Miroku was usually a very easy going man—tied up in his duties as a peaceful monk on a quest to vanquish Naraku it was usually better he not let the little things get to him.
But this was not just any little thing.
So Miroku, his towering height and build usually not so intimidating, stalked forward with a glower. His aura broadcasted a menacing encounter should anyone start anything, and even his shakoujo clanged with an ominous tone rather than its usual delightful jangle.
Kagome, his companion, walked her bike silently beside him—so morose she didn’t even flinch from his sour mood. Shippou silently went with the two holy people of the group, sitting in the bike’s basket and quietly playing with his small toy horse.
The three were even accompanied by Kirara—for no one wanted to walk with Sango and Inuyasha.
“For what it’s worth...I’m sorry,” Kagome whispered, not even looking up from her feet.
Miroku clenched his jaw. “Ara, Kagome-sama, you have nothing to be sorry for.” His strained voice didn’t invite any more conversation.
Sango and Inuyasha had wisely decided to walk behind the group on their way back to Kaede’s, and while he was thankful for this breathing room and not having to stare at the deceitful duo he was pained at their deception.
How could they have hidden this from the group? They were almost...Miroku had thought them like a family. He had thought Sango and he were meant to marry when the quest was over. He had thought Kagome would finally get Inuyasha to admit his feelings for her. How could he have thought so wrong? All the signs were there; the glances between each couple, the hints in conversations, the possessiveness in Inuyasha, the shy blush on Sango’s cheeks.
But the two warriors had been caught al flagrante, mindlessly enjoying each other without respect to how loud they were being or how close to camp. Miroku had quite innocently stumbled across them while collecting firewood with Kagome, she searching for a brook to fill up their canteens.
And poor Kagome had to watch another woman enjoy Inuyasha’s rough attentions.
Miroku had gaped at the couple, stunned, before his mind kicked into gear and he spun to try and delay the miko following him. Her sharp intake of breath said he was already too late, and he had to watch the way her wide eyes became grey with sorrow.
With a quiet murmur he had redirected her back to camp to wait for their wayward comrades, and she had listlessly followed his guidance. They hadn’t gathered nearly enough wood, or found a water source, but then the other two hadn’t appeared to be hunting anyways.
Kagome’s eyes were still grey, mirror like. And she still walked with that listlessness that had marked her spirit since she’d discovered another of Inuyasha’s painful dalliances. As if Kikyou wasn’t enough...now Kagome had a woman she thought of as her sister enjoying the attentions of the one who only ever had a harsh word for her.
Miroku clenched his grip on the shakoujo, his keen mind fitting pieces together. He was not a vengeful being, in fact neither was Kagome. But what he wanted was to prove to the pair that they were not just going to break or wait for them. Kagome deserved better, Miroku deserved better.
It was days later, in another attack upon their group, that the true repercussions of the fracturing showed themselves. Kagome’s hama no ya faltered. Her barrier sparked and died.
The only thing that remained strong was her ability to detect the shikon and purify the shards.
But then that cursed jewel was so much a part of her…it was only her powers that left her. Miroku had theories about how her powers and the jewel were faltering when they got further away from her—she was drawing in on herself.
It didn’t help that this development made Inuyasha rage, or that even the usually level headed Sango hadn’t been able to hide her incredulity. So Miroku was angry and protective and had taken to meditations.
During these times Kagome would play quietly with Shippou and Kirara nearby. For the group had truly fractured. Old bonds kept them together still, but a chasm was opening.
Miroku blinked as he considered the old bond especially between Kagome and Inuyasha—a hanyou with human reiki and inu youki. Then he considered the aspects of the jewel…and his eyes drew open to stare at the woman playing with the fox kit.
It appears he would be going on a trip.
…
Kouga gaped at the monk, eyeing up the stormy expression where he was usually so affable. “What exactly are you suggesting.”
“Kagome needs to be loved, and you need to learn how to properly express yourself around her.” Miroku showed his first hesitation and narrowed his eyes. “But she is a woman of two worlds...and I think it would be best if we both mated her. You can help her soothe her demonic cravings, and I can play into her holy powers.”
Kouga sat on his rump with a thump, inviting the monk to sit while staring at him with wide eyes. Some demons made such dealings when they both found a woman desirable, but he was certain holy men didn’t! He wanted to know what was up before he committed to anything. Maybe Inutrasha had smartened up and was trying to trap him into betraying Kagome.
Highly unlikely, but then, so was this kind of proposition.
“Explain.”
Miroku leaned his shakoujo against his shoulder while leaning in seriously. “I have a theory. Kagome was born with the jewel inside her, two opposite kis fighting for eternity. I think it marked her spirit—her mating a hanyou would have soothed both sides of that jewel and the forces that are constantly a part of her now. But Inuyasha is no longer suited.”
The heaviness to those words made Kouga’s skin prickle. With a low growl he leaned in, “What did mutt face do now?”
Miroku closed his eyes and ignored the question. “Because of this her reiki is unstable, and she feels hurt and adrift. There is no one who she feels attached to. No one she feels will love her.”
“I love her, she’s my woman!” Kouga barked out.
Miroku’s purple eyes sharpened on him, and Kouga stilled. For a human that man had a powerful gaze—but then he did have spiritual powers that weren’t usually in play. “Well she doesn’t think you love her!” he snapped.
Kouga’s nostrils flared as he stared at this man and then he listened.
“Your original claim on her was voiced after you noticed her power—her ability to see the Shikon no Kakera. And then every time you’ve encountered her since you’ve purposely riled up Inuyasha.”
Kouga slowly straightened his spine, squaring his shoulders. This was true, his pack had witnessed her power, her loyalty to the kit, her honour to help them in their fight, her compassion for her captors. They recognized that she was worthy to be alpha female.
“But all you are telling Kagome is that you love her power, and that you love trying to best Inuyasha.”
A sharp breath of the cold morning air stung his nose as he inhaled, and Kouga gaped.
Miroku sighed and mopped his clothed hand down his face.
“But do you love her?” Kouga inquired carefully.
Purple eyes closed and his companion sighed. “Truth, I’m not certain. I know I admire her greatly, and she’s a beautiful woman. But I’ve never allowed myself to think on it—she was Inuyasha’s.”
Kouga’s eyes narrowed—knowing that was as good as an admission of love as any. Kagome had a way about her, if the monk really looked he wouldn’t help but love her. “Why did you come to me...I’m sure she had many other admirers of youkai blood.”
The monk gaped at him. “Kagome knows you and is safe with you. Are you saying you don’t want to try this out?”
“I didn’t say that,” Kouga growled out lowly. “But I’m missing information—and you’ve come a long way alone to talk to me. So talk.”
A grumpy face washed over his companion.
Kouga wondered where the happy go lucky monk had gone, all he had seen was an alpha negotiating this entire time. The monk was usually so unassuming you didn’t notice how he towered over other human males, or that his robes hid a warriors build. But Kouga knew, and now that holy warrior was out to negotiate.
Why?
“Kagome and I discovered that our two companions are carnally involved, despite promises and agreements between us. Kagome is heartbroken,” the monk sighed, “her powers flare up and she can’t seem to control it. I think that Inuyasha, despite their differences, was already acting as her partial bonded but now all her soul ties to him have been severed. And now she feels weak and powerless, and everything he’s ever called her.”
Kouga snarled and a low growl rose from his very belly to rumble out his throat. He stood abruptly, barking back to the caves and then turning to the monk. “Let us go talk to our miko then.” It didn’t matter the other man’s schemes, his woman needed him.
Miroku let out a sigh of relief and started the journey with the Wolf Prince. Kouga was the only demon he trusted to truly have Kagome’s interests at heart, to truly love her. While there were others interested (Kagome just was naturally magnetic) he wouldn’t trust them when his back was turned. Kagome needed someone willing to truly commit and work at this.
Miroku was pretty sure other demons would agree, only to attempt to kill Miroku once the mating occurred so they could have the miko all to themselves. Which would just put them back in the same mess. Kagome needed youkai and ningen—youki and reiki.
The two men, alphas in their rights of experience and circumstance, started a tentative conversation that built and carried them the entire way back to Edo. By the time they arrived, Miroku was very sure that Kouga was the right demon, and that Kagome would be fine.
They just had to get her to agree.
Despite Inuyasha’s protests, the group accepted Kouga’s company for a while. Kagome welcomed him with a careful smile, closing her eyes so they wouldn’t see her brokenness.
Miroku felt his heart clench.
Their group was no longer as lively as it had been before, their camaraderie was stifled and worn away.
Kouga and Miroku became Kagome’s honor guard, staving off Inuyasha’s attempts to bully her back into a good mood or whatever he harped on to her about that day. Sango, the usually silent warrior, was even more stiffly silent at the rear of the group.
They paid her no mind, and in their travels they finally camped in an area near a spring.
Shippou was quick to bring this up, anxious for bath time with Kagome. Miroku quirked a smile and hid it behind his hand as he meditated.
...
Kouga’s intense eyes focused on the kit and the way Kagome became a little more spirited. As the pair left for the springs he smirked—that kit really had her heart. When Kagome had risked her life to save the kit on their first meeting he’d seen the start of it. But the two acted like family, like Kagome mothered the kit herself.
Grooming was family business after all.
Well...he turned to the monk and lifted a brow.
Miroku bowed his head and stood, and the pair walked the other direction to talk. Miroku took one glance at the rest of their group and then walked through the camp, petting Kirara at her post on his way through. Kouga followed quietly, with a snarl at Inuyasha and the quiet slayer.
“I was thinking I need to cut it soon,” Kagome mused to Shippou as they prepared for the hot spring. Shippou gaped and squealed his disagreement, and Miroku chose to speak up from behind them.
“I think that would be a very unpopular decision, Kagome-sama.”
There were no squeals of indignation or cries of ‘Hentai’ like days of old. Miroku certainly not mischievous enough to attempt peeking, and Kagome was lethargic and too insecure to believe anyone would actually bother peeking on her.
“Miroku?” she whispered and peered into the hedges.
When both Kouga and Miroku stepped out together Kagome blinked.
Kouga felt his heart break. His woman sat there in a loose kimono, combing water into her hair in preparation for the soap. She was still gorgeous and called to him, but she seemed so much more frail with her heartbreak clear for all to see.
“Hair is important for a woman,” he rumbled as he kneeled behind her and took her comb. He gathered up the mass in his hands and started with the ends. “In canine culture a woman with longer hair means that her mate is the best protector, and that he can take care of her. Its state is a reflection of how strong their bond is.”
Kagome sighed and let him play with her hair, but confessed. “It’s just so thick and curly. It gets in my way and makes me stand out more—people already think I’m weird.”
“Kagome-sama, your hair is perfect.” Miroku kneeled and sat in his meditations right at the edge of the spring, watching as Shippou agreed with a determined nodding face before he slipped into the water with his rubber duck.
She laughed lightly.
Kouga finished combing her hair, running his claws through the dark silky strands and breathing in the scent that lifted from them. His woman always smelled of power, but it wasn’t the bitter forceful power of other holy women he’d encountered. She smelled sweet instead, a citrus undercurrent to her vanilla and cinnamon.
He had to scold himself into letting her hair go, shifting to sit to the side instead so they could all talk. “How’s my woman?” he asked softly, his slate blue eyes piercing her soft misty ones.
She blinked, her lip trembling before she stretched it in a smile. “I’m fine Kouga-kun. And you, the messenger came, is the pack well?”
“Never better. We just negotiated an alliance with the southern tribe, it’ll be a good winter.” He squared his shoulders proudly. “Only one thing could make my lot in life better,” he murmured, watching Miroku step up behind the pretty miko.
Shippou froze in his playing, looking up at them with sharp eyes and a twitching nose.
Kouga nodded at the kit, and the smart thing smiled before rushing out of the water and dressing, scampering back to camp as Kagome watched confused.
The houshi gave Kagome a hug from behind, whispering “Just listen,” before looking at Kouga.
The Wolf Prince took in a deep breath, edging closer and gently taking her hands. “I have been told that I was approaching you wrong.”
“What?” her brows furrowed.
He smiled at her—so cute. “I love you Kagome, I like how much you care for others and how you’ve adopted the kit. I like how you try your best to make sure everyone feels welcome and safe. I like the way you are so unaware of just how beautiful you are.”
“Kouga?” she breathed out uncertainly, her hands trembling in his grasp.
Miroku hummed and leaned his chin on her shoulder, “How eloquent. I have a confession as well, and after that performance I believe Kouga has set the standard.” Miroku took in a deep breath. “I love how you love everyone. I love how forgiving you are, and how encouraging you are, and how compassionate you are. I find myself falling more in love the longer I consider your spirit and your beauty.”
Kagome’s breath hitched, her body trembling.
Kouga came up behind her, hugging her and comforting her while she absorbed everything they’d said.
“I don’t understand…” She bit her lip before continuing. “You want me to choose?
“No Kagome,” Miroku said softly, admiring the way Kouga’s hold on her had loosened the kimono even more.
“I…”
“We want you to accept both of us,” Kouga whispered into her hair.
She stiffened and Miroku smiled entreatingly, holding out his hands in surrender.
Kagome jerkily nodded her head, though her eyes darted about in thought. They’d have to soothe her into their touch, explain their thinking to her. So Miroku started with a murmuer, “I’ve been watching you—I’ve a theory about your powers, your need for a mate.”
“A mate?” she whimpered when Kouga nipped at her ear.
Kouga rumbled out a constant pleased growl as he smoothed his palms into her muscles, rubbing down her arms and then back up as he nuzzled into her neck. Kagome breathed in shakily and sighed, leaning back into him. Miroku stared at them together and approached, admiring the darkness of both their hair, yet the different shades of each. And the paleness of Kagome’s skin against Kouga’s tan. They both had blue eyes, but Kouga’s were the slate blue of a demon, where as Kagome had a smokey grey-blue color of miko power. The contrast of their size was delightful too, for Kagome looked all the more dainty and feminine against Kouga.
When he was right in front of Kagome he kissed her nose and then slowly kneeled down, trailing his hands along her sides and then the outsides of her legs.
“A mate,” Kouga growled. “You need someone to balance out your powers, like the Shikon. Lucky us, we both want the position. Works perfectly.”
