“I said I don’t need ya around, wench!” Inuyasha bellowed for the tenth time in five minutes, but Kagome was trying her hardest to keep calm though Inuyasha was on a roll it seemed. The first time she had realized his demonic powers went away on the night of the new moon was three months ago, but that had been a less than desirable situation. Spider demons had almost eaten them and a young girl, but luckily the night couldn’t last forever. She had hoped that he would trust her after that since she had, after all, kept his secret and taken care of him during his time of weakness! But the last time this particular night came along things became crazy and it was looking like it was going to happen again.
“But Inuyasha! You know what tonight is!” She stomped her foot, every time this night approached the dog demon brat would make sure she either ran home in tears or hid away in a hut in the village crying herself to sleep. He was so cruel!
He growled at her then, his knuckles cracking as he flexed his hands, his claws seeming to catch a gleam of light in some way when he did this; it always made her heart race with uncertainty. She had not been around that long, she was from a different era, he was a half demon and she was human; but none of this bothered her because a soul was a soul, no matter the body. What made her uneasy about his attitude and anger was the fact that she knew she wasn’t truly his friend yet, he tolerated her because she could see the jewel shards and was the Shikon’s rightful protector. He needed her, but since he first met her he proved he would kill her for the completed thing, and though he had saved her since then enough times to make someone think otherwise, she knew he saved her out of necessity.
“Go Home! I don’t need some puny bitch like you around taking care of me. Even at my weakest I am stronger than you can ever hope to be.” He spat at her. “Their ain’t no jewel shards around so I don’t need ya, you have no purpose here!” She felt the words lash into her and flinched. He must not have been thinking in his haste to anger her because he gripped her upper arm tightly, feeling his control waver slightly because the sun was only a few hours from setting.
Kagome tried to keep calm, she tried to let every bit of that bitter anger for those words go as he spoke them- but she couldn’t, “Sit.” He hit the dirt face first with that whisper of pain, she knew it would hurt him more than usual because the slow process of his demonic side starting to go away was starting. She picked up her backpack then, “I am going home. And to make sure you remember that I have feelings, Sit Sit Sit Sit Sit Sit SIT!” She made sure he was unconscious, knowing that sunset was close enough that he’d wake after he had turned human.
She walked away from him, heading out of Edo silently as people were settling in for their nightly routines indoors. No one paid attention to the odd girl now because the night hours were the demon hours of Inuyasha’s Forest and even though the half demon mostly kept the area clear it was not uncommmon for one to happen through the area during traveling, but Kagome didn’t care; she was ready to go home and be away from the stupid dog demon. She was near the trail she took to go to the hot spring and it made her steps hesitate before changing directions, he would be unable to find her since he would surely flee the hut he was in as soon as he woke to go to his hiding spot.
The area had been pretty well checked the night before so she had no thoughts about demons coming to eat her because her mind was on the mistrust and obvious loathing he had for her when he thought she wasn’t looking. She wanted to be his friend so badly, but he was determined to keep her at arms length from him and refused to tolerate her idea of friendship because she was still just a jewel collector to him. She slipped into the hot spring wearing her bathing suit, she may have been uncaring of danger but she was very aware of her modesty.
When Kagome had first fallen through the well she was at a loss on how to handle everything, she was a seventeen year old girl trying her hardest to finish school with honors, but the traveling between times had already proved to affect her grades. She went from all A’s to having B’s and a C in math. This was something she tried hard to remedy, so she propped up her math book on a boulder and read over notes and equations while she soaked in the hot water, using her candle from her backpack to make sure she could read as the sun set slowly; she was going to take her sweet time relaxing and forgetting her troubles in math before going home to fall in bed and sleep soundly for the first night in weeks.
After realizing she would be unable to attend school that often her family had decided that she was going to be pulled out of school with the exception of tests because they were “paying for a private tutor during the families unexpected tragedy” so she only had to show up for the core exams and semester checkpoints, but she did not have a tutor- she had her own will power and the books from her classes to try to decipher on her own. She had to show her mother that she was really trying and not shame her family by being the first Higurashi to not graduate with flying colors and scholarship offers. Her mother understood that her destiny was different, but Kagome had grown up with a game plan and this had not been a part of it.
The sun had vanished a while back, her fingers had pruned and her muscles were jelly now but she was so engrossed in Advanced Calculus so she hadn’t realized how late it was until she heard the distinct noises of nightlife critters that were in any wooded area. She quickly dried off and put her clothes back on, grabbing up her newly stuffed bag and lit candle before running off towards the well. “No. No. No. No. No. Stupid woman! Pay attention to your surroundings!” she was trying to be quiet as she ran but her imagination was teasing her brain with the lack of moonlight and only the dim candlelight to guide her. She didn’t want to draw too much attention to herself so she didn’t use the flashlight but would if it came down to it being an emergency.
She thought of Inuyasha once more, hoping he had made it to his hiding place of choice and worry set in. She may have been mad at him, but she didn’t want him to get hurt either. It wasn’t long before she was in the clearing with the well and the path back to Edo. She had a decision, go home or go back to the village. She could feel the burning ache of unshed tears making her throat thick, his words from earlier echoing in her mind. She sat on the edge of the well, knowing the tears were going to come so she was avoiding having to explain to her family why she was crying if any were still awake.
That was how he found her. He had been very careful to avoid interaction with Inuyasha so far, he was waiting for the perfect time to introduce himself and reign hell on the half demons world. He had all but lost his control when he saw the arrival of the girl, had to second glance the female because she looked like Kikyo but after watching her he had been able to clearly see she was opposite of the dead priestess and had a look all her own past the first glance. He had watched as Inuyasha berated her, the very act of it catching his interest because the silver haired fool had been in love with Kikyo so for him to be so mean to her obvious relative was out of character, even for the foul mouthed Inuyasha.
He kept an eye on the pair from a distance and learned that the female jumped through a well to “go home” but the power that surged from it felt timeless, it was strong and a touch pure, as she was, but it was endless. Naraku wondered if he could harness that power in any way; but that was not the most intriguing thing he discovered that night; the moonless night was Inuyasha’s night of weakness, he was human and effectively drove the woman away to protect her as well as himself. He could see that she had to go away on that night because Inuyasha couldn’t protect her like he needed too and she had not mastered her obvious priestess abilities, but she couldn’t see that.
Naraku believed with her stubborn nature, which she had proved to have, she would focus more on that aspect of herself over her mind if she only knew. When he had felt the re-emergence of the Shikon Jewel he had gone to it; he had been waiting for it’s return for fifty years. When he figured out it was held by Kagome he started to plan, the crow demons had accepted a promise of power to bring it to him but the girl had deterred that plan when she shattered it before it could come to him. He had been seeking out each precious piece of it and so was the pair.
He kept his distance from them on most occasions, but he had ventured closer this night because there was a larger chunk of it not too far away and he wanted it first. Their argument, however, let him know they were still unaware of it due to emotional conflict and moonless night chaos he had seen once before. She was an intriguing woman really, her mannerisms were very peculiar and her habit of reading books of education that usually only rulers had caught his attention, and he wondered where the well took her? She had strayed from the well though, unlike the other times, so he had ceased his pursuit of the jewel shard to follow her.
Regret for letting the shikon piece get away didn’t exist because the scraps of fabric she wore to cover her womanly jewels was mouthwatering and her body was curvy in the right places and full in the perfect spots, not like the human women of this time that were malnourished or weak from lack of use of the body. She was healthy, in ways that a demon would seem to a fool hearted human. He had been able to get closer among the treetops to Kagome because she was reading her book so intently and when he was able to catch sight of it with his enhanced sight he understood why; it was knowledge he had never seen before.
When she ran to the well he made himself move faster and waited for his opportunity to set his dark plan in motion. Kagome’s tears were what he needed, what he had been waiting for. She was radiating purity and her tears only made it more potent in scent; she was downright edible. He would manipulate this human in the finest of ways, he would make her love him.
“Why are you crying?” Kagome gasped and looked up, brown eyes wide as saucers but still filled with tears as she met the red pair staring down at her. How had he managed to sneak up on her! She stood quickly, taking cautionary steps away from him. Besides his eyes, the first thing Kagome saw about the mystery man was he was handsome, his hair came down to his ribs in inky black waves and his jawline was defined. He was as fair skinned as she was and obviously supported great muscle tone below his clothing from what she could make out in the candlelight. His voice was captivating, drawing her focus from his appearance to his lips, which were perfectly designed for his facial features. “I will not hurt you, I simply wanted to know why something as delicate as you was upset.”
“Who are you?” She managed to speak clearly, her voice barely wavering from crying. She shifted her eyes to the depths of the well, debating simply throwing herself in quickly and letting the timeless void swallow her up and take her home where she would be safe. She could tell the man was a demon, though half like Inuyasha he was far more powerful. Where their auras began to mingle she swore she could see bits of static crawling through the air, his demonic energy was malevolent in nature and seemed to seep out of his pores; but then there was his absolutely captivating features and gentle voice that contradicted his natural nature. She wondered if the foreboding feeling she got from him was simply because he was a powerful demon and the only other truly great humanoid demon she had met had been Sesshomaru and he was far from pleasant and tried to kill her. Would this demon too?
“I am Naraku. I do not usually come through these parts, but I was hunting and happened to smell your tears. I would not usually approach a priestess, but you are dressed so oddly that I couldn’t help but wonder if you were something more.” He wanted to peak her interest as much as possible in the brief interaction he had planned for them so he didn’t move too much, making the woman’s nerves worse would only hinder his plans.
Kagome’s eyes automatically shot down to look at the length of her blue plaid skirt, and gripped her fists tightly. As convenient as it was to wear her high school uniform so she could quickly jump in and go to school at any moment for her tests it drew far too much attention in the Feudal Era and she was thinking about changing this aspect to something more traditional to keep a low profile or at least not a skirt. She wondered why she hadn’t done it sooner in all honesty, she was only in school for a few days every eight weeks now. “Umm. It’s, it’s nothing. I am fine. I had to borrow clothes from a villager.” Kagome lied easily, knowing that speaking of time traveling in any era was considered insane.
Naraku, of course, knew she was lying but let her continue on her charade. “Can I be of assistance, priestess?” he cooed, wanting her to trust him as quickly as he could manage without looking suspicious.
“Kagome.” She automatically corrected the title priestess that the village used so much, she hated it. “And thank you, Naraku, but I am fine. Just got into an argument with a friend.” She internally flinched when using the term friend. She realized that she was starting to relax ever so slightly in his dark presence and shunned herself; this was an unknown demon that clearly felt evil and she was alone in the forest without the protection of Inuyasha. This man could devour her, be after jewel shards, or simply think she was something to plunge his manhood- she stopped that line of thought very quickly as she blushed.
Naraku made no move to leave and she couldn’t simply go through the well without it being a life or death moment because her secret had to be guarded. If the well was destroyed on either side she would have no way home and no way back to fix her historical mess up with the Shikon.”If you are in trouble, I offer you my aid Kagome.” He moved then, catching her off guard with the fluidity of his movements until he was standing a few inches from her again. Kagome wanted to run, but knew from her past experience that it only excited a demon more if you ran; she wasn’t going to be a hunting game.
“Th-thank you.” Her soft voice was music to his ears, she was nothing like Kikyo had been in her living years and it was tempting because she was warm and sweet where Kikyo had been cold and bitter. “How do I know that I can trust you?” she hadn’t meant to sound rude, but from her short time in this world so far she knew better than to trust as blindly as she did in her own world.
Naraku thought of this for a moment, having not expected her to be so cautious, in his experience a crying female was always quick to buckle under kindness. He had a small shard on him from a happen chance encounter with a demon boar so he reached into his sleeve and, with a small smile, handed it to her. When she reached for it cautiously he brushed the very tips of his claws over her palm, watching her shiver slightly. “I believe you are looking for these. I can feel others on you.”
Kagome was dumbfounded, never had a demon simply given a shard to her with no protest besides Inuyasha wanting her to purify one with her touch. “You don’t want it?” she said aloud more to herself than as a question to him. As she held tight to it, still wary of some sort of trickery, but he was shaking his head.
“It belongs to you.” Was his cryptic response before he feigned capturing a noise in the distance, “It is not safe in the forests on the moonless nights, do you require escort home?” He might have been an evil manipulative creature, but he was still well mannered. His purple sleeves moved in the gentle breeze as the wind tossed her hair, he could see the internal conflict raging through those earth toned eyes.
“No. Thank you. I am almost there, and to bring a demon to the village would only cause panic and misinterpretation. I do not want there to be a fuss over me because I was out after dark.” She knew this was a real answer and was relieved when he nodded before turning to walk away.
“Pleasant dreams, Kagome.” Her shoulders released tension as she felt his aura dissipate, which could only mean he was able to fly as well. Her heart was racing with the encounter, she didn’t know what to make of him. She quickly put it aside once she was safely through the well and in the void.
When she closed up the well house she took a cautious look around, knowing nothing was going to jump out and eat her in this time but the habit to check formed quickly it seemed. The moon was gone here too, all the lights were off in her house and she was grateful; she had too much to think about. She used the spare key to let herself in, skipping the stairs that would creak on her way up to her room. She had been planning on falling right into bed when she got back, but now she was pouring over her books again.
Kagome was trying not to think about how Inuyasha’s aura didn’t feel like it was bad at all, yet he treated her like duty and burden most of the time and how Naraku’s aura had felt like pure evil, yet he was kind and gentle with her. That time was so confusing! She tried for an hour to not think of it, to focus on history; which was horribly inaccurate! She gave up finally and Naraku’s last words to her echoed in her mind as she went to sleep.
