On the other side of the onsen, stretching her arms just above the water,
Sango muttered, "I must have thrown Hiroseki at least sixty times today.
Over three hundred minor demons protecting their mistress, and she 'happens'
to be able to be able to revive them 'constantly' because of a shard small
enough to fit in my fingernail..how can someone be able to even 'see' a
shard that small, much less use it like that?"
Shrugging, Kagome twisted her legs under the water, trying to loosen
her stressed muscles. "I don't know, all we do is collect more and more.
Sango-chan, how many shards can a single, 'small' jewel break into, anyway?
It feels like we've had to get over thirty in the past 'month'!"
Interlacing her fingers together, the older girl pushed her arms forward,
audable snaps sounding out, making both girls wince. Pulling her hands
back with a pained grimace, Sangol grumbled, "A grand total of thirty-seven
in three weeks, none bigger than a newly born moth. Wonder why it's only
'now' that these shards have appeared. Naraku 'alone' should be enough
to keep these demons scared and hiding. Nothing's changed in the past few
weeks as far as we know."
Almost drooping lower into the hot springs from depression, the school
girl shook her head. "It's insane, as if every youkai with a drive to gain
more power thinks that now is the 'perfect' opportunity to get some of
it. The fact that so many of their shards are small just adds to the weirdness.
As if the jewel is being broken into even 'smaller' pieces..why does it
seem like the only demon who feels the power of the shard isn't worth the
trouble is Sesshomaru?"
Chuckling a little, Sango shot out humorlessly, "He isn't the only one
in Japan, just the only one we know that says it openly. Maybe 'all' the
inu-youkai think that. Than there are the demons that have doubtlessly
lived for thousands of years, and those that hold their own 'provinces',
much like daimyo, who we've yet to hear 'rumors' of actively hunting the
jewel. The shard hunters are either ambitious lower class rabble, or in
charge of a relatively small clan like Koga."
Almost whining, the younger girl mumbled, "Why does Inuyasha have to
turn into a complete child whenever Koga just 'happens' to show up anyway?
Like it's 'my' fault a self-important demon thinks I'm 'his woman'?! You'd
think that they'd both get a clue that since I do 'not' hang out near the
ookami's home, and that I continually have to tell Koga 'not' to try getting
me to join his group, I officially am 'not' anyone's woman."
The demon slayer let herself smirk lightly. "Well, if nothing else,
it's amusing seeing how different Inuyasha acts when he thinks you might
go to another man. I never knew anyone else who can act so protective at
one moment, and when the 'danger' is over, act like the girl is a chore
to deal with..besides, you have to admit when Inuyasha gets competitive,
that means he'll fight doubly hard. Hence, his attitude can give 'us' less
work on these shard hunts, wouldn't you agree? And in the rare instance
where Koga and his clan aid us, I can't deny the urge to hold back and
watch what could have been an all day battle turn into a few minute scuffle!"
Kagome snorted in annoyance. "Personally, I think it's frustrating.
Like Inuyasha can't fight like that 'all' the time, and if Koga 'loves'
me so much, why not have a few ookami follow us? After all, with the amount
he insults Inuyasha's fighting abilities, it would stand to reason he'd
have his more 'trusted' fighters stick with us."
Nodding, Sango commented, "Maybe he thinks they'd fall for you as well,
or he only trusts his own, shard enhanced power. Makes me wonder what he
did before he gained those two in the legs."
Mustering a weak smile, the school girl looked at her reflection in
the steamy waters. "What is it that makes every immature guy we meet think
I'm 'possibly' interested in them, anyway? Do I really seem shallow enough
to fall for just any guy with some sort of power?"
"Part of it might be your kindness, Kagome-chan. It's rare these days,
and those few who act kind to anyone are normally either nieve, or prejudice
against something. Since you're neither, it sparks interest. And to Inuyasha
and Koga, interest means they want to claim your as their property..at
least Inuyasha isn't as open about it, eh?"
Taking a glance at Sango, she noted, "You know, it's strange. The only
guy I know who shows affection for you is Miroku, when I'd say you're the
more 'interesting' of the two of us."
The demon slayer's head shot up, and she was clearly trying to not seem
'too' interested in what that meant. "Well, maybe because you're from a
different sort of place than this. I'm not exactly as feminine as you are."
Playfully, Kagome shot back, "Oh for god sakes, there's no doubt you're
feminine. All someone has to do is look at that chest of yours!"
Sango quickly glanced at her breasts, then managed to stutter, "Wha..what?!"
Kagome chuckled. Oh, it was sometimes just too easy to get her flustered.
"Where I'm from, breasts are part of a woman most guys try to measure up
before dating her. With yours the size that they are, I'm surprised you
aren't chased every time we enter a village by every man who has a penis!"
Blush building on her face, the older girl looked down at her breasts
and muttered, "Who cares about someone's chest? Mine doesn't seem all that
special."
Kagome had to hold herself back from laughing like a maniac. "They're
'perfect'! I wish mine were that well proportioned! Definitely eye catching
curves. Next time I go home, I think I need to get you a bra or something.
Maybe the reason Miroku goes after your butt so much is because what he
'really' wants is too large to hold in his hands?!"
Shaking her head, trying to stop blushing, Sango asked, "What about
my abilities, my skills? Most men would think it unladylike to be this
strong, or be able to kill lower demons like they were nothing. Isn't it
a blow to their pride that a woman can be just as good, if not better than
them?"
Kagome raised an eyebrow, all humor gone. That sounded vaguely like
an insult to her 'own' abilities. "Like I can't? One arrow, and they turn
to a pile of melted skin, bone, and blood. Miko powers, and all that. Canceling
the most dangerous attacks before they arrive, like Kagura's windblades,
is not something just 'any' girl can do. It should scare every guy that
I could possibly disintegrate something five times larger than them completely
with a little stick."
The older girl whispered softly, "It's..not the same."
Kagome tilted her head, curious what she meant. "Oh, how?"
Sango's face turned forlorn. "My entire life has revolved around conflict.
Trust me, I can be a real bitch."
Unthinkingly, Kagome retorted. "Anyone can act like a bitch. Sometimes
the most feminine person can act like a street thug, it all depends on
the circomstances."
Sango stared at the younger girl, eyes glimmering strangly. "Still not
the same, but nice try. I've dueled with samurai, slaughtered demons, competed
with my comrades in my old village, and used to get into penty of brawls
just to have 'fun'. I know you help a lot with your bow and arrows, but
you just don't look like you've ever 'had' experience fighting."
The school girl couldn't help but giggle. "Sango-chan, I 'have'! Sure,
none of them were life-threatening, but I still used to be a tomboy. Last
one I had was..three months before I first met Inuyasha. I get the feeling
that if I didn't feel like danger was a constant, I'd act even 'more' confrontational
with him!"
Twitching, the older girl snidely commented, "I doubt that. As it is,
you two argue almost every time you talk. Kagome-chan, there's a difference
between a verbal argument, and a physical one. Now, I'll conceed that you're
not like some of the mindless villagers we've met. However, you can't say
you've been through fights like I have when your home is in peace. You
weren't raised in a chaotic -"
Something snapped in Kagome's mind, making her explode with fury. Snarling,
she spat out, "Look, I keep things to myself as well, Sango. You're not
the only girl who's got less than pleasant memories!"
Sango visably jolted at the outburst, blinking in confusion. The younger
girl continued hotly, "Nobody has a perfect life, 'everyone' has had some
harsh things happen. If you think just because I act 'kind' when we enter
new villages means that I've always been like this, THINK AGAIN!"
Recovering from her shock, the demon slayer roared harshly, "YOU'VE
NEVER FELT A LIFE FADE IN YOUR HANDS, NEVER DEALT WITH THE DAY TO DAY INJUSTICES
AROUND HERE, KAGOME-TEME!"
Kagome gasped, her stomach twinging from hurt. 'Kagome-teme'? That was
an open insult, calling her a 'bastard'! Depression was soon replaced with
more anger, and she retaliated. "DON'T GIVE ME THAT LOAD OF CRAP, YOU AREN'T
OPPRESSED OR A REGRET FILLED MURDERER! YOU'RE JUST -"
Voice shrill, the older girl yelled, "SHUT UP!"
The silence that followed Sango's scream was deafening. For half a second,
Kagome wondered why no one was coming to see why the girls were screaching
at eachother. Then she remembered that the two were, in essance, alone.
Inuyasha was scouting the local area for demons, Miroku was out-cold from
exhaustion, and Shippo was busy playing with Kirara. There was nothing
to stop them should this get even 'more' out of hand.
Breathing hoarsly, Sango growled, "You don't want to finish that sentence.
Trust me, that would be hazardous to your health. Besides, you're not a
some beacon of virtue. Despite everything I know about you, there's always
this small incling that you're an attention starved 'slut'."
Kagome recoiled as if she was slapped. Feeling her eyes become moist,
she splashed the onsen water into the demon slayer's face, delighting in
the other girl's sputtering protests. "'Attention starved slut'? If this
has to do with my school uniform, then you're a damn hypocrite! Ever noticed
your 'armor' is skin tight? It doesn't take much imagination to see what's
underneath 'that'. Why bother hitting Miroku every time he gropes you,
when you wear something so 'clearly' revealing that someone can tell if
your 'nipples' are hard or not?!"
Steaming water came at her in multiple waves, nearly drowning the school
girl. Pushing water without looking, feeling her eyes start to sting, she
heard Sango's sharp tongue return, "At least I don't let total strangers
see the skin of my thighs! It's like you 'want' some drunken fool to walk
up and shove his dick--"
Standing up to avoid breathing water, Kagome huffed. "You 'would' know
where to shove a dick with 'your' experience. Was part of your training
having your virginity taken, or was it rammed up your butt? Maybe that's
why you're so touchy when Miroku grabs your ass, it's where you've always
had men shove their--"
Without any warning, Sango shot to her feet and slapped the younger
girl across the cheek. The demon slayer's eyes widened in delayed relization,
and she almost mutely asked, "Are you alright, Kagome-teme?"
Both girls covered their mouths, each just as disbeleiving. 'Teme'?
What happened to 'chan'? The unexpected standoff ended, however, when Kagome's
surprise was replaced with rage. Walking up to the older girl with a fierce
glare, ignoring the fact that she was at least two inches shorter, the
school girl breathed out threateningly, "You'd better leave before I do
something we'll both regret."
For a moment, Sango looked like she might say something aggressive in
response to that. She seemed to think better of it, though, slowly walking
towards her clothes before mumbling, "I didn't mean to hit you."
Feeling some of her own anger disipate, the school girl returned, "I
know, but..neither of us are thinking straight right now. We just might
get into a pointless brawl, and I don't want to hurt you."
The demon slayer's look of humor at that statement only made Kagome's
anger rise again. She 'could' hurt Sango if push came to shove! Why didn't
she have a little more respect, she'd earned it with all the near-death
experiences! No more words were exchanged as the older girl dried off,
got dressed, and walked away. Somehow, that made the miko feel even more
insulted.
Sango sat on the ground, petting Kirara. Sleep was never going to come,
all because of a stupid little argument with Kagome.
The conversation had started innocently enough. First they were talking
about the seemingly endless number of shards. How it was getting ridiculous
that a jewel so small could shatter into so many little pieces. That the
shards they did gain were almost always smaller than the last, and near
impossible to get. And somehow, it led to Koga being attracted to Kagome.
Still innocent, and yet..even then there seemed to be a subtle tension.
After that it just continued going out of control. Sango regretted some
of her words, wishing that she could take them back. Kagome wasn't a coward
that used a bow and who starved for attention, a blind man could see that.
But Kagome's words had just pushed Sango to the limit. Degrading her armor
because of its 'tight' nature? Ha, that 'ditz' had to be joking, that armor
had more freedom of movement than anything else ever made in Japan, and
the protective qualities were only second to Inuyasha's fire-rat hakima.
Wait..did she just refer to Kagome in her mind as a 'ditz'?
It was nerve rattling for Sango. She'd been taught by her father that
demon tricks and physical battles were the only things that could make
someone hurt. Yet the feelings from that verbal fight left her far more
drained than any of the exercises from her childhood. Why, why was she
letting something so..meaningless effect her like this? Sango 'still' felt
some of the anger, 'still' felt like slapping the teeth out of Kagome's
mouth.
Scratching behind Kirara's ears, Sango asked, "What happened? Kagome-te..Kagome-chan,
was like a sister to me. How did a regular bath turn into..that? We've
had our share of stressful days and hard times, yet there was always this
little pattern, a rutine. Kagome and Inuyasha argue, and she sends him
to the dirt. Miroku tries to feel me up and I slap him silly. We both joke
with eachother about it afterwards, give eachother advise, and even let
ourselves cry on the other's shoulder! What made it all change into this?!"
She saw someone walk towards her with the corner of her eye, and sighed.
Only one person wore such strange garments..the one person she was not
ready to see yet.
Kagome sat down next to her, entire body seeming tense with nervousness,
"Can we talk, Sango?"
The demon slayer half heartedly smiled. "We're talking right now, Kagome."
She didn't mention the fact that the usual friendly endearments were
noticably gone. Especially after she had called the other girl 'Kagome-teme'.
A bastard. Another stupid thing done in the heat of the moment. There was
no humor in the schoolgirl's eyes after the poorly attempted joke. Oh well,
it 'was' a little too soon for the wounds to heal. She lightly gestured
at Kirara, and Sango got the picture.Gently poking the neko-youkai, taking
only a few seconds to watch as her small companion nodded in understanding
and dashed off, she turned to face Kagome.
Kagome broke the silence first with a sigh. "It could have happened
at any time. Two teenage girls, constant stress, and we just..vented out
our aggravations on the nearest person."
Sango shook her head, resisting the urge to sigh herself. Trying to
rationalize it like that was a good try, but.. "It isn't that simple, Kagome.
We've gone through more stressful situations, and we vented out on the
boys, not eachother! Things just spiraled out of control for who knows
why."
Staring into the demon slayers eyes sadly, Kagome muttered, "If you
hadn't left the onsen right then, I think I might have grabbed you by the
hair and thrown you on one of the sharper rocks! Do you..have any idea
why we were so out of it if it wasn't stress?"
For half a second, she was tempted to say something like, "You couldn't
throw me if you tried! You can barely lift a bag!" or, "My training would
prevent such a childish attack from finishing. Before your fingers could
grasp my hair, I'd snap them like twigs.", or even, "Well, you seem to
take pleasure in making Inuyasha ram into the ground. Why else would you
continually yell 'uswari'?" All of these responses seemed far too..confrontational.
Why was she even concidering them? Why did the thought of getting into
a fight seem so appealing right now?
Looking at the sky, Sango mumbled, "How was this even possible? We were
like close siblings! Always talking about how the boys were kind of stupid,
how the village girls acted nieve, made fun of what few 'noble' girls we've
seen..remember the time that we got a shard from an Uesugi retainer?"
Giggling lightly from the memory, Kagome whispered, "Yeah. We'd joked
about how the daughter was acting so high and mighty, and how she might
make a good wife with 'Sesshomaru'. Then the mother had so much make-up
on in an attempt to hide a small wrinkle that she looked like a demoness
who's human skin was loose and ready to be taken off at any moment..yeah,
we 'are' like siblings. Even close siblings fight more often than mortal
enemies."
Raising her head up sharply, Sango growled indignantly. "Kohaku and
I never fought when we were growing up!"
Kagome flinched, quickly waving her hands as if to blow away some unseen
mist. "Sorry, shouldn't have said that!"
The reaction only made Sango feel more irritated. "Don't patronize me,
Kagome-san! You meant something! What, do you and 'your' brother fight
often?"
Gulping at the tone and '-san', Kagome nodded hesitatingly.
The demon slayer continued her aggrivated rant. "And would you say that
you and your brother are a little distant 'because' of that?"
Sango saw something flash in the schoolgirl's eyes. All of her momentum
went out from under her, and the older girl looked at a now shuddering
Kagome, her eyes hidden under her hair. When Sango saw the miko's entire
face again, it felt like a blow to her lungs, knocking the air out of her.
Her teeth were bared and gritting in fury, her lower lip trembling, and
her upper lip stiff as a board. Her hands were in the grass, clenching
and unclenching multiple times, tearing dirt and plants both in her building
anger, her eyes glinting like a demon's blood-rage. Hell, she could swear
that Kagome's eyes were turning red!
The younger girl eventually spoke, voice filled with venom. "How 'dare'
you? I make a comment in passing, which meant nothing at all, and you insult
'my' relationship with Souta?"
She then started to advance on all fours, looking at the demon slayer
like she was the murderer of her children. Sango inched her way back, feeling
more fear than in any of her past battles. Kagome didn't look this emotional
even when Inuyasha was at his worst! Who knew what she'd do in this frame
of mind? Or what she might concider doing?!
Soon, there was nowhere left to retreat. She was now caught between
Kagome and something hard..most likely a tree. Putting her hands on the
tree behind her and trying to brace herself, the older girl watched as
Kagome slowly came closer and closer. Her hands seemed to stomp on the
dirt with every step. She then shoved her face into Sango's, their noses
touching, Kagome's harsh breathing making the older girl shake in aprehension,
and she shut her eyes, expecting a physical assault. The breathing slowly
became more relaxed, but the firmness of the nose against her's stayed
constant. For a moment, Sango thought the younger girl had noticed that
this was flying out of control again. For a moment, she thought it was
safe to relax and open her eyes. That moment didn't last.
The instant she opened her eyes, Kagome slammed an open hand next to
her head. Jarred, Sango wacked the back of her head on the tree, and heard
a scream of, "SANGO-NO-BAKA!"
The scream echoed in the air, feeling far worse than any broken bone
that Sango had received in her life. Feeling tears build in her own eyes,
she tried to say 'forgive me', but no sound came out. If it was because
of surprise, guilt, or because the headblow had done some serious damage,
she couldn't tell.
Kagome slowly started to stand up, panting. When she got on her feet,
seemingly confident that she wouldn't fall down, she snarled hoarsely.
"Sango-no-baka, our friendship is officially over. I swear that the next
time you so much as try to come near me..I'll tear your eyes out of your
broken body."
Sango didn't beleive it, though. "You might have hurt your hand..I'll
get some banda--"
"DON'T YOU TOUCH ME!" The schoolgirl visably recoiled at the mere idea
of help from 'her', roaring in outrage.
And just like that, Sango felt the tears come down. Kagome either didn't
notice or didn't care. "Get your things, and go home."
The demon slayer couldn't think of anything coherent. Stuttering, she
tried to say that she had nowhere to go. Yet all that came out was, "But...wha...please,
Kag-me-cha...I..."
No compassion or regret crossed Kagome's features. If anything, her
expression turned from cold to demented, and her tone went from venomous
to taunting. "That's right, you don't HAVE a home anymore. You don't have
a FAMILY, for that matter. And you dare say the way I interact with MY
BROTHER would cause a 'rift' between 'us'?! I would say you should just
care for your own..but there's nobody left 'alive' other than Kohaku, Naraku's
little errand boy."
Still shell-shocked, Sango didn't react when the angry schoolgirl placed
a foot on her chest, or when she started adding pressure, slowly shoving
Sango more deeply into the tree behind her. Dull pains started to lightly
itch at her mind, wood digging through her youta. They weren't harsh enough
to pierce the skin or cloth, just enough to remind her that the world wasn't
literally crumbling around her. The sole of Kagome's shoe shifted around,
as if the younger girl was trying to crush her breasts. Then Kagome pulled
the foot back and slammed it right at the mud stained shoe-print, making
the demon slayer groan as her melons crashed into her ribs. Putting a hand
across her chest in both disbeleif and protection, Sango lightly massaged
her slightly tender skin through the now dirty youta.
Kagome's breathing became unsteady again. The younger girl fell to her
knees, breaking down completely. "Do you know what it's like? Constantly
breaking promises with Souta in an attempt to regain shards of the jewel?
Finding out that he's got a girlfriend, and has just recently started to
struggle with puberty? Seeing my grandfather try to make me feel better
with his antics, and then find out he's almost unable to walk two miles
without sitting down to catch his breath? Finding out the reason my mom's
starting to smile despite everything is because she found a boyfriend?
My little brother's growing up, my grandfather is starting to show the
signs of old age, and my mother..is starting to date again. I've missed
so many things that my family has done, and haven't been able to be with
them for more than a few days at a time because of this stupid jewel! Do
you realize how much I sacrifice by coming down the well, leaving them
to wonder if I'll die?! Of COURSE you don't! YOU DON'T KNOW THE SACRIFICES
I MAKE EVERY DAY I DECIDE TO DO THIS! MY FAMILY, DESPITE THEIR FACADES,
ARE BEING TORTURED EVERY DAY I'M HERE IN POTENTIAL DANGER!"
Something gave way right there. Something that made Sango push herself
away from the tree, get on her knees, and crawl to Kagome. Forcing the
younger girl to look her in the face with a firm grip on her jaw, ignoring
Kagome's gasp of surprise, she snarled in indignation, "You have a lot
of nerve, Kagome. You honestly think you can even QUALIFY for 'PITY'? The
only reason it feels like you're losing a lot is because you have so much
in the FIRST PLACE! I can understand being angry with me for insulting
your relationship with your brother, that was uncalled for. I can understand
wanting to lash out at me, I deserved it. But you crossed a line when you
wallowed in self pity and said 'you don't know this pain'. Of COURSE I
don't! I'll never know that pain! My FATHER is dead, my BROTHER is Naraku's
SLAVE, and you have the NERVE to act like YOU have PROBLEMS?! I wonder
how some of the people who look 'up' to you, like Shippo for example, would
feel if you said that idiocy when he was in hearing range? He'd probably
grab you by the hair and ask where the 'real' Kagome-chan was!"
Kagome looked at the dirt, whispering something inaudible. Clearly striking
a nerve, Sango flicked at the tears on her face, and had a sadistic idea.
An idea that made her 'almost' smile. It was time to use her sarcasm for
something useful, something painful. "I may not be qualified to say this,
but congratulations Kagome! You've not only proved that you're not Kikyo,
you've ALSO proved why you wear such impractical clothing!"
The look of pained curiosity Kagome gave her almost caused her to start
laughing. Holding it in as best she could, Sango kept her voice steady
as she finished. "I mean, who would ever think that the REPLACEMENT for
a RESPECTED miko would be a total, self-centered SLUT?!"
Before Sango could begin to giggle like the maniac she was starting
to feel like, she was taken by surprise. Easily recognizable signs reminded
her of every time she'd ever done something similar. A loud cracking sound
as her left cheek was hit, and a delayed feeling of pain. She had 'just'
been 'slapped'! Slowly moving her head back into its origional position,
Sango tried to stare at Kagome right in the eyes, not allowing her to see
how much that hit had actually hurt. Still a little dazed from the unexpected
hit to the face, she hadn't registered when both of Kagome's hands drew
back, clenched. Before the demon slayer could react, the hands shot out
towards her chest and gave a half shove, half hammer-punch, slamming into
Sango's still sore breasts. She fell flat on her ass, hands moving to protect
her tits. Her mind was racing, but nothing really coherent went through
it. Mostly just the fact that her breasts hurt 'again' from rough contact,
and she didn't believe that Kagome just 'did' that.
Kagome jumped up, started to walk away, and yelled, "AT LEAST I DON'T
WEAR A SKIN TIGHT SUIT UNDER THE GUISE OF ARMOR, BIMBO!"
Jumping to her feet, Sango tackled her, catching the younger girl in
the gut. The pair rolled around punching one another for what felt like
hours, neither doing much damage because of their proximity. The demon
slayer didn't care that she was being irrational, that she wasn't even
trying to cause pain in a fight, she just wanted to let her emotions out
for the first time in an eternity. All the anger, frustration, confusion,
it was rushing to the front as the two girls fought, neither with the upper
hand. As if she felt she was going to lose, Kagome slammed the older girl's
head into a nearby rock, and used the moment of shocked pain to escape.
Sango wasn't about to let her get away so easily, dashing off after
the escaping miko. Moving her long legs as fast as she could, the only
thought that went through her head was to catch that slut. The sound of
tearing cloth filled the air, but she didn't stop to wonder why. Seeing
the object of her rage clearly moving faster made her push herself even
harder. 'Bimbo'? Nobody called her 'bimbo', and that slut wasn't about
to get away with it.
After what felt like hours, Sango started to lose some of her fire.
How was Kagome keeping that pace up? And why couldn't she catch up?! Wait,
she was wearing her sandles? Those weren't designed for speed! The fire
in her blood completely drained when she tripped, falling down on her face.
Grimacing, Sango looked at her feet, ready to tear whatever root she'd
tripped over from the ground and throw it in frustration. What she caused
her eyes to widen. Her youta had been torn at the legs when she had been
running. 'Kagome' had 'made' her 'ruin' the closest thing to a 'kimono'
she ever had in her 'life'!
She sighed, stood up sullenly, and walked back in the general direction
of the camp. The damage was light, and she could possibly convince the
boys she wanted to change her look slightly. All she needed was a blade
to cut off some of the hanging bits, even the rest of it out, and she'd
still have enough to cover her knees when she walked.
For a moment, Sango imagined slamming her boomerang into Kagome's head
in the morning, or bashing her with the flat side of her katana in the
tits to make things a little more even. An amusing thought..Kagome would
be all hers to punish, in any possible way she wanted. Oh, that stupid
brat would be in so much pain that her ANCESTORS, much less her DESCENDANTS,
would feel it.
Sango didn't realize when Kirara came back to her side until she felt
fur rub her leg. She than picked up the small neko and lightly pecked the
feline's forehead with a kiss.
Looking at Kirara's curious eyes, she smiled saddly and muttered, "Well,
partner..did you hear what just happened?"
Kirara nodded, and then began licking Sango's fingers, something the
demon slayer knew was an attempt to be soothing. Shaking her head lightly,
Sango asked, "What should I do, girl? I know what I said was out of line,
but..one thing had led to another and it just..happened! We go from best
of friends to antagonizing eachother unintentionally in less than a single
day..how should I deal with this?"
The cat stopped licking, and stared Sango in the face again.
The eighteen-year-old sat on the ground, and started to pet the small
cat. "It's just not something I'm used to. Since when did my emotions send
me into random directions like this? There's usually some sort of logic
behind it. From the sympathy for Miroku, which sometimes makes me blush
when I think of how I could..comfort him, to the respect I have for Inuyasha,
and envying his sheer strength. Yet Kagome has always been difficult for
me to pinpoint. What she was to me before seemed to fluctuate even when
we were still friends! Companion, sister, annoyingly perceptive, innocent,
she never seemed to stay in a category for long. She's always been unpredictable,
how can I deal with her?"
If she'd been in her normal frame of mind, Sango would have noticed
Kirara flinch at her words describing Kagome and wondered why. Thinking
hard on other things, the demon slayer then got an idea. "Hey, maybe I
could do a few..mild pranks on her. Things like pour her hair care products
in the trees, or hide her comb. Maybe even steal her soaps..yes, such things
not only would infuriate her, they would also be thought of as minor to
the others. The boys will think it as small, Kagome won't be able to strike
back. Yes, this may even be fun! Just the IDEA of making that brat go crazy
is getting my blood pumping already!"
Chuckling darkly, Sango didn't notice Kirara looking at the sky and
shaking her head. She also didn't notice how the neko's tails seemed to
droop, or the sound of feet cracking branches.
Inuyasha gulped, feeling the tension in the air. Miroku had left earlier
to check and see if this was another wild goose chase. Maybe the damn monk
didn't want to deal with two pissed girls ready to explode. Even Shippo
kept his silence in fear. The only sounds that filled the air were slight
guttural noises and the quiet crushing of teeth and food. Feeling the urge
to gulp again, the half demon wondered what the hell could have happened
last night. He was gone from camp for a small while to work off some left-over
Koga-induced annoyance, and the girls go CRAZY?!
Sango was the image of..well, not her usual self, that was for sure.
Eating each bit of food with slow, controlled chomps, she didn't even look
at Kirara. The small cat looked sullen under the demon-slayer's hands,
the scratches across the demon's back and head slow and seemed a little
harsher than her normal rutine. As for the so called 'new look', her youta
was shortened to right above the knees. Small strands of cloth hung at
her sides, as if she didn't use scissors to do what could have been actually
a good idea. Like she'd taken a knife and sliced at the garment repeatedly,
wanting it to bleed. Strange, why not ask Kagome for scissors? Even stranger
was the sign of bruising at the side of her head. It looked like a rock
hit her, but..that would have to be the force of someone falling, and Sango
wasn't that clumsy.
Kagome, on the other hand, looked ragged and wild. Her usually combed
and conditioned hair was as tangled and messy as when she woke up, some
of the strands hanging across her face and cheeks. Shoving food in her
mouth and chomping down hard, she never flinched as random pieces drooled
down her mouth and dropped down on her skirt and legs. Her blouse looked
hastily buttoned, and remained untucked, like she was doing things mindlessly,
and couldn't see how different it looked from her usual rutine. Even her
eyes looked different than before. If Inuyasha didn't know better, he'd
say it looked like each eyeball was a portal to hell itself! There was
much rage in them..and it seemed to flare up every time she looked at the
other girl.
Why would she be angry at the demon slayer in the first place? Then
again, Sango did seem to be enjoying her poor mood, and had clearly taken
some frustrations out on her own clothes. Yet it just didn't make sense!
He couldn't remember a single time the pair had even had a minor disagreement,
and now they seemed to be fighting? Fighting hard enough that the tension
was almost solid enough to write with in the air? With their tempers, no
matter how much they might try to control them, that tension might just
blow up violently.
Sango broke the silence with clearly feigned concern. "Kagome-chan,
you look like you had a rough sleep! Is there some reason why you've forgotten
how to dress yourself?"
Not even slowing down eating, Kagome glanced down a moment at her clothes
and shrugged the question off. Huh, last time she had her clothes unkept
in the morning, she had stared at Inuyasha blushing, and smelled like she'd
had..erotic dreams. And even then, they hadn't looked this bad. And not
batting an eye at an open insult?
Twitching from lack of response, Sango continued, "And what did you
do with your hair? Let a pair of mice fight in it, and leave the battle-field
undisturbed?"
Time seemed to stop when Kagome looked up, and not even the birds or
bugs made a sound. Kagome stopped eating, and Inuyasha felt his necklace
become heavier. Like the small object on his neck, connected to when she
said that stupid word, was afraid. Arms twitching every few seconds, one
could almost see her imagine stabbing an arrow through Sango's tongue.
Inuyasha noticed a familiar, and 'very' unwelcome change. Kagome began
to smile far too sweetly, eyes shut in her all-too-innocent grin. Normally,
this would mean she'd send him to the dirt over twelve times..
"Sango-chan, what gave you the idea of altering your youta? If you'd
asked, I'd have gladly let you borrow one of my skirts."
Sango's hands clenched, but she didn't stop her amused smirk. She just
'calmly' shot back, "Oh, I just didn't think I wanted to show so much skin.
Some of us have different ideas of modesty."
Yesh, these girls were seriously pissed at eachother. If this went on
much longer, blood would start to slap the ground..probably as hands slapped
mouths.
Still smiling, Kagome shot back, "Well, I have to say that your talent
is clearly buchery. Or did you let Kirara do the alteration?"
If looks could kill, Sango would have left the miko bleeding slowly
in agony. Inuyasha stopped eating all together, his heart stopped beating,
and he stopped hearing Shippo's steady breaths. Oh god, this wasn't going
to end well. Whatever god was up there right now, please stop them from
tearing into eachother. He wouldn't be able to keep them separated, and
might get mauled in the crossfire! Sango was starting to put the plate
at her side..
"Is there some reason why it's so quiet here this morning?"
Inuyasha almost couldn't stop himself from muttering 'thank you, Miroku'.
Both girls slightly jumped from where they were sitting, and quickly turned
away from eachother, blushing. Sango brought the plate back in front of
herself, and began eating again. Inuyasha let himself breath normally.
Well, looks like that standoff was over. Hopefully, they wouldn't feel
the need to get into another one any time soon.
Sango quickly asked, "What did you find out about the shard, Houshi-sama?"
Miroku sat down with a strange look on his face. "I'm not entirely sure
there is a shard, but there are reports of a peculiar demon around here.
Mysterious, powerful, and able to hide in the shadows. I might have thought
it was Naraku, but the reports seemed too..strange. The creature apparently
moves from household to household, family to family, creating illusions
and chaos of varying kinds. Some of which involve people going into random
songs, and many other things that boggle the mind."
Inuyasha felt his blood run cold, staring at the two girls. Did that
demon effect them somehow, too? Hell, those two being so hostile with eachother
was more freaky than hearing Souta's 'pop-rock' tunes come from a small
little case!
Miroku continued, "The demon apparently isn't too subtle about who it
has effected. In fact, villagers who are infected end up with the kanji
'aku', evil person, on their forehead."
Damn, making the girls come to their senses wouldn't be as simple as
'kill that creature and the spell is broken'. Inuyasha held back an annoyed
growl, this was not the time for the girls to direct their wrath at eachother
with no apparent reason. They had more serious problems!
"The normal village, which I visited, and the 'asylum', are all that
lay in this area. A place where the ones affected by the demon are cut
off from the world, the asylum has been made difficult to enter or leave,
making it the most likely place the shard would be. Conventional means
of entry are impossible, so I asked the local miko to inform me of what
we'll deal with. We'll have to go through tests of some kind before we're
inside, but it shouldn't be too hard."
Inuyasha shook his head lightly. 'Not too hard'? It was NEVER simple.
Especially with two arguing girls. With their explosive tempers, it wouldn't
be surprising if they ended up tearing off eachother's clothes and started
insulting every small hair, scar, and anything else that was normally covered
by their garments..okay, that sounded strangely appealing. Maybe he'd been
around Miroku for too long..
The monk walked up to Inuyasha and poked him with his staff, whispering,
"What seems to be the situation with them? I've seen women scorned and
furious, but I've never seen females so openly hostile with eachother so
early in the morning."
Inuyasha looked at the pair again, and noted that they were glaring
at eachother again, still trying to act 'subtle'. "If you hadn't arrived
when you did, they'd probably have come to blows. Neither will be thinking
straight if we don't keep them separated."
Miroku then muttered something that made the half-demon pause. "Maybe
their anger could make the entire situation easier for us."
Shippo slowly inched towards the monk and asked, "How? It looks to me
like each of them wouldn't mind breaking the other's face. How could that
'help' anyone other than the random maniac trying to kill us?!"
"Them competing with eachother would add a certain fire to their actions.
And said passion could mean they will do certain things without question."
Inuyasha glared lightly. "What sort of things? Perverted, or actually
useful?"
"Oh, swim through this or walk on that. The obsticals to protect the
sheilded area are designed to push people's will power, not see if one
is strong enough or smart enough to get through. Just sheer willpower,
and spells expressly prevent demons to do a thing until the barrier is
taken down."
Miroku chuckled when he saw the half demon's disbeleif. "Those girls
are stubborn, unwilling to give up when they feel strong about something.
As much determination you have, wouldn't you say you'd be more motivated
if there was an internal need to prove supremacy over another? Like when
Koga's around? Look, just a nudge here and a prick there and this potentially
difficult situation can turn to our favor."
Shippo shook his head, and muttered, "I think all those headblows have
effected your brain at last."
Sorry it took so long to get this up, you'd be surprised how much trouble
it is getting a profile back when your e-mail is going insane. Anyway,
this is going to be fun..
