Chapter
1: Unlimited Determination
Kagome straightened her scrubs, made
sure that her laces were knotted just right to stay throughout the twelve plus
hour shift she knew was about to come and double checked the staying power of
her high pony tail. She only wore the
barest hint of eye make up because this was the night shift, and she preferred
to not look like a raccoon. This was
the lot in life for a nurse with little to no seniority. Oh well, she didn’t have to deal with the
patients being awake too often. Some of
them could get really rude.
Name tag and pen necklace in place,
she dashed into the nurse’s station and began to grab the files for the
patients that she had to check on and what she had to check. When she finally finished school, it just
seemed as if the medical field called her in.
She didn’t have the grades to be a doctor, and she knew that she could
pay for that much medical school, so she finally decided that she would enter
nursing school after her first year of college.
For the time being, she was in the
geriatric wing. This would change soon,
yet again, because she was just ferried from wing to wing and even in the
emergency room depending upon where her presence was needed. She loved Mr. Totashi and Mr. Monasau. Those two would have insomnia from time to
time and play different games such as Go, chess, checkers and several card
games. Both seemed to attract the
other’s attention because they were both widowers and still full of life and
humor. When she finished her rounds on
the nights they were up, they would beg her to play so that they could play
other games. She knew that they were
flirting, but they were harmless and lonely with the exception of each other’s
company.
Stepping into the eighth room for
night, she noticed that Mrs. Rochshii was still awake and watching TV.
“Good
evening. Having trouble sleeping? Do you need anything?” Kagome asked
cheerfully.
“No. Not a thing,” came the short reply.
Kagome suppressed a shiver at the
reply and the tone in the woman’s voice.
She was understandably bitter.
Her husband had died in this wing less than three weeks ago. Now, she was here because of a broken
hip. Apparently, she had been changing
a light bulb or something and fell off the ladder. Dangerous enough for a younger person, possibly lethal to someone
who was about to be 98. The woman was
stubborn, that much was plain as her face.
Kagome gave a polite bow and replied,
“Just buzz the nurses station if you need anything. I will be here all night.”
She scribbled down the recent stats on the chart and replaced it outside
the door.
Coming to the next door, she crept in
as quietly as she possibly could as to not wake up the patient in this
room. The woman was sweet, but
suffering from Alzheimer’s and kept confusing her with a cat she used to have
many years ago named Moirai. She looked
up the word and had to laugh and then cry at the irony. It was the name for the three fates collectively
in Greek mythology.
She sure had felt like Fate’s play toy
quite a few times. She was given the
rarest chance in the world. She may
have been the only ever to be gifted as she was. She had a rocky time then while bonding with her group, but they
had been happy years. Years that she
would never trade for anything, a better career, money, anything. She never knew what became of Inu
Yasha. She knew with all her heart and
gut that Miroku and Sango had gotten married and had the babies that she knew
both of them had wanted… maybe plus a few knowing Miroku as she did.
She had tried to find out about them
through the records of genealogy reports along with census reports, but they
were just too hard to find. Names
change over time and people move away.
She could only hope that she would figure it out one day. She was on hiatus from it, not giving up.
Seeing that neither gentlemen were
playing or up tonight, she headed back to the nurse’s station. She was skating through some paper work and
filing it when the phone rang to her right, causing her to jump. ‘Oh, that must be Mrs. Rochshii,” she
thought. Picking it up quickly, she
answered.
“Hello,
Silent Lake Hospital. This is Nurse
Higurashi Kagome speaking. How may I
help you?” she inquired politely and firmly.
“Higurashi,
we need you to swap with Nurse Cing for the next few weeks. She has had a nasty fall and cannot work the
ER. She is on her way, so you need to
be here STAT.”
The phone buzzed in her ear when the
doctor hung up. She gathered the last
of what she was doing and put it away quickly before hurrying over to the
ER. She really despised the ER, but it
was a fact of her life. It was loud,
messy, full of adrenaline and could be scary.
Thankfully, she had the best training
in battle with Inu Yasha and her group.
There was nothing new this doctor could throw at her. And, most people had trouble working with
him. That was why he usually worked
nights during the week.
When she got there, she immediately
jumped into one of rooms and did the prep work on a child that had been waiting
with a sprain from falling off of a slide at a local playground.
Finishing, she stepped out of that
room and was ushered into the prep room before scrubbing down and entering the
operating room. It was an emergency
c-section. Routine, but still
stressful.
She stood to the side, handing the
necessary tools to the doctor as he requested them. She monitored the stats of both the mother’s monitor and the
baby’s. The fluids were flowing smoothly,
and the mother was blissfully under the influence of one narcotic or another.
Mere minutes later, the baby’s wail
filled the room. The mother gave a
goofy smile and stroked the cheek before it was taken away to be cleaned, blood
drawn and all of the other necessary things.
That was for the pediatric nurses to do. She had to get back into the emergency room. Their job was done.
“About
time for you to get in here,” the doctor said snidely.
This is where Inu Yasha’s honing for
her patience came in, she just gave a single, curt nod and smiled to a modest
degree. She knew it irritated this
doctor, but it worked. This is what got
her any degree of respect was to be able to work along this doctor at all. He was demanding, harsh and could be downright
rude to anybody. She was also a
“natural” at smoothing things over with the patients he dealt with.
The next few hours passed with minor
emergencies, some of which could have waited till morning when the doctors’
offices opened, but some that did need to be tended to now.
She had just finished cleaning up the
paraphernalia from the doctor and herself stitching a little boy’s cheek up
where he had busted it open along his bed frame somehow. The parents had been nearly panicked from
the blood. It was not a big cut, but it
was on the face and bled quite a bit.
Within seconds, she was being demanded
in trauma. She knew from the orders
being barked out that it was a police officer and the suspect that had been
being pursued. She shook her head. She was heading into the room where the
officer was because that is where she was being demanded by THE doctor
himself. Dr. Tamio was getting on her
nerves tonight. Oh well, she only had
about 4 more hours of her 12 hour shift.
She could make that. No big
deal.
When they began to remove the shirt
and clean up the wound, it turned out to be a simple bullet wound. It missed organs and bone. Just hitting the flesh of the shoulder. The bullet did have to be removed
though.
The doctor extracted it quickly, and
she began to pack the wound, preparing it for the stitches.
When he was resting comfortably,
Kagome slipped into the waiting room and summoned the detective’s partner, or
whatever his rank was. The guy had been
in plain clothes. She knew that for
sure… She saw him pacing and watching out the tall windows.
Stepping close, she drew his attention
with a polite and soft, “Excuse me, sir.
The doctor is ready to see you.”
With a quick bow, she guided the guy’s partner into the room to the doctor
swiftly.
The doctor grunted and nodded before
exiting quickly. Kagome sighed and
rolled her eyes. “Your partner is
fine. It was not a serious wound. He has had stitches and will remain here for
the rest of the night. He will be
released tomorrow providing there are no complications. I will find out the status of the suspect if
you need me too,” she said helpfully.
“Thank
you,” came the tall officer’s reply finally.
Kagome felt a strange but small sense
of dejàvu at the man’s voice but shook it off.
“No
problem. Let me know if there is
anything that I can do to help you,” she offered lightly. “I am Nurse Higurashi Kagome.” She faintly indicated her name tag.
The man’s eyes narrowed a bit, but he
gave no other response.
Kagome took this as the end of the
conversation for now and began to head to the ER office area to finish up her
paper work for tonight. She had enough
and figured that she would get going so she could get off on time.
The other doctor had been the one to
talk to the officer in the waiting room when he finished with his suspect. He had apparently been unable to save
him. Whoever had fired on him had been
a good shot, but they didn’t find the damaged artery fast enough to save him.
When her shift finally ended, Kagome
sighed and headed to the locker room where her belongings were. She quickly changed into her jeans and
shirt, tossing her scrubs into her backpack and extracted her mp3. She put in the ear pieces and turned it
on. She headed to the bus stop and took
a seat on the bench. She was going to
head to the bakery then home. A shower,
some food and some down time sounded good.
A hand on her shoulder made her
jump. Pressing pause on the device, she
turned while pulling the ear pieces out.
“May
I help you?” she asked somewhat shyly and uncertain. It was the detective from the waiting room.
“Don’t
you remember me?” he asked with a grin.
“I sure remember you. I never
forgot you in fact. How could I? I claimed you years ago even though you
never did leave mutt face to come to me.”
Kagome’s eyes widened and she took in
the face in more detail.
Sharp, piercing blue eyes. Check.
A cocky grin. Check.
Long, dark hair. Check.
Used the words Mutt Face around
her. Check.
“Koga???”
she gasped, perplexed.
“It’s
good to hear that you remember my name.
I missed hearing you say it,” he said smartly. Time had touched him kindly.
There were a few laugh lines around his eyes and some lines framing his
mouth, but other than those marks that showed the passage of time, he still
looked young and care free.
Kagome quickly jumped up and threw her
arms around his neck. “I can’t believe
that it’s you. How have you been
doing? The last time I saw you, you
were still convincing Ayame that you didn’t want to mate her, and I was still
watching you and Inu Yasha still fighting about me. And, I kept telling you that I wasn’t your woman.”
“Oh,
I remember, but I still say that you are my woman. Ayame actually ended up mating one of the younger wolves from my
tribe. I haven’t heard from her in a
few centuries actually. She was a sweet
kid. Cute too.”
Kagome was burning to ask about
everybody else. She had to know.
“Would
you like to get some coffee and something to eat,” Koga brilliantly asked,
already escorting her toward where he was parked.
Kagome thought that maybe she should protest
because she was tired but then decided that she had to know the answers to her
questions. “Sure, but we can get it to
go. I would prefer to eat at my place.”
Koga grinned widely. “That sounds like a great idea. Besides, I want to know where you have been
hiding all this time.”
Kagome sighed at that. He still didn’t know too much about her, but
he was such a refreshing face to see.
