Broken Promises
Italics = character thoughts.Chapter 1Inuyasha bounded easily from tree to tree in the thickly overgrown forest, the branches forming an almost unbroken aerial path. Reverting to the old habit of hiding his trail by taking to the trees left his mind free. “Perhaps to free,” he muttered to himself trying to shrug off his melancholy as he paused on the limb of the last tree surrounding the grotto’s small clearing. Carefully scenting the air for any intruders, he squinted against the flood of afternoon sunlight gracing the grotto’s flower covered grass and sparkling brook. He dropped lightly to the forest floor, his senses telling him nothing larger than an ordinary bear had been in the area recently.
He slowly made his way around the grotto’s small perimeter, noting that the wards were only now starting to weaken after so many years of neglect. “It’s just another sign that I should stop going out of my way for that Baka.” He sighed, disgusted with himself. So what if I promised I would always be here at this time. That Baka doesn’t keep up his side of the promise why should I? It isn’t as if I need his protection now, everyone in my group already knows of my loss of demon power on the night of the new moon. Kicking a stone into the brook he sighed, tired of being alone. Does he even remember the promise? Or is he so filled with hate that it’s useless to try for peace between us again? He walked deeper into the empty grotto following the narrow stream of water to its source. The sound of water splashing over rocks led him directly to the small waterfall.
The light mist of water hovering around the waterfall caught the light from the setting sun and turned it into a cloud of sparkling golden orange. “It’s not like it’s easy to get away from the group either, especially Kagome.” He muttered to himself as he rubbed at the tight muscles in his lower back. That last ‘Sit!’ had really hurt, but at least Kagome had been mad enough with me to go back home to her own time saying something about exam something or other. I should have about three days, not that I’ll need them that Baka hasn’t shown up any of the other times I’ve been here. Though there’s nothing and no one to rush back to either.
Pushing aside some ivy covering the cliff’s base that the waterfall tumbled from, he entered the hidden cave. Dust covered the floor in an unbroken film and a spider had taken up residence in the cold stone hearth, its large web spanning the opening. The few pieces of furniture in the main cavern were just as he’d left them. Growling he went to retrieve the broom he’d left last time, his fingers itching to pull out Tetsusaiga. He felt his ears flatten to his head as Kagome’s voice nagged his thoughts, ‘You want to use Tetsusaiga on a spider? Talk about over kill Inuyasha.’ Frowning at the thought he set to work with just the broom. With one last sneeze he swept out the pile of dust and cobwebs from the cave just as the sun set. A cool breeze swirled around him as he leaned against the broom, the change coursed slowly through his body draining away his demon aura and leaving him an ordinary human, his long white hair turning black. Setting aside the broom, he quickly lit the old wood waiting in the fireplace cursing the loss of his demon sight in the gloom.Picking up a white cloth towel, he walked to the back of the cave where it branched off to a smaller cave that held a hot spring. Stripping down quickly he laid his sword near the spring, ignoring the dusty sword rack in the corner. Dipping out some of the heated water with a wooden pail, he washed the sweat and dust from his skin and hair, the rinse water being absorbed into the deep soft sand covering the floor. Once clean he entered the hot spring, sighing as the hot water eased the ache in his back and with a sigh his eyes drifted closed.
With one last powerful swipe of Tokijin, Sesshomaru severed the head of the zombie demon. The blade cutting loose a tainted purple shard of the Shikon Jewel, ending the undead life of the zombie beast as its body slowly disintegrated back into empty bones. Before the shard could land on the ground, one of Naraku’s Saimyoushou bugs darted out and snatched it up, quickly flying off into the night. “Still sending inferior ‘borei demons’ to fight your battles for you Naraku?” His soft voice asked the lingering darkness as he wiped the gore from his sword frowning at the sticky blood he could feel weighing down his long silver hair.
“Just a tidbit to keep you entertained Lord Sesshomaru,” Naraku’s disembodied voice purred back. “I wouldn’t want you to loose interest in me as I have certainly not lost interest in you. Too bad your answer about joining with me is still no.” Naraku’s voice faded as the miasma dissipated leaving the area and the stars reappeared in the night sky.
He looked around as he sheathed Tokijin, the battle having taken him far from Rin and Jaken. The area was vaguely familiar sparking the memory of a safe haven near by. Is it just a coincidence that he chose to bate me tonight? No, Naraku is a more cunning bastard than that. With a weary shrug, he set off thru the forest his steps following the path from his memories. The stars glittered on this moonless night, but their weak light wasn’t enough to penetrate the forest’s dark heart or illuminate the nonexistent path, but he remembered the way. Remembered the many times he had used the grotto in perfect safety. Remembered the last, the final lonely time he’d been there. Remembered also that there was only one person left alive who knew of the grotto and his secret both, “Inuyasha.”For some unknown reason his travels seemed to cross the half-breeds path more and more. It presented him with ample opportunity to rid himself of the nuisance only to be thwarted again and again by circumstance or honor, leaving Inuyasha alive. It wasn’t always one battle after another with him. The safe haven of the grotto is proof of that. But he was stupid and let a lowly human girl pin him to a tree for 50 years and then there’s the matter of Tetsusaiga.
Darting thru the forest, he soon came to the edge of the grotto’s clearing. Pausing against a tree, he waited for the slight tremble in his legs to steady. The quarterly cycle of hibernation was closing in on him fast. It was the only thing he’d inherited from his Youkai mother that was a curse to him. Using his demon senses was getting harder as sleep stole like a warm drug thru his system. Pounding his fist into the ruff bark of the tree a few times, he was able to drive back the lassitude with pain, his face never changing from its feel of cold emptiness despite the pain. The night wind ruffled the fur wrap gracing his shoulder as he crossed the grotto to the ivy covered cave entrance, pushing back the vines he paused in slight surprise as the light and warmth of the fireplace announced the presence of an interloper. Silently cursing the dulling of his youkai senses he strode thru the cave his eyes narrowing at the overwhelming scent of human that assaulted his nose. Following the sent to the back of the cave a low growl vibrated thru his chest at the sight of the person soaking in his hot springs.
**********Inuyasha’s eyes snapped open at the low growl echoing thru the chamber, shock coursing thru his body at the sight of his older brother. “Sesshomaru?”
“You do not belong here anymore Inuyasha, leave now or stay and die.” He’d forgotten how his brother looked and smelled as a human and even though his body was well developed, Inuyasha’s human strength was no match for his demon power. He dismissed him as a threat, knowing that with the loss of Inuyasha’s demon power he also lost the ability to transform Tetsusaiga.“Fuck you Sesshomaru! I was here first asshole, you leave.” He grabbed Tetsusaiga and leaping out of the hot spring faced his brother with his sword bare. Feh, he’s always threatening to kill me, the unfeeling Baka.
Looking at Inuyasha he felt a strange muscle in his cheek twitch as the half-breed arrogantly stood naked before his superior with a drawn sword.
Inuyasha paused stunned. Hold on a moment was that a smile? No, couldn’t have been this is Sesshomaru a rock has more facial expressions. He cocked his head, a strange noise seemed to be emanating from his brother. Now if I didn’t know better I’d swear he just laughed at me.
The strange feeling in his chest puzzled him as he watched the naked half-breed with narrowed eyes, it had been awhile but could this long forgotten feeling be laughter? What happened to all the hate the half-breed usually inspired in him? “As amusing as this is Baka, you try my patience. Why are you here Inuyasha?” He scowled at Inuyasha noticing his black hair clung to his wet skin as the sand soaked up the drops of water that rolled off the hard plains of his naked body. He watched the path of one sparkling drop travel the washboard abs before his brother’s insolent voice distracted him.
“Unlike you Sesshomaru, I remember my promises.” He threw one last glare at his brother and sheathing Tetsusaiga turned his back on him placing his sword in the old weapons rack. He casually sneered at Sesshomaru over his shoulder as he wrapped the drying towel around his waist. “Are you so dishonorable now that you would forget your vow so easily and would break your word and bring shame upon yourself by attacking me here, now?”
Enraged that his lowly half-breed brother would dare turn his back to him he darted over, slamming Inuyasha’s face against the back wall of the cavern. He pinned Inuyasha against the wall with his body, his lips brushing the pink curve of his human ear, “Dishonor? You, a weak half-breed, dares to school me on honor.”
He shivered at the feel of Sesshomaru’s warm lips and the soft brush of fur against his bare back. “Then tell me, Oh Lord of the Western Lands, what was the promise we made?” He grunted as his cheek was ground against the ruff stone wall his teeth cutting the inside of his cheek.
Sesshomaru growled at the disrespect in Inuyasha’s tone and spun him around slamming him back against the wall, his claws scratching his shoulder.Spitting blood from his mouth he watched as Sesshomaru paused, his brows slightly furrowed. A smirk graced his blood stained lips as Sesshomaru’s eyes widened before his bored emotionless mask slipped back into place.
Sesshomaru eased back but kept Inuyasha pined to the wall with his hand on his shoulder. The cur is ill mannered, crude, and the only one left alive who could have revealed my secret to Naraku, but if that was so, then why didn’t Naraku just wait it out. If the battle had lasted longer, I would have been easy to kill as the hibernation curse stole my consciousness. Was it all just a coincidence? And could Inuyasha truly still feel bound by a promise from so long ago? “It would seem I owe you an apology. I did not expect a weak half-breed to honor one promise between children, when you had run away from your other duties to your family.” He stepped back releasing Inuyasha from his hold, the strange feeling in his chest and cheek threatened to return at the comical look on Inuyasha’s face. “Unlike humans Inuyasha I can admit when I may have made an error, now close your mouth its most unappealing.” He walked over to the stone bench carved out of the wall of the cavern, carefully tugging the cords binding his armor. May as well make use of the spring, as the promise binds him from harming me as well at this time and in this place, though it seems he’s conveniently forgotten the 50 years he missed meeting me here because he was stupid enough to get himself pinned to a tree by a human girl.
“What are you doing!” Inuyasha clutched the towel tighter to his body, a blush heating his cheeks as he watched Sesshomaru awkwardly trying to remove his armor.
He looked up from the stubborn knot the fool Jaken had used to tie the cord on his armor. Is he blushing? Hmm this could be interesting, let’s see how far I can push his sense of honor. “What does it look like Baka? I wish to bathe, though you’ve made that a difficult task one-handed.” Giving up on the knot, he removed his two swords from his sash.
Weak half-breed! Muttering under his breath he glared at the sandy floor his cheeks burning as he wiped the blood from his lips. And what duties, to hold still long enough so he could kill me and take Tetsusaiga?
“What was that Inuyasha I couldn’t hear you?” He asked as he turned back to Inuyasha after placing both of his swords in the old weapons rack.
He tied the ends of the towel in a tighter knot around his waist and stomped over to his brother. “I said if wittle Sesshy-kun needs help all he has to do is say so.”
Sesshomaru let the taunt slide as the war of wills heated his tired blood. “So you finally accept your place Inuyasha? Then you may undress and bathe me.” He waited patiently for Inuyasha to grab his sword and attack or storm out of the room. He watched as Inuyasha lowered his head, hands clenched at his sides, his black bangs hiding his warm chocolate human eyes. Now he’ll run away and leave me in peace. He ground his teeth as he watched Sesshomaru thru the cover of his hair. The Baka has the nerve to sigh and stare at the wall. Well he’s not winning this round. Slowly he unclenched his fingers as his hands reached up to untie the knot in Sesshomaru’s armor, the soft gasp of surprise from his brother made him grin. Hah! Score two points for me. He felt Sesshomaru’s golden eyes staring at him as he worked the stubborn cord loose and tried to peel the armor from him.
He gently put his hand over Inuyasha’s hands, halting their soft tugging. “You need to untie the Heko Obi sash first Inuyasha.” He guided Inuyasha’s hands to the yellow and blue silk sash at his waist as he watched the nervous flutter of his brother’s Adams apple as he gulped audibly. Sesshomaru smirked, if this doesn’t make him run for his sword the half-breed may prove honorable after all, interesting. “The edge is tucked under the sash here.” Taking the fingers of Inuyasha’s left hand with his right he slid both of their hands under the band of the sash freeing the tucked end.
Inuyasha cursed under his breath as he felt the blush burning his cheeks spread to his chest. Stupid, it’s just Sesshomaru being his usual asshole self, it’s not as if he’s really flirting with me. He groaned squeezing his eyes shut his stomach flipping. Please tell me I did not just think that. The soft silk of the Heko Obi sash flowed thru his hands as he unwound it from his brother’s narrow waist.
“Please fold it Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru whispered.
His head snapped up, his eyes locking on Sesshomaru’s half lidded gaze. Did he just say please to me? He looked down surprised to find he’d already folded the silk sash while staring into his brother’s heavy lidded eyes. Must be his quarterly sleep cycle making him so… (His brain helpfully supplied a few choice words to end the thought… calm, docile, appealing, sultry, and erotic?) “What the fuck!” He blurted as he dropped the sash on the stone bench as if it had burned him.
“Must you yell so Inuyasha?” He winced as the lingering echoes further pulled him from the pleasant lassitude of his impending sleep cycle. May as well get this over with quickly. “Here, you need to untie the other cords at my side to remove the chest armor.” He tilted his head as he picked up a new subtle and enticing scent. Hmm, could it be coming from the hanyou? He lowered his head as Inuyasha came near him untying the side cords and breathed in his brother’s warm spicy scent.
Did he just sniff me? Inuyasha quickly moved away from Sesshomaru putting the armor on the bench with the sash. Well it’s just too bad if my human odor offends his aristocratic nose, he doesn’t have any room for complaint he’s the one with dried demon blood in his hair. With that thought, he automatically reached into a recess in the rock wall gathering up some of the shampoo stuff he’d gotten from Kagome. I wonder whose blood... A spark of concern flared briefly in his heart for his brother before he stamped it out. No I don’t, just get the asshole put to bed fast.
Sesshomaru sat on the stone bench removing his boots one-handed. Standing up he pulled loose the belt of the white hakama pants and shrugged out of the material, his robe and fur following. He looked up at Inuyasha’s cough. The hanyou seemed to be having difficulty looking at him. That’s right. Humans teach some stupid idea about the naked body being sinful. He watched as Inuyasha kept his eyes averted from him as he knelt to dip the bucket into the hot spring. He stared as Inuyasha’s back muscles flexed, the knot of the towel the only thing covering the lean honey colored length of that side of his body. Or, could it be the half-breed found him arousing? He shrugged to himself, having no problem with a male, even a family member, stirring his demon lust. But it’s Inuyasha and he’s fully human now, at least as a hanyou it wouldn’t be as distasteful. Frowning he grabbed a hold of that thought and shredded it. Sleep. I could really use some sleep. The blurred images of a childhood memory stirred briefly in his sleep-drugged mind, a puzzling image of Inuyasha’s golden tear-filled eyes.
He plunked the bucket at Sesshomaru’s feet dropping the sponge in with a splash. “There, enjoy.” He handed his brother the bottle of shampoo and turned to leave his eyes looking anywhere but at his pale lean body.
“To scared to finish Inuyasha?” He taunted as just the thought of trying to rinse the blood clotting his hair with one arm, and the elusive memory teasing him, fueled his frustration at his brother.Inuyasha stopped and slowly turned, the muscle in his jaw jumping, and without a word, he strode back and picked up the bucket. “Sit!” he growled pointing at the stone bench, visions of Sesshomaru wearing the subjugation beads Kagome and Kaede had cursed him with filled his thoughts.
He moved to the end of the stone bench away from his clothes, having some idea of what Inuyasha wanted. He sighed as his brother squeezed the sea sponge out over his head a couple of times, the warm water cascading down his hair and body as he tilted his head back closing his eyes.
With the bucket now only half-full he tipped the rest out over Sesshomaru’s head thoroughly soaking the long silver strands. After refilling the bucket from the spring, he grabbed the bottle of shampoo Sesshomaru had left on the bench. Pouring a generous amount into his hands, he worked it into his hair.
“What are you doing?” Sesshomaru demanded and started to pull his hair out of Inuyasha’s grasp.
“Relax its just soap,” Ya big baby. I should have used on him that girly jasmine smelling stuff of Kagome’s.
He frowned at the insolent tone. It didn’t smell like the crude lye soap the humans used. Warily he tilted his head back again allowing Inuyasha’s hands to work the clove-scented lather thru his long silver hair. His lips parted on a breathy moan and he made an appreciative noise deep in his throat as Inuyasha’s blunt human nails scrubbed his scalp.
Biting his bottom lip, Inuyasha reluctantly untangled his hands from the soap slick silver strands of Sesshomaru’s long hair and taking up the sponge, rinsed the soap out with one hand on his brother’s forehead to keep the suds from his eyes. Frowning he dragged his eyes away from his brother’s arched neck and parted lips. Grabbing the half-full bucket he poured it over Sesshomaru’s hair, rinsing the last of the shampoo out quickly, the sand floor absorbing the suds and water both. His hands clenched a moment around the empty bucket as his felt his body reacting, his cock getting hard. What am I doing? Hell, why am I doing this? Usually we’re at each others throats by now. He quickly stomped over to the spring to dip out more water his body’s reactions confusing him only to freeze as he turned back to Sesshomaru staring at the vision he made. How could that one-armed asshole look so erotic lounging naked on a stone bench? Inuyasha watched as his brother shivered, the pale skin of his chest pebbling with goose bumps. Dragging his gaze up from the rose tipped alabaster perfection of his brother’s chest before his eyes could stray lower he looked up and gasped as sizzling gold eyes stared back in… invitation?
“Yasha?” Sesshomaru blinked. I did not just use that old pet name, did I? He felt his mind slipping under a sea of warm slumbering darkness. Where’s the bed, wasn’t there a bed in this rat hole. He groaned sinking down on the stone bench. Forget the bed I’ll sleep right here and get this whole cycle induced lust out of my system.
He dropped the bucket as he rushed over to his brother, “Shit not now Baka, I don’t want to have to drag your unconscious ass to the bed.” Pushing Sesshomaru back up into a sitting position he slung Sesshomaru’s right arm over his shoulder lifting him from the bench with a grunt, his brother’s water slick skin almost sliding from his grip. “You could at least lose some weight.” He grunted. The taunt had the desired effect on Sesshomaru as he took most of his weight off his human frame and tried to pull away as they walked. He growled as he struggled into the main chamber. Sharp pain knotted the muscle in his hip as Sesshomaru’s struggles knocked him into the edge of the wooden bed frame gouging it into his side. “Ouch! Stop fighting me Baka.” Growling, he pushed Sesshomaru forcefully away from him and onto the bed.
“Remind me to kill you when I wake up Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru mumbled as his eyes slid shut.
“Fuck you too asshole.” Inuyasha looked at the vine-covered opening as the morning light filtered thru the leaves and with its touch, his demon power flowed back into him turning his hair white and stealing the consciousness from Sesshomaru, “Ah, peace and quiet for the next 24 hours.” What the Hell! Looking to the bed he noticed a white cloth clutched in his brother’s hand. When did he steal my towel?
