Just my version of a resolution of that sexual tension between our favorite lovers, Kagome and Inuyasha. Working on my romance-novel style, so apologies for the flowery writing. Critique is welcome though! Set directly after The Final Act. Chapter 1. Back! But Ready? A soft morning breeze moved through the air. Kagome was gazing at the sacred tree. She mouthed a small prayer that everyone in the past was well. Three years had gone by since she returned from the feudal era to find the well sealed. Since high school graduation, Kagome's summer vacation was leaving her with way too much spare time to think about him. Kagome often contemplated the possibility of seeing Inuyasha again, but something about that day and contemplation was different. Kagome knelt before the sacred tree, and spoke to it. “Inuyasha, if you're there... I miss you. If I never see you again, know that I will never love another. How could I?” Some tears found their way to the surface of Kagome's eyes, as they usually did when thinking of the common sentiment. She blinked them away, but the tree looked like it was leaning toward her somehow. The air changed, now tingling Kagome's skin, alerting her that something was afoot. She had convinced herself to stop checking the well more than once a week after the first year went by. A whole year of checking daily to be met with disappointment every time was crushing. All the false hopes had pushed her into one too many a depression, but for the first time in months, Kagome walked toward the well, sensing a presence she had not felt in years. As she neared, the urging grew stronger, and she was soon sprinting to the well, catching herself in the doorway. A familiar glow radiated from the depths, the light growing stronger and beckoning Kagome. “Mom!” Fighting her instincts to jump right in, Kagome knew she had to talk to her family. The decision of leaving them to stay in the feudal era was one she had grappled with since she realized where her heart lay. She pivoted on her heel, quickly bursting into her kitchen. Her mind, heart, and feet were racing. Kagome's grandpa made his way into the kitchen, Sota at his back. “What's all the commotion?” Breathless, Kagome burst, “The well!” She gasped. “It's open again! … I think.” “You think?” Sota looked quizzical. “It's not like I went down to test it. It's been closed off for all this time. Who knows how long it will be open, or if I would be able to return back here? There's no way to be sure.” She looked into everyone's face, apprehensive. When she met her mother's gaze, Kagome's mom sighed with a strange expression. A pained look in her eyes, but a smile on her face. “Kagome, listen. I reconciled the fact long ago that part of you simply belongs over there. And I do know how you feel. If your father was still with us, there is no way we could be separated. I thought that maybe I was lucky when the well closed, that you'll be here forever, but that's just selfish.” She took Kagome's hand in one of hers, and with the other wiped tears away. “I'm sorry if my selfish thoughts were somehow keeping you from going, but I have accepted that if you want to stay over there, I must give you my blessing. As my daughter, your happiness is what matters most.” With tears in her eyes, Kagome hugged her mother. “Thank you so much. Throughout everything Mom, you've been more supportive than I ever could have expected. I don't know if anything I did would've been possible without you. I love you.” “I love you too, Kagome. I'm so grateful to be your mom. Being there for your high school graduation, and spending all this time with you has been more than I could ever ask for. And deep down, I think we all believed this day would come.” Sota and Grandpa came over and joined in the hug. Within an hour, Kagome packed her huge yellow bag with as much supplies as she could carry for her last trek from her world to the past. She said final goodbyes, and wrote letters to her friends for Sota to deliver, with specific instructions of news to tell everyone. At the edge of the well, Kagome stood. She remembered back to the first time she was literally pulled in. The feeling in her stomach now was similar. She gave one last look to her family, then stepped off the edge. The passage void of gravity and direction jarred Kagome, strange to her after so much time. Once earth was beneath her feet, she looked up, seeing blue sky. “Inuyasha!” Inuyasha had spent the morning helping Miroku exorcise and destroy a demon possessing youths at a nearby village, and the two of them were on there way back to their own village. He'd already been to the well once that day, but felt like it was time to go back and check on it again. He got irritable if he wasn't able to stay near it. “Do you ever miss traveling, Inuyasha?” Miroku interrupted his stewing, and sounded like he may wax nostalgic. “Sometimes. I hate being idle, but as long as I get to kill something evil every once in a while, I'm okay not running around everywhere. Besides, it doesn't take me too long to get away if I need to.” “That's just the thing. You can run off whenever you want, but I am obligated by family to return. You really shouldn't wait around here if you don't have a reason, Inuyasha.” He knew what the monk was up to. Inuyasha had become more of a shadow of his former self since Kagome left, and Miroku and Sango simply did not enjoy watching Inuyasha torture himself after all he had been through. Losing two loves-of-your-life was hard enough, in their opinion, and thought he needed a change of scenery. “Look Miroku, it'll take a lot more than that to get rid of me. I was around here way before you ever came along, and the place would probably be burned to the ground if it weren't for me, so shut your trap. They need me around here.” “You have an undeniable point there, Inuyasha. Here and every other village this side of the East are indebted to you. I'm just saying it might do you some good to go out and about, rescue some attractive farmer's daughters, receive some hospitality, you know, clear your head.” “What you do to clear your head and what I do to clear mine don't even come close, Miroku. And I'm real sure that Sango would love to hear that little token of advice you just gave me.” “Now, now, don't be hasty, Inuyasha, it was only a joke.” Sweat formed on the monk's brow. “Mm.” The half-demon truly resented Miroku and Sango's insistence in butting into his business. If he never saw Kagome again, so be it, he could live knowing life would be safer for her but more painful for him. Inuyasha had accepted this pain, only because he held onto hope that he may see her once more. It was what drove him. He checked the well multiple times a day, and was challenged to be kept busy. Miroku wanted him to just move on, but he knew if it were Sango, the situation would be mirrored. Still, since their worries did come from concern, he would let the occasional criticism slide. Suddenly, a shift in the wind brought the scent to Inuyasha's nose. He halted mid-step, whiffing the air. His ears twitched, faintly recognizing his name from a distance. Was it possible that he was actually not present for the moment he had been waiting all this time for? Dammit! “Inuyasha? What's the matter?” “...what? It can't be...” Without another word to Miroku, Inuyasha bounded off, flying toward the faint scent he had only dreamt about in the past three years. Kagome began climbing the side of the well. She would have to have Inuyasha get her bag. It was hard to believe he wasn't there. Unless something had happened to him. Or he wasn't around? She climbed faster, now terrified that he was being digested by demons fiercer than Naraku. As she neared the top, a clawed hand suddenly grasped hers, and pulled Kagome up. Inuyasha held her hand tight and stared into her eyes, incredulous at her appearance. “It's... you.” He pulled her in, and just embraced her for what seemed like days. Smelling her hair, squeezing her body. She was actually there. He pulled back some to look at her face again, his golden eyes flickering to her lips. Kagome's hands tickled his ears, then rested on his broad shoulders. “Inuyasha, I-” “Hey, what's going on? Who is that with you?” Miroku jogged up in the distance, panting. Kagome blushed and looked toward the monk, and Inuyasha cleared his throat awkwardly. When he came close, he laughed and shouted. “Oh... oh! Kagome? You're back!” Kagome hazily blinked her eyes awake. Had it all been a dream? Was it truly possible that she was back in the feudal era... with Inuyasha? Sleeping by her side, no less? This must be a dream, for Inuyasha's arm held fast on to Kagome's waist, and her own hand rested on top of his. Kagome couldn't suppress a smile when she felt Inuyasha's steady breath at the nape of her neck. Her first night back in the feudal era had been a calm one. Sure, Kagome didn't have her bed, but the peace of mind granted by Inuyasha's presence allowed her to sleep soundly, excited as she was to be back. The past three years in the modern world caused her to sometimes question whether or not she had ever gone back in time at all, if destroying the shard and all of the work leading up to that moment were just imagined. In moments like these, her doubts were quickly erased by memories of Inuyasha. Kagome knew she could never come up with a guy like that... or fall in love so hard with a figment of her imagination. Kagome thought back to when she was just 15, and would try to describe her ideal boyfriend by saying that he would have to be the exact opposite of Inuyasha. Not to mention how long she was in denial about loving him, only making it known just too late, when the well closed soon after, with her on the wrong side. Now she was 18 years old, and substantially wiser in many ways than the last time she saw him. Epiphanies about their relationship revealed themselves during high school, as Kagome patiently watched her friends date boys for the first time, develop long or fleeting relationships, experience sex and intimate touch, and Kagome could only compare in theory. Her own very brief experience with anything that could have led to sex was not something she remembered fondly. When the Sacred Jewel was destroyed, Kagome came home on such a high, only to find out the well became sealed, and fell into a deep depression. Knowing that Inuyasha would not suddenly show up on her windowsill was torture. After weeks passed, her mother was so concerned, she asked Kagome's friends to please try and cheer her up. Eri, Ayumi, and Yuka showed up in a heartbeat. Apparently, the timing could not have been more perfect, because the three of them had been invited to a high school party, and if they could pick a new guy for their friend, they were on it. They thought it was a good excuse to “get acquainted” with all of their soon-to-be classmates, especially the young men. After all, even though they had met Inuyasha a few times and liked him enough, they assumed he finally pushed Kagome too far by leaving her. Kagome had to go with their assumptions, and found herself at a bustling party wearing a tight skirt and an off the shoulder blouse. Eri kept handing her cup after cup of cheap booze, and Kagome drank it, thankful for the distraction. Before she knew it, Kagome was smashed and her worries about Inuyasha were a thing of the past... 500 years in the past, to be precise, which she shared with anyone who would listen, then write her off as being wasted. Although memories of that evening were fuzzy at best, Kagome remembered when Hojo showed up, and how she excitedly ran over to him, and dragged him to the kitchen to do a shot or two. Yet another testament to Kagome's toughness in addition to demon slaying was how she could hold her drink for a teenage girl. That night, Hojo's awkward flirtations made Kagome feel normal, and it was actually exciting when she clumsily threw her arms around his neck and shoved her tongue in her mouth. They fell onto a couch and were pretty oblivious to all the onlookers. For the first time, Kagome felt a guy's erection pressing on her leg as well as being pretty pleased with herself, that maybe being with a guy wasn't so difficult. After that thought, Kagome promptly passed out, but her friends assured her that they uprighted her, and Hojo was pretty cool about the whole fiasco, as always. Kagome's thoroughly embarrassing fore into the world of men and sex was staunchly stopped after that. A year later, when the girls were actually in high school, Kagome avoided parties like the plague, lest she make a similar or worse mistake. Mostly because she could not get over Inuyasha, and held out the hope they would be reunited, but Kagome was also somewhat apprehensive about sex itself. She was definitely embarrassed to admit that upon finally seeing Inuyasha again, and being held in his arms, one of her first thoughts were about sleeping with him. She pushed that thought away and for the time being, just accepted that they were together again. Like magnets with opposing charges, Inuyasha and Kagome could not be kept apart. When the well reopened, and she could return, Kagome knew that her only destiny lie on the other side. Kagome thought she was confident about the way she believed things should go between her and Inuyasha, but deep down, she was decently terrified. A sigh belied her heavily weighted mind. “Kagome? You alright?” Inuyasha sleepily said. He'd slept better than he had in years that night. “I'm fine, go back to sleep. And you don't have to ask me if I'm alright when I'm sleeping right next to you.” She couldn't help the obvious, but good natured quip. He sat up, half scowling. “But you weren't asleep. So I asked. What's the big deal?” “It almost seems like a habit, doesn't it? You'll always protect me,” Kagome said with her own sweet smile, quietly enough it was almost to herself. Like many other times, Inuyasha didn't need to say anything for Kagome to know he agreed. The silence was enough.
