It was awkward moving his things into the decidedly feminine room. Three large boxes sat on
the frilly pink bed in the far right corner, and an unfolded pile of jeans, t-shirts, and boxers
scattered the floor in front of a flower sticker covered dresser. It was a clash made in hell.
The slightly plump young man standing in the doorway sighed, brushing black bangs out from
behind his glasses where they prickled at his eyes.
He didn’t like the idea of moving into his sister’s old room- Oh, it was spacious and came with a
sturdy desk; unlike the one in his old room that wobbled when a pencil passed over the surface;
but it just seemed wrong to place his things and walk in and our freely in a place that he’d been
repeatedly kicked out of all his life. The walls were ingrained with the smell of Kagome’s
favorite body spray and the bed’s pillows, not yet washed, still reeked of her flowery shampoo.
She may have left months ago, but this room... it was hers and it was letting Souta know it at
every turn.
And his parents had thought giving him the bigger room would be a wonderful surprise for his
seventeenth birthday.
Of course, they had also promised to buy all new covers for the bed and to help him get settled
in, but there was still one problem; Kagome hadn’t taken anything but clothes with her when she
ran off with her “fiance”. No one wanted to touch her things.
Souta sighed again and stepped - his- room. Just one step. Long toes wiggled and buried
themselves in the deep, fluffy pink rug, ignoring the color in favor of savoring the softness.
First things first; Souta needed to claim the desk as his own. Homework demanded that space, at
the very least, to be cleared for full use.
Souta closed in on the lone piece of furniture. A quick swipe of a hand over the surface sent a
colorful bunch of used sticky pads and a matchless earring into the trash bin. He had no use for
those and Kagome had a husband who, hopefully, could buy her new jewelry. On to the drawers.
The first drawer was full to the brim with nick-knacks varying from private looking folded
papers and hair clips, to- dear God- an empty tampon box. Souta carefully picked around the
bright green box, nose wrinkled, and made a pile out of whatever he thought Kagome would kill
him for throwing away. The rest was dumped into the trash bin.
The second drawer was empty except for a stale smell, crumbs, and little abandoned spider nests
in the corners... Kagome had probably used it to stash the after-dinner treats their parents loathed
to catch them eating- they had stopped reinforcing the sweets rule quite some time ago, so the
drawer would have lost its purpose.
The third and final drawer was empty the first time Souta looked- or seemed to be. It rattled as
he shut it. Souta opened and closed the drawer a few times to pinpoint the movement. Clearly,
there was nothing rolling along the bottom... or stuck in a corner... Souta huffed frustratedly, too
curious to let the sound go, and stuck his hand in to feel around-
Got it!
The object peeled easily from the roof of the drawer, having been held there loosely by a strip of
old scotch tape. Brown eyes blinked down at the clear oval in his palm, a string of shining beads
spilling through his fingers in the tell-tale loop of a necklace. He could almost feel the whoosh as
deja vu swept over his brain.
“Where’ve I seen you before...?” Souta whispered breathlessly, suddenly very aware of how
sound carried in his family’s old house- a fact he’d been taking advantage of to project his loud
sighs of displeasure to his parents. The necklace was familiar; it looked like one of the many
trinkets his grandfather sold over the years; but it carried the warm feeling of exhilaration that
came with a secret, or treasured memory. He didn’t want to share it.
Souta glanced sideways, eyes narrowed in consideration. He really shouldn’t handle Kagome’s
things any more than necessary, even if she had abandoned them... if his parents caught him
snatching trinkets....
Carefully resticking the tape, Souta returned the necklace to the place where he found it, gaze
locked on the clear, clean jewel in the center until it went out of sight beneath the wood. There
was no harm keeping it there. The desk was his after all.
