I’m sorry for the long wait, my muse just couldn’t seem to focus on this one for a while. There is no citrus in this chap but there will be next time, I hope you enjoy anyway.CARNAL INSTINCT CHAPTER TWO FIRST MEETINGSKoga shook his head good naturedly as his comrades teased him.He was newly mated, and it was a tradition to bug the hell out of the newly mated male at the first chance that presented itself.
He had joined in on such teasing on numerous occasions, and couldn’t complain when it was aimed back at him. Although he was having to endure a little more them many had, the simple reason being that he had no idea who his mate was. He had never met her and didn’t even know her name or what kind of demoness she was. The later of which was a little strange, not one of the wolves in his tribe had been able to define her type by her smell, and considering that wolves had some of the keenest senses in the demon world, it had fueled a bit of a guessing game.It had been two days since he had returned to the dens with his new mate in his arms and she had yet to awaken from her exhausted slumber. That fact worried him despite reassurances from some of the females of the pack that it was completely natural after a heat cycle for the female to go into a short hibernation. The males of the tribe however had used that as one of the main tools to try to get to him; of course it was also a way of giving him a backhanded compliment for his stamina as a lover that his mate had yet to recover from his taking of her.“Earth to Koga!” One of the males close to him waved a hand in front of his face, in an effort to get his attention.“I bet I know what he’s thinking about!” A voice farther away taunted, which brought another round of laughter to the hunting party.“Bet you don’t Balles, you don’t have a mate yet.” Koga shot back with a teasing grin.More laughter ensued as the teasing was momentary shifted from the Okami prince to one of his underlings. The group had enjoyed a very successful hunting trip and were now headed back to the den. Koga himself carried a large deer over his left shoulder, having been forced to accompany his men by the females of the pack, who claimed that his woman would not wake any sooner just because he sat by her side.
He really couldn’t help it, the feelings inside of him, while not of love, but rather of protectiveness along with other similar emotions which were caused by the mating bonds made him reluctant to leave her side.Koga also wanted to be the first thing she saw when she woke, to talk to her and get to know her, he was nervous about that part. But it didn’t diminish the desire for her company at all.
He was well aware that both he as well as the rest of the pack were more then a little anxious to see what kind of female had been brought into their midst. Even if they all danced around the issue and instead used it to tease him about being brave enough to risk being bound to a sharp tongued harpy.Never the less, he was eager to return to her side, her scent had already changed a great deal since their arrival at the den, she now clearly gave off the scent of a breeding female and he loved that smell, he was finally going to have his own offspring to look after and teach. The blue eyed prince paused suddenly as he felt strange sensation ripple through his senses, He hardly noticed when his comrades stopped as well and that many of them were regarding him curiously. He was too focused on the new feelings gently assaulting his being, it was as if his senses were coming awake for the first time, and yet it was unlike finding a new sound or scent.A grin suddenly split his face when he finally realized what it was he was experiencing.“Here Collion, take this.” He barely gave the youngest member of the party time to react before he tossed the deer he was carrying to the shaggy haired warrior.“She’s waking up.” He announced to his still puzzled companions before breaking into a relaxed run, he would finally be able to meet her and he wasn’t about to beat around the bush. The hunting party quickly followed suit, all of the wolves were eager to meet their new alpha female and see what she was like. They were not very far from the den and in less than five minutes they came within sight of the river feeding the waterfall that cascaded over the entrance of the main den.
Koga had just leaped over the river, having only another half mile to go when he nearly stumbled as a wave of fear coursed through his being. The feeling was so powerful, so unexpected that he very nearly doubled over from the force of it.It only took him a moment to realized that it was his new mates emotions he was feeling, and not his own. The fact was far from reassuring and he broke into a headlong run to get to the den.
Something was wrong, his mate was terrified.2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2The first thing she became aware of was the sound of rushing water, a sound that she was not accustomed to waking to. However she really wasn’t ready to face the new day so she burrowed further into her soft bed.Something tickled her nose and it wasn’t until she brought her hand up to remove the offending thing that she discovered that she was laying on a bed of furs, something that she had never slept on in her life.Slowly her eyes opened and she looked down at the rich chocolate pelt that was so soft beneath her head. Her brows furrowed in confusion, she obviously was NOT in her own room because her bed had silk covered pillows. Then she remembered that she wasn’t even at home, the last thing she remembered was traveling through the woods. Lifting her head she took in her surroundings, she was inside a large cave, and it was evident by the various piles of furs as well as weapons, bowls and other things that she was in someone’s home. Though she had no idea how she had come to be there. The sound of water that had awakened her turned out to be a waterfall that fell over part of the cave entrance, just enough light filtered through the water to tell her that it must be daytime. Reluctantly she pushed herself into a sitting position.Looking around her once again, she spotted her armor and sword sitting just to the side of her bed, she vaguely remembered feeling ill while she traveled, and she wondered if she had happened upon this place on her own or if she had been found in the woods and brought here to recover.Lifting her arms over her head she slowly stretched before running her fingers through her heavy mane of black hair, she found several tangles but decided that they weren’t bad enough to warrant immediate attention. Her stomach grumbled loudly telling her it had been some time since she had last eaten.Deciding she had best see to her bodies needs, she slowly got to her feet and after retrieving her sword and sliding it into her sash, she headed for the entrance way, intent on finding something to eat and possibly even her host, if she had one.
As she made her way through the various scattered stacks of bedding and piles of bones she tried to define the scent that hovered in the air, but there were so many of them she was having difficulty singling them out in order to identify what kind of demon’s she was dealing with, she knew she was in another demons lair partly from the scent and partly from the evidence scattered around her but she was certain that whatever kind they were she had never encountered them before, their scents were just to unfamiliar.Accept for one, it puzzled her that she seemed to be unconsciously searching for one scent in particular, her instincts told her that she knew this one scent, and yet it meant nothing to her. It was perplexing, but she decided that it would come to her in time, and there was no point in dwelling on it.Walking past the waterfall she stretched out her hand in an effort to trail her fingers through the rushing water. The curtain of liquid fell just beyond her reach but none the less she enjoyed the feeling of the mist it created caressing her skin. Her hand remained outstretched until she came to the entrance and headed into the sunshine outside. Her breath caught in her throat as the path before her wound off to her left while the rest went off a sheer cliff, stepping up to the edge she felt like she was standing on the tip of the world. The view was breath taking; dense forests covered the long valley that was spread out before her, the waterfall cascading down a hundred feet on her right into a large pool before flowing down the valley floor in the form of a long winding river. She was sure she had never seen such a beautiful sight in her whole life. Stretching her arms out to her sides she arched her back as she took a deep breath of the cool clean mountain air. She loved wild places like this; full of nature’s wonders and with no obvious sign of a settlement of any kind. Her stomach rumbled once again reminding her that she needed to fill it before her hunger pains became more serious. Abandoning her look out point she turned to follow the path. She had only taken several steps when someone came around the corner. She paused mid stride, although her stance did not show it, her body was ready to spring into action if the new arrival became threatening in any way.“Oh! You’re awake, I was sent to check on you.” The stranger seemed quite flustered as he immediately dropped down to one knee before her. “Forgive me if I startled you.” He apologized quickly.
She quickly took in his appearance, a fur wrapped around his waist, chest armor and his hair was white, shaved on both sides of his head while the strip down the middle had been spiked straight up. He seemed harmless and she recognized his scent from inside the cave.“I was not startled, and you may rise.” She told him, her voice soft. She hated it when people bowed to her; it was something she didn’t think she would ever get used too.He quickly gained his feet an eager smile on his lips. “I’m Hakkaku, I’m sure you must be hungry, please come with me, Koga should be back very soon.” With that he turned back the way he had come and motioned her to follow.‘Who is Koga?’ She wondered as she started after him. ‘The leader of a pack or head of this family I suppose.’She decided not to worry about it to much just yet; the offer of food was more urgent to her then finding out the identity of her host.Hakkaku disappeared from her sight almost instantly as he rounded the curve in their path. She could hear him call to someone else that she was awake. Rounding the curve herself she was surprised to see quite a number of people in a small shelf cut into the hill side.Almost immediately she was surrounded by a number of females and a few children, all of them welcoming her with excited voices and eager faces. But what puzzled her was that they were calling her Princess, she still wasn’t sure what kind of demons they were. But she knew that she had never meet any of them before and their chosen title for her made her uncomfortable to say the least. Before she could correct their assumptions that she was some kind of royalty and ask who was in charge, she was distracted by the feeling of someone or something staring intently at her back.Turning to greet whomever it was her words died on her lips as she saw that the hill above and behind her was lined with wolves, all of which were staring at her. She took a stumbling step backwards as fear gripped her. She could feel her limbs start to tremble making it impossible to flee while her heart pounded wildly in her chest making breathing difficult, the blood pound through her veins so loudly that it echoed in her ears and drowned out all other sound. The feeling of being surrounded assailed her and somehow she managed to turn and take another step backwards, back towards the cliff edge, in her terror she forgot the blade hanging at her side. All that she could see was images flashing before her eyes of an entire village falling to the white flashing fangs of the creatures that now watched her so intently, she could hear their screams as if it was yesterday and see the blood pooling across the ground. And she remembered running as the same fangs came for her. But now she found she could not run, she could only manage another step back as several of them started towards her. 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2Koga did not check his speed as he reached the cliff face that housed his packs dens; He simply leapt over the precipices and allowed himself to free fall several meters before his feet once again touched the earth and he skidded down the steep rock. He could feel the position of his mate and headed straight for her, she had to be close to the mouth of the den.He was forced to leap over a large outcropping and that was when he saw her below him, surrounded by a number of his pack both demon and wolf alike. He could hear several of the wolves whining in concern as well as see the looks on his people’s faces as he rapidly descended. He could also feel her terror rising as he finally landed on the ground in a crouch behind her, not knowing what had happened he quickly straightened and moved up behind her where he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his chest, instinctively trying to comfort her. 2 2 2 2 2She felt the presence behind her before she felt the touch, when strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her against a warm hard body she felt herself calm. Something about this being made her feel safe, and she pushed back farther against them as one of the wolves took another step towards her.The only thought running through her mind was that he had come for her, just like he always did. She turned in his grasp so that she could look up at his face and beg him to take them away from this place but her breath froze in her lunges when the face behind her was not the one she had expected, but one she knew none the less. Her breath came back in a rush as she released a blood curdling scream and felt the world start to blur around her.The last thing she remembered before her world went black around her was the echo of his voice giving one chilling command.“Eat you’re fill.” 2 2 2 2 2Koga’s ears were ringing as he cradled his mates suddenly limp body close to his chest. He had no idea as of yet what had set her off but he did know on thing.
She was afraid of him.He was sure that their connection should have caused her to recognize him, even in her panicked state. And yet when she had seen his face it had scared her even more. He knew because he felt her emotions spike just before she fainted. But that would have to wait until she woke to figure out her reaction, now he wanted to know what had started the whole thing.Turning to his people who had gathered closer in their concern for his mate he growled threateningly.
“Who wants to tell me what the hell happened here? Who frightened her?”Hakkaku immediately stepped forward.“Koga, I don’t know what scared her, she seemed fine at first, when I went to check on her she was standing by the ledge looking over the valley.” The subordinate pointed towards behind where Koga now was. “She was very calm when I invited her to follow me so we could get her something to eat while we waited for you.”
The Mohawk haired wolf then looked at the group around him. “I don’t know what happened; some of them came to greet her as well, along with a few wolves.” He indicated the ones still standing at sentry duty up on the rocks above them. “Then all of a sudden she seemed to start freaking out, we tried to ask what was wrong but she wouldn’t answer and started backing up, then you came.” He finished with a perplexed frown.Koga frowned as well, the explanation didn’t explain anything. With a resigned sigh he pulled her sword from her sash and handed it to Hakkaku before picking her up bridle style and headed back into the main den.It was obvious that he was going to have to wait until she awoke once again before he got any answers. But what also confused him was that she had not reached for her weapon even though he was sure she felt that her life was threatened. Perhaps it was only an ornament and she really had no use for it or, had no idea how to use it.That thought disturbed him; if she could not defend herself it would make his job harder, especially when she was heavy with their pups. But then he had seen with his own eyes what she had done to several potential suitors, and that was with her bare hands. Perhaps it had only been the influence of her heat that had forced her to defend herself? He just didn’t know, and now all he could do was wait again.
Sighing heavily he laid her down on their bed and removed his own sword and armor before laying down on his side and pulling her back against him.“Is there anything we can do to help?” Hakkaku asked as he came forward to set her sword down beside them.“Right now all we can do is wait for her to wake up I think.” Koga replied. He noticed that a large number of his pack had followed him into the cave and were now taking seats around the den as they prepared to join him in his vigil.Closing his eyes to hide his frustration, Koga buried his face in her hair as he tightened his hold, in a effort to make her feel safe as he started to purr softly even as he struggled to understand the one question still burning inside his mind. Why was she afraid of HIM?2 2 2 2 2 2Once again the sound of rushing water was the first thing she became aware of, the second was that something was wrapped around her waist holding her against something that was hard yet warm.Years of training, not to mention personal experience, kept her from bolting upright or even opening her eyes. Consciously she kept her breathing slow and even as she used her keen ears and nose to try to determine just where she was and what was holding her captive, it certainly wasn’t any form of shackles she had ever come across. Both of her senses told her that she was in the same cave she had been in last time she had woke, the realization caused her heart to pick up its pace. There had been wolves there, LOTS of wolves, the one creature on the face of the earth that despite her best efforts still scared her out of her mind. The very thought that some of those beasts might very well be staring at her at that very moment caused her to forget her previous caution as her eyes flew open to survey her surroundings. She barely managed to stifle a whimper as she spotted three of the terrifying beasts laying not a stone’s throw away from her position, they appeared to be asleep but all of them were facing in her direction and she knew that if one of them were to wake it would see her immediately.Without her even realizing it her body started to tremble as her gaze darted round the large cave in search of an escape route, it appeared that she was in the same bed she had been in earlier but it was obviously later in the day, probably almost dusk in fact if the dim light inside the large cavern was any indication.Belatedly she noticed that the den was now almost fully occupied by more than just the demons who had greeted her earlier, which meant that she had very little chance of getting to the cave entrance without attracting attention. It never entered her mind that these people might be as friendly as they had seemed when she had first seen them, in her mind if they were associated with wolves they were a danger to her.Her plans for escape were side tracked when the restraint around her waist tightened, pulling her back into the solid wall behind her, at the same time a low thrumming sounded in her ears and unbidden she felt her body start to relax, the fear start to lessen. A sense of safety started to overtake her being and she felt herself melting back into what a part of her mind recognized as a warm hard body, the movement also brought a strong wave of scent over her that had her eyes drifting closed as she inhaled, the heady aroma had her completely distracted from the fact that only a few feet away lay several of her worst nightmares. Her head turned back in an effort to get another whiff of the intoxicating scent, she had the strongest urge roll over and bury her face into the very source, in fact she wanted to taste it, roll it off her tongue and compare the scent and the taste. She shifted herself intent on doing just that, at the same time she felt the body behind her move as well. Her eyes fluttered open as she came to rest on her back, nearly black eyes clashed with sky blue. The intensity of the gaze now looking down on her momentarily held her enthralled, she felt as if she could simply drown in the deep blue orbs. The deep thrumming sound turned into a husky growl that caused her to blink several times and forced her to focus on the face hovering mere inches above her own. It took a fraction of a second for her to recognize that face, and to react.2 2 2Koga was roused from the light slumber he had fallen into as soon as he felt his mate begin to stir, he had felt the fear rushing through her almost instantly, he didn’t know what had triggered it this time as she didn’t seem aware of him as of yet.So he had started to purr again, he wasn’t sure if it would help, the emotions coming off of the female in his arms bordered on sheer terror. He was relieved when it seemed to work, she started to calm and then to his surprise the feelings coming off of her took a dramatic switch. His body instantly reacted to what he was reading off of her, when she turned towards him he was sure that her reaction to him earlier had been a miss-understanding.And then she screamed, the high pitch nearly causing his ears to bleed. An instant later her fist connected with his face sending him over backwards from the power of her blow. He landed on his backside and it took him a moment for both his eyes to stop watering and for the ringing in his ears to subside. One thing was of certain he decided as he gave his head a light shake to clear it, if the female had that much power behind a blow when the position she had been in gave no room for leverage, that meant he would have to watch himself if she ever took a real swing at him.Once his vision cleared he was greeted with the sight of his mate slowly crawling backwards, away from him, her eyes wide and focused completely on him. He didn’t even need their connection to tell him that she was terrified; the look on her face said it all. Apparently he had been wrong about her not fearing him.Slowly he moved to a kneeling position, trying his best not to seem threatening. “There is nothing to fear, I will not harm you.” He kept his voice low, much in the same tone as his purring had been.By this time most of the dens occupants were awake, mostly thanks to scream the female had emitted. Koga saw Ginta carefully approaching from behind the female, followed closely by several wolves as well as other clan members.“Is something wrong?” The second asked quietly. The question aimed at Koga. The females head whipped around at the sound of his voice and she uttered a stifled shriek as she spun around and madly scrambled backwards until the wall of the cave stopped her retreat.Koga was at a loss as to what to do when her eyes darted back and forth from himself to Ginta several times. She looked like a trapped deer and the Okami prince lifted a hand to halt the forward movement of his subordinate.“I’m sorry if I startled you,” Ginta apologized profusely dropping to one knee and bowing his head. The others behind him did the same, none of the clan wanting to make a bad impression on their new princess. “I only wished to be of assistance.”Koga was well within his rights to punish his underlings for being so careless but he was too busy watching his mate’s actions, it took him a moment to realize that she wasn’t actually looking at Ginta as he had first thought, her eyes were in fact glued to the wolves standing at the demons side. The prince frowned at that, was it because the wolves were still standing? Or was she afraid of them as well? The lead wolf, a large male took another step forward, his head lowered in a none threatening manner, his tail wagging slightly in greeting. The response from his mate was instant, she pressed her body further against the rough rock behind her, a whimper escaping her throat and she actually seemed to be scooting back towards him. When the carnivore took a second step, whining in concern, Koga was sure she was going to start hyperventilating. With a low grunt the Okami prince stopped the wolf in its tracks; the big creature turned its head towards his leader in silent query. With a tip of his head Koga sent the four legged wolves back behind Ginta and the group with him. The female’s body slowly relaxed, but only marginally, her attention was once again on Koga and the Prince had to keep himself from growling in frustration. He could still feel her fear of him, it wasn’t nearly as great as that she seemed to have for his wolves, but it was still there and it was eating at his gut. “There is nothing to fear little one, I won’t let anything harm you.” He could feel her uncertainty but she did shift a couple inches closer to him, still glancing between him, Ginta’s group and the wolves that were barely visible behind the demons. He remained where he was and did his best to keep his body relaxed and none threatening, when all he really wanted to do was drag her into his arms and hold her until she once again felt like she had for those few moments in his arms before she had seen his face.“My name is Koga, this is my clans den.” He offered her a soft smile. “What’s your name?” She moved an inch closer and her attention was now almost entirely focused on him. Her hesitance was obvious, even to the other demons who still remained kneeling a short distance from the large fur pallet that was the prince’s bed. But she also seemed to be a little more relaxed.“R…Rin, my name is Rin.” Her voice was barely above a whisper.Koga’s smile widened, it was a start. “Rin, it is an honor.” He bowed his head slightly. “I have been looking forward to meeting you.” He held a hand out to her, hoping that she would take it now that they had been introduced. “Please come talk with me, there is no reason to fear me.”2 2 2Rin was confused, she knew she recognized this demon from her childhood when he had killed another demon just outside of her little hut and then turned his wolves on her and the rest of the village. But yet she felt as if she should know him from somewhere else, and she was getting the strangest urge to throw herself into his arms. Half of her feelings made sense while the other half didn’t. It was making her head hurt. She stared at his offered hand for several long moments, trying to decide what to do, she was even in conflict over that, her training and logical brain told her to slice the appendage off and attempt a getaway, while some before unknown part of her wanted to bring the large but elegant looking hand to her lips so she could suckle on his fingers. She felt her face flame at the mere thought of doing something so ……. So brazen. As she struggled to understand what was wrong with her she suddenly became aware of the fact that her back was pressed up against the stone wall of the den. She inwardly cringed as her vivid imagination supplied her with a picture of what she must look like, plastering herself up against the barrier like some kind of coward. Lord Sesshomaru would be livid if he saw her acting in such an unbecoming manner.Taking several deep breaths she forced herself to remember the lessons drilled into her by her guardian. Show no fear being the first. Moving carefully with as much grace as her unorthodox position would allow she pushed herself away from the wall, she ignored the offered hand and instead only moved far enough that she had room to kneel primly on the lush fur bed. Carefully folding her hands in her lap she did her best to calm her nerves and appear unaffected by those surrounding her.The reminder of her training gave her confidence, she was the ward of the Aristocratic Assassin, had been trained by him and she has far from being weak herself. She was still nervous about the wolves presence, but she had a feeling that even though he haunted her nightmares. Koga, as he had introduced himself would not let them harm her, at least not at this time. She wondered if he knew who she was and planned on keeping her hostage in an attempt to use her as a pawn against her Lord. Her mind raced through a number of scenarios, if he was in fact planning to use her against Sesshomaru he was in for a rude surprise. Her Lord had informed her years before that now that she was a demon, and able to defend herself he would no longer come to her rescue, nor would he allow her to be used against him. She shuddered inwardly at the memory of the day he had told her he would as soon kill her himself then allow her to be used as a pawn.Deciding that she would do well to play ignorant until she knew for sure what Koga planned to do with her, she took a deep breath and prepared to ask how she had come to be in his den.“You must be very hungry Rin.” Koga remarked before she could speak. “Do you have any requests?”The question caught the young woman off guard, and as if in response to his words her stomach chose that moment to make itself heard. The loud grumbling sound caused her to blush. “Anything is fine thank you.” She murmured ducking her head to hide her heated cheeks.
Through the curtain of her hair she saw Koga motion for one of the kneeling demons to go fetch her something. To the others he spoke in a series of growls and woofs, it sounded a great deal like the language of the Inu to Rin’s ears, she wasn’t sure, but it sounded like he was sending them off to do something. A moment later the rest of the demons bowed to her then got to their feet and moved away, in fact they seemed to be herding a number of their kind further away from the bed she was sitting on.Koga was very pleased that she finally seemed to be calming down, although the speed at which she had done so had him a little wary, especially since he could still feel her anxiety. Having given up on trying to get her to take his hand, he instead sent for her food before telling the other to move away so that he could talk to her more privately, not that anything was ever completely private in an okami den.But he knew he had done the right thing when he felt her relax a bit more.
“Might I inquire how I came to be here Koga-san? The last thing I remember was feeling quite ill as I traveled.” Her soft voice was like music to his ears, but her question had him unsettled. Was it possible that she did not recollect their mating? He knew that his own memories were rather foggy, but only because his beast had taken over. From what he remembered she had not had that problem. And the okami prince had never heard of a female that did not remember what had happened during their heat cycles.Choosing his words carefully, so as not to alarm her if in fact she did not remember. Koga watched her carefully as he spoke. “I was on patrol with some of my pack when we found you at a spring within our territory.” He cocked his head slightly, waiting for her reaction. “You were in heat.”Rin’s brows furrowed as she regarded him with her dark chocolate eyes. “Is that what the sickness that plagued me is called? I have not heard of it before, I wonder how I caught it.” Her eyes turned questioning as for the first time she took and held his gaze. “Is it a common ailment in your territory?”Koga nearly choked, how could she not know what he was talking about? She couldn’t be that young, or she never would have come into season. As his mind grasped desperately for a way to explain it to her he suddenly wondered if she was an orphan, it would explain her ignorance and with the warring humans running amuck the last fifty years or so, there were more then a few demon children who had had to raise themselves.“All demoness’ go through heat cycles when they come of age.” Koga tried to explain as gently as possible. “Did your parents or guardian not explain this to you?” Okay, he admitted to himself, he was chickening out, but he really didn’t want to have to explain the complexity of a females breeding cycle if he didn’t have to. He was hoping that she had been told at one point but had simply forgotten momentarily.Rin dropped her eyes as she frowned, she appeared to be carefully searching her memories. “I do not recall Master Jaken nor Lord Sesshomaru mentioning such a thing in my training.” She finally confessed. “But perhaps because I was not born a demon they didn’t think it was necessary.”Koga’s brain was struggling to focus on the last part of her statement, but all his stunned mind could grasp was that she had spoke of the Lord of the West as if she was very close to him.“Sesshomaru, you know him?” He spoke before he could get his tongue and brain reconnected properly. She gave him a rather puzzled look as if she expected him to already know what she was telling him. “Yes, Lord Sesshomaru is my guardian. Until such time that he takes a mate, I am his heir.”Koga wasn’t sure if he should laugh or cry, he was still a little too stunned to do either at that moment in time. By some strange twist of fate, he had mated Sesshomaru’s heir. With a groan he buried his face in his hands, he was a dead wolf. He could only imagine how angry the demon Lord would be when he learned of this. No doubt if he had made his ward his heir he had great plans for her, she was probably even promised to another male.Momentarily forgetting that she was afraid of this male, Rin inched a bit closer to him, he seemed upset and she felt a sudden urge to comfort him. It didn’t make sense to her, but the more they talked the calmer she had become. “Is something wrong Koga-san?”The wolf was surprised to hear the concern in her voice, lifting his head he attempted to smile at her. “Something tells me that Sesshomaru is not going to be very happy with me. I have not seen him in years, but I doubt he has changed that much.”Rin cocked her head. “You know my Lord?”He nodded, “We were once temporary allies in a fight against a creature called Naraku. But only because we all had our own vendetta against the monster.”Rin’s eyes widened at the mention on Naraku, she remembered vividly that last battle, she had been so worried about her Lord’s safety that she had snuck away from Ah-Un and witnessed the fight for herself. It had been horrific and awe inspiring all at the same time.Since Koga had seemed surprised to hear of her connection with the Lord of the West Rin decided to ask out right if he was planning on holding her for ransom or if he had other plans for her. But before she could pose the question one of the demons he had sent away earlier, returned with a wooden tray which he set down between the two.Rin’s stomach growled again at the sight of the fruit and roots it contained, however her appetite was curbed slightly when she saw the raw meat sharing the platter. “We were unsure of what you would like Princess.” The nameless demon explained bowing low. “I hope there is something there you like.”Before she could answer a wolf peeked its head around from behind the server, how it had gotten so close without her noticing didn’t register with the female. She gave a startled yelp as she scrambled backwards again, only this time her path took her closer to Koga rather then farther away.“What are you doing here?” Koga demanded of the four legged pack member. His mate was once again afraid, it had happened so fast, with just the sight of the wolf which made the prince suspect that her fear was not just because of her current situation. The wolf whined out a reply, it was young and had merely been curious to see the new alpha female. Koga growled out a warning to stay away until otherwise instructed and the animal slunk away with its tail between its legs. The server moved away as well, not wanting to get in his prince’s way.Turning to his mate Koga tried his best not to let any of the frustration he was feeling show in his voice or manner, she had just started to relax and now he had to start all over again. Although he had to wonder how it was that someone who was the ward and heir of the Western Lands could be afraid of one of his wolves.“Rin, there is nothing to fear. I give you my word that none of my pack will harm you in any way.”The trembling female looked up at him, her lips trembling as tears threatened to spill from her eyes, her earlier bravado having been blown away by the incident.Slowly so as not to startle her Koga inched closer, kneeling close to her side although he didn’t touch her as he wanted to. “Why are you so afraid of me and my pack?” He whispered.
Rin shuddered at the memories his question raised. But despite the fact that he was part of the reason for those memories she once again had the strangest urge to move closer to him, it was as if something was telling her that he would protect her no matter what. She had never had this kind of feeling before, not even from Sesshomaru who had guarded her for years.“Please tell me.” He entreated softly, leaning in just a little closer.Bowing her head so that she didn’t have to look into his eyes Rin struggled to put her fears into words. “I…When I was a child, I…..I …was killed by wolves.”She felt his body stiffen beside her but she still couldn’t bring herself to look at him. “They attacked my whole village.” She felt a tear escape and trickle down her face. It was the first time she had ever allowed herself to cry over that day.Koga felt like he had been punched. He couldn’t see wolves attacking a demon village without being directed to by an okami demon. “They attacked you randomly?”He saw her shake her head. “I saw their leader give the order.”His hands tightened into fists, it was quite possible that the one responsible was no longer among the living, Naraku had wiped out many of his people before the crazy hanyou had been destroyed. But if he wasn’t dead, Koga planned on rectifying that immediately. “Would you know this demon if you saw him?”He wanted to pull her back when she nodded before she moved away, but he got the feeling from her that that motion would be less then welcome. When she finally lifted her eyes to meet his he got a strong feeling of foreboding.
“It was you.”2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2Inu-Yasha felt his mate gently snap his mouth closed as the messenger bowed and left their private quarters, he couldn’t help it. It wasn’t everyday he got word that news like this. “You have got to be kidding me!”“Inu-Yasha, be nice.” Ayame admonished gently so as not to disturb the baby sleeping in her arms. The Inu Hanyou couldn’t help but laugh at his mate. “What? I can’t believe that Koga just up and mated some female he doesn’t even know. Its freaking hilarious.”The redheaded wolf just shook her head. “You heard the runner, she was in heat. I’m actually surprised that he hasn’t taken a mate before now.”The silver haired male snorted as he lounged back on his elbows beside his mate on their bed. “I can, the stinky bastard has been pining over Kagome since she had to go home, I think personally he’s afraid of being with just one woman and used her as an excuse to avoid every female that went after him in the last thirty years.” “That is not true Inu, you know what it is like to love someone more than anything in the world. He was just waiting to find someone he could feel the same way about.” Ayame defended, as she moved to the edge of the fur pallet to lay their sleeping daughter into her little nest beside it.The hanyou was quiet for a few moments as he watched his mate caring for their youngest, the other children were already in bed and asleep, even though the sun hadn’t completely set yet. It was true, he knew how much the okami prince had loved his best friend, and he knew what it was like to lose someone without any closure. But to mate with someone you didn’t even know, it just wasn’t like Koga.“I think I’m going to take a quick run.” The hanyou informed his mate as he reached for his white shirt and shrugged onto it. Ayame now wore his fire-rat kimono as he had no need for its protection any longer.“You’re not going to go tease him are you?” The demoness asked, giving him a disapproving look.“I might a little.” Inu-Yasha admitted, tucking in his top. “But I’m more curious to find out what was going through his head, and if this female can be trusted.”“You don’t trust Koga’s judgment?” Ayame followed him as he stood and headed through their private den into the communal one.Inu-Yasha sighed heavily. “He mated a female in the middle of a heat cycle without knowing who she was Ayame, Judgment had nothing to do with it, I just want to know more about her okay.”The redhead nodded her understanding. “Be careful.” She raised up on her tiptoes to place a kiss on his cheek. “And be nice.” She warned.Inu-Yasha wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her flush against him with a grin. “I can’t promise anything.” Before she could admonish him again she captured her lips in a kiss that left them both breathless.“I’ll only be a few hours, get some rest.” He winked at her and gave her rump a light squeeze before stepping out of their embrace. “You’re going to need it.”Ayame chuckled. “You expect me to sleep after a promise like that?”“Nope.” He quipped giving her another wink before trotting towards the entrance of the main den. With a shake of her head Ayame turned and headed back inside her private quarters to check her offspring one more time before heading to her own bed.2 2 2 2Koga felt like an icy hand had grabbed a hold of his heart and was squeezing the life out of it. He sat stunned into silence as he stared into the tear filled eyes of his mate, who had just declared that he had once been responsible for giving the order to have her killed. His mind raced in an effort to remember when he might have done such a thing, it was true that in his younger days when he had first become leader of his clan he had been very ambitious and had spread his share of grief before meeting up with Kagome and Inu-Yasha.
But try as he might, he couldn’t remember attacking a village of demons with his pack, he was sure he hadn’t. Something like that was dangerous and only attempted during an all out war between clans, attacking females and offspring was beneath most warriors.“Are you certain? I have never attacked a demon village.” He didn’t want to call her an outright liar, because the feelings conveyed to him through their mating bond told him that she believed what she was saying. Perhaps it was merely a case of mistaken identity.
Rin shook her head. “It was a human village; I lived on the outskirts as a child. I saw you kill another demon that had been in my hut and you took a jewel shard from him.” Her lips started to tremble again as her voice turned wobbly. “Then you said you were leaving….. and told the….the… wolves to eat… their fill.” The last few words were barely above a whisper.Koga couldn’t believe what he was hearing; he knew exactly what she was talking about. That had been the same village where he had first met Inu-Yasha. But what had a demon child been doing living in a human village? Then he remembered something she had said just before revealing that she was Sesshomaru’s heir.‘Since I wasn’t born a demon.’ What did she mean by that? It couldn’t be that she had been changed, could it? He knew that it was possible if the right magic was preformed.“You were human?” He wasn’t sure what else to say just then, what did one say to someone whose village you destroyed nearly forty years before?
She nodded, dislodging several tears in the process. “That is when I met Lord Sesshomaru, he brought me back to life after…… after I was killed.”Koga leaned back, not wanting to crowd her. All of her reactions now made perfect sense, but on top of that, he now had to try to wrap his mind around the fact that the human hater Sesshomaru had taken a human child and turned her into a demoness as well as his heir.
Taking a deep breath he decided the only thing he could do was try to deal with this situation one step at a time. So first things first. “I wish I could deny that my pack attacked your home. But I do remember that day, if for another reason.” His blue eyes caught and held her dark ones. “I am sorry for what happened, those were the days before I learned that all life is precious, even that of humans.”She blinked up at him, clearly unsure of what he was talking about.“I cannot undo what I’ve done in the past, but please believe me when I tell you that none of my pack would ever touch you now. You are safe here, I give you my word.” She still didn’t look convinced so he added. “We no longer feed on humans either, it is now against the law for an Okami to do so.”
Finally he felt her relax, just a fraction. So he felt it was safe to continue talking, to ask some more questions. Now that he thought about it he vaguely remembered a small human girl with Sesshomaru on the few occasions they had crossed paths, including the final battle with Naraku. “Was it Sesshomaru that transformed you?”Rin nodded, wiping her nose on her sleeve in a very un-lady like manner. “When I was about nineteen, he said he wanted someone around that he could talk to, because Master Jaken was too annoying and the rest of the court could not be trusted.”
Koga had a sneaking suspicion that there had been more to the demon lord’s decision to perform such a dangerous ceremony. And looking closely at the beautiful female kneeling in front of him, the okami was pretty certain what that reason was.Again he felt her calming even more as they talked so he decided to continue to do so, as long as it didn’t upset her again. “Do you know how you were transformed? What spell was used?”Rin shrugged, her eyes dropping from his to glance at the food tray and then quickly away. “He said that he gave me some of his power, I don’t recall him saying more than that.”Koga nodded his understanding as he picked up the food tray and brought it over to offer her some. He was pretty sure he knew how it had been done, it had to be similar to a spell his own father had told him about when he was still young. He also realized that the fact that she had not been born a demon was probably the reason that none of his clan had been able to figure out what kind of demon she was.“So how long have you been a demon?” He asked as he watched her hesitantly take a mushroom and an apple off the tray and bite into them with remarkable restraint since he knew she must be starving. She looked thoughtful as she chewed for a few moments. “About twenty-one years, seven months, twelve days.”He raised a brow at her. “About?” He couldn’t help but tease, hoping to put her even more at ease. “That was very precise to be ‘about’.”“Lord Sesshomaru demands specifics. He says that not knowing could be deadly.”Koga nodded his agreement, although it sounded to him like the Inu lord was a little too rigid in his rules and training to suit the okami prince. Not sure what else to say at that moment the two fell silent as Rin ate what was in her hands, and accepted a few more pieces of fruit from the tray.
The wolf prince lifted a skeptical brow at her when she signaled that she was done. “You don’t want any meat?” He knew that her body should be craving the extra protein from the raw substance, both because she was recovering from a heat and because she was now breeding.“I don’t like it raw.” She told him meekly. Avoiding his gaze as she dusted off her hands before folding them carefully in her lap.“It is good for you though.” He argued gently. “You just went through a heat and your……..” He paused, suddenly unsure if he should tell her she was breeding, he knew some females didn’t like it when their mate found our first. Or at least when the male made the mistake of mentioning it first, since most Okami males could tell almost instantly if they had impregnated their mate. And because Rin had not been born with the instincts of a demoness it was possible that it would take her some time to figure out what the changes in her body meant. “You’re body could use the nutrients as it recovers.”Rin gave him a look that was both thoughtful and doubtful at the same time. “You never did tell me what kind of a sickness that was, or how I got it.” She pointed out.Which reminded Koga that she may not even realize that they were mated. Clearing his throat he scratched the back of his head as he tried to come up with a subtle way of explaining it to her.
“It’s not a sickness, all females go into heat when they are old enough to breed.” He felt himself flushing slightly as he struggled for the right words. “It means that your body is…. Was.” He stumbled to a halt before rushing through the last part.“Itmeansyou’rereadytoconceivepups.”
Rin’s eyes widened when she figured to what this male was telling her. As she thought about his words her hands moved unbidden to rest on her flat stomach. When Sesshomaru had given her the option of becoming a demon he had explained that she might never be able to bare offspring, it was one of the risks she had accepted in order to stay by her lords side. And considering what Koga had just told her, she now understood why her guardian had never thought it necessary to explain to her what a heat cycle was.So did this mean that she was in fact capable of having children? She had always wanted some of her own, but never dared believe she would be able to. As quickly as her hopes had risen they fell back to the earth, having children, or pups as Koga and Sesshomaru called them, was not possible without a mate, and she was not a female that any self respecting demon would take as a mate. And finding a human was out of the question now that she had transformed. She mentally kicked herself for thinking such a thing was possible.Koga sat quietly as he felt the emotions within his mates body bounce from one extreme to another. He wished he knew what she was thinking just then, it would make this awkward situation a lot easier. He didn’t know how to proceed from here, how was he supposed to tell a female that he had barely met that they were mated, especially since she was still more than a little afraid of him.“Would you like to go for a walk?” He asked suddenly, surprising them both. “I just thought you might like to stretch your legs and um, get some fresh air.” He explained when she gave him an uncertain look. After a moment’s thought she nodded carefully, she really needed to relieve herself, and it would also give her a chance to get out of the den, and perhaps get away from this place. Koga got to his feet first, retrieving his sword from beside the bed before picking up hers as well and then turning to offer her a hand up. He pretended not to notice her hesitation or the way her eyes dropped from the hand he held out to her and her sword several times before she slowly placed her delicate hand into his much larger one. He felt the connection instantly, it felt like a flood of molten heat racing up his arm to wrap around him, heart and soul. From the startled gasp from the female still on the ground it was obvious that she felt it as well. Before she could think to pull away, he pulled her to her feet with a little more force than necessary, causing her to sway unsteadily as she gained her feet which gave him the excuse to wrap his free arm around her waist and pull her snuggly up against his body.Rin was so startled her head snapped up, but before she could do or say anything she found herself drowning in a pair of vivid blue eyes. She felt her breath hitch as heat seared her entire body everywhere it touched his. She noted absently that her hands were resting on his bare chest, and without realizing it, her fingers started moving in light kneading motion.A low rumbling growl issued from Koga’s throat as her claws tickled his skin, he felt his body start to respond to her caress and wanted nothing more than to lay her down and relearn the contours of her body, without his beast clouding his senses. Standing with her like that, her scent surrounded him like a blanket, reinforcing the fact that she was his, despite her fears and the problems that would cause; she carried both his scent and his pups. He wasn’t going to let her go, no matter what.2 2 2 2 2So how many of you guessed it was Rin?
I planned on making this chapter a lot longer, but when I finally got to this part it just seemed to want to end here.So there you are for now. Let me know your thoughts. Do give me any suggestions you might have, as there are a few things I am still trying to hash out.
