful little puppy.
He didn’t really care for her one way or the other, but he allowed her
to stay with them for one simple reason – it was infinitely amusing to watch
her and his retainer together. And if
there was one thing the demon lord knew, it was that over the long march of his
seemingly endless years, amusements came few and far between.
As much as his retainer might deny
it, he loved that little girl. Love was
a weakness that the daiyoukai was completely unfamiliar with, but his retainer
was hardly as strong as he was. So the
lord was content to watch the interaction between the two of them and be amused
by it. Someday soon, though, he would
probably have to rid himself of the girl, leave her at some small village. She was getting to be too much of a
distraction, and he had important things to do.
It truly was a pity. He would
miss her endless chatter and his retainer’s failures to keep her in line.
Ah well, there was always
Inuyasha. As repugnant and annoying as
the filthy hanyou was, he was at least always good for a little sport. It was one of the reason’s he’d never
revealed the truth to the half demon.
While the truth might not
change the interactions between them, the lord wasn’t quite willing to take
that chance. Better that the mongrel keep his illusions and bitterness and always be
ready to fight. Granted, Inuyasha was a
simple creature, and the truth probably
wouldn’t affect him much, but the daiyoukai was jealous of his amusements.
Although, how interesting would it
be if the hanyou knew the truth, if he discovered that his half-brother truly
didn’t hate him? That
in a strange, twisted way, Sesshoumaru cared for the half-breed brat?
The lord snorted quietly. It would be amusing once, and then the fun
would be over. Well, perhaps if the
fighting between their groups became stale, he’d reveal everything. Perhaps not.
This wandering of his had been a
stroke of genius though, if he said so himself.
His father had left him lands in turmoil, having gotten himself killed
over the most foolish thing, and the youkai lord had been hard pressed to assert
his authority over his domain. He’d
begun his wandering with his retainer in tow to subdue his territories, and
another stroke of genius had struck him.
Thus began his ruse, the carefully constructed mask that protected him.
Now he’d been traveling for so long
that few were alive who remembered the truth.
No matter – when the time came to assert his dominance in his court, he
would have little trouble crushing any who stood before him. He was strong. Everyone else was weak. Even the “great” Dog General had been weak,
brought down by his foolish love of a mortal woman.
The Lord of the Western Lands
scanned the area once more and, satisfied that all was safe, he settled in for
the night. Leaning up against a tree,
preparing to enter a meditative state, he heard his retainer stir. Curious, he cracked open one eye to see the
weaker youkai gazing at him, trust and adoration apparent in those swirling,
golden depths.
“Jaken-sama,” said his retainer,
“were you pleased by this Sesshoumaru’s fighting today?”
The daiyoukai sighed. How like his father the
little pup was, always needing reassurance and a kind word. Still, the Dog General had served his Kappa
King well, and his eldest son was an acceptable replacement.
“Hai,
Sesshoumaru-kun,” Jaken replied. “Sleep
now. We travel far tomorrow.”

A/N: Heh. Just a dorky little drabble
that occurred to me while I was attempting to channel Jaken for Chapter 4 of Blank.
Plus, once thought, the idea of
Jaken saying “Sesshoumaru-kun” just wouldn’t leave me alone (sorry
Sesshoumaru). =D
