Chapter One
Gentle
summer rain floated down from the clear sky to kiss the heated ground below. The
single occupant of an isolated spring giggled with childish glee as she dove
under the cool waters. A grumble of
annoyance filtered its way though the dense underbrush that surrounded the
spring to reach the young nymph’s ears.
Rin made her way to the steep bank and pulled herself up to rest her
chin on her arms while looking quizzically at Jaken, the impish shimmer never
leaving her eyes. “What are you grumbling about now, Jaken-sama?”
Jaken, startled out of his deep
reverie, turned to glare at Rin. “You foolish human whelp!
You know not of the important matters that I partake in on a daily basis! I am
bewildered as to why Lord Sesshoumaru bothers keeping you around. What use
could he possibly have with such an ignorant and impertinent youth? Always
wasting time, jumping around causing such distrac…”
Rin was accustomed to Jaken’s rants and slid off the rocky edge she had been
holding herself on, ignoring the self righteous toad. She had more important matters to attend to,
like contemplating the mystery of her Lord Sesshoumaru.
It had been nearly three years now
that she had been traveling with the two demons and the pack animal,
Ah-un. The summers were spent traveling
around her Lord’s territory, securing it from hostile and invading youkai. The second half of autumn and winter,
however, were spent in the confines of the Lord’s tucked away castle. Rin had long since learned that the winters
were far too harsh for her frail human form.
This was not a lesson easily learned, and that first winter had nearly
been the death of her. Rin floated into the center of the spring, reflecting on
the events and the bitter cold of that evening that nearly sent her back to the
darkness that Sesshoumaru had first pulled her from.
Chrunch, crunch, crunch.
Rin
pulled her winter kimono tighter around her small form as she sped up a bit to
catch up to Sesshoumaru’s quicker pace. Jaken, having fallen into a hibernating state
was being toted along in a Jaken-sized pack on Ah-un. Rin giggled to herself thinking about his
prone form. She had been making a habit
of poking and prodding the comatose kappa every chance she could; at least
until Sesshoumaru had put a definite end to it with one of his curt orders,
“Rin, that’s enough.”
Since
then, she had been patiently following Sesshoumaru, watching the sun quickly
travel across the sky knowing that soon it would be time to find a place to
camp for the night. Examining the sleeves of her kimono, Rin grinned in
appreciation of the garment that her Lord had given her toward the end of
autumn. One drawback that she had noted
was that it greatly restricted her movement.
She sighed, pulling her hands further into her sleeves and crossing her
arms, trying to trap more heat to her body.
If nothing else, her Lord’s quick pace kept her moving and slightly
warmer.
Sesshoumaru
stopped suddenly, sending Rin into a near stumble before she caught herself by
grabbing onto the hanging reins of Ah-un.
Smiling up at her Lord and teeth clattering she
inquired, “Should Rin go gather the fire wood for the night, Sesshoumaru-sama?”
Sesshoumaru
gave a slight nod and headed off in the opposite direction, leaving Rin and the
pack animal to scrounge for firewood and to clear some of the snow to make a
suitable campsite. This had become their
routine for the evenings. He would go off to find some prey to bring back for
the little girl, and she would prepare a fire and await his return.
Letting
go of the reins, Rin scuttled off into the white forest, digging out twigs and
thick branches that had been protected from the snow by the autumn leaves. Before she realized it, she had wandered too
far from Ah-un. She could no longer hear the sounds of the pack animal as he
shoved the snow away from the intended camp area. The only sounds that filtered through her
senses were that of her own breathing and the crunching of the snow beneath her
feet. Were it not for her tracks in the
snow, she would have been worried about finding her way back.
Seeing
a fallen log across a clearing, Rin pounced over to it, oblivious to the
‘crack! crack!’ of the ground beneath her. Scooping
the snow from around the log, she grabbed a thick branch from beneath the iced
over leaves. Satisfied with the amount
she had gathered, she turned to head back to Ah-un. However, barely halfway
through the clearing she felt a cold wetness surround her feet and quickly pull
at her ankles. She stopped in her tracks and adjusted the branches in her arms
so that she could look down to her feet just in time to see the ice beneath her
give way.
“Ah!”
Was all that Rin managed to cry out before she was pulled to the murky depths.
Rin felt a sudden chill and snapped
back to her current state. She doesn’t
remember anything after she fell through the ice. She reasoned that the shock
of the freezing water sent her tumbling into unconsciousness. When she woke up, she was in a warm and soft
bed inside a large room. Sesshoumaru had
walked into the room and informed her that this new place was to be their
residence from then on during the winter.
She didn’t question him, and that’s how it was.
Swimming back to the rocky edge
towards Jaken, Rin attempted to pull herself up out of the spring, but the
slick rocks made it more difficult than she had first anticipated. After a few failed attempts, Jaken who had
noticed her struggle came over with a smug look on his face. “Now what do we have here? A baka ningen who has gotten
herself into yet another situation
that she cannot get herself out of? You should have thought about how you would
get out before you got in. Now look at yourself! The perfect
prey for any hungry yokai or rapi—oieeeeee!!” Splash!
Rin smiled brightly up at her Lord
who had appeared where Jaken was standing. “Ohayo Sesshoumaru-sama! It seems as though Rin has gotten herself
stuck!” Rin glanced behind briefly to
look at Jaken who was making a horrible noise as he splashed around and
struggled to swim to an edge to climb out.
When she turned back to her Lord, his hand was extended down and waiting
for her to accept.
Gladly accepting his hand, Rin
curled her fingers around it. With no
effort, Sesshoumaru lifted her out of the spring and set her down on solid
ground. Without word, he turned away and headed back into the dense
forest. Rin stared after him for a few
brief moments, then turned to retrieve her clothes
that were sheltered under the branches of an ancient tree.
“Hmm, when did the summer rain
stop?”
“Stupid girl! That should be the least of your worries! GET
ME OUT OF HERE!”
Rin giggled, “For a kappa you don’t
swim too well!”
Jaken continued to mumble
profanities under his breath, mindful to keep an eye out for Sesshoumaru, who
had been severely agitated with him as of late.
What could be on his Lord’s mind that would bring him to be so violent
with his loyal servant? ‘It must have something to do with the girl! It always
does.’
“Hurry up and get dressed! Its bad
enough you prance around naked like a common who---!” With a heavy thud, the kappa was once again
floored with two heavy welts beginning to form on his skull.
Rin turned around to see her Lord
once again in their presence. She quickly finished wrapping her kimono around
her and tying the obi. “Thank you for
stopping so that Rin can go for a swim, Sesshoumaru-sama! But the day is still young and the summer
rain has stopped, are we going to continue onwards?”
Sesshoumaru studied Rin’s face. Nearly
eleven years old now, she had scarcely changed from when their paths had first
crossed and he brought her back from death.
Granted, she was taller, her hair a bit longer, and not as awkward in
her movement. She was still a child. If
she were still among humans, more than likely she would already be promised to
someone. He took an experimental
sampling of her scent and confirmed his suspicions. For the past couple weeks it has been
changing, from the light scent of innocence to the heavier coils of womanhood. She would bleed soon, and the forest on his patrols
of his lands was no place for her to experience her first blood.
“Rin, we will be returning home
early this year.”
“Really? When?”
“Now.”
“Ok!”
Puzzled by her Lord’s sudden need
to return home, Rin obediently complied and gathered her supplies, placing them
back in Ah-un’s packs. They were about three days from the Lord’s
castle, but one and a half days if they traveled at a rapid pace. Rin stole a glance at Sesshoumaru once more
taking note of the determined set of his jaw.
Yes, she was certain that for whatever reason, her Lord would want to be
returning as quickly as possible.

End Chapter One
Here is the story that I had up a couple months ago, I am
reposting it and reworking the plot all together to coincide with the
Sesshoumaru/Rin series that I am building. On the timeline, this story takes
place a few years before “Intrusion on the Innocent.”
Reviews are always welcome and greatly appreciated. Mind you, this is still a work in progress,
and there may be some things in here that don’t match up with IotI right now, but as both develop, you will be able to
see it more and more.
