AN: So this is mostly a pointless chapter the just helps the story along. Sorry I haven’t updated sooner, but I’ve been terribly busy. Thanks to everyone who’s reviewed. I really do appreciate it.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Inuyasha, and I get absolutely no profit from this, except for the joy of writing.
Kagome and Inuyasha returned to her apartment relatively unscathed. Inuyasha had spent the trip back in obstinate silence, and continued to not speak even after they entered the kitchen. Kagome poured a glass of orange juice for him to drink while waiting for the pizza to finish cooking in the oven. She opened a bottle of wine for herself, because as of now, she felt she deserved it.
The remainder of the night passed in the same manner. There were motions but no words. Kagome finished off half the bottle of wine while searching for various amenities for Inuyasha’s overnight stay, however long it would last. A pillow, blanket, and another oddly matched pair of clothes for the next day made their way onto the couch. Inuyasha blankly watched her from his place at the kitchen table.
A toothbrush. He’d need a toothbrush, but she’d have to buy that for him tomorrow. Oh yeah. A comb, shaving cream, and a razor. He definitely wasn’t using her razor. Better yet he won’t go near a razor at all. She hadn’t known him that long, but she wasn’t going to take her chances on him with sharp objects.
How had she forgotten all these things about guys? It hadn’t really been that long since she’d been with a man. Then all the other things came back to her, too. Things almost everyone used.
Underwear.
No freaking way was she going to buy him underwear. Maybe he could just go al natural. As much as she hated to admit it, she wouldn’t mind the prospect. Clean thoughts Kagome, clean thoughts.
Clothes. How was she supposed to buy him clothes? She barely knew anything about women’s sizes, let alone men’s. Tomorrow. She’d worry about all of this tomorrow.
Instructing Inuyasha to sleep on the couch and not touch anything on pain of death, Kagome escaped to her bedroom with what was left of her wine and slipped into a fitful sleep.
Kagome awoke in the middle of the night with a hand on her back and a voice in her ear hissing her name.
“Kagome…hey…get up.”
“Huh?” An hour of sleep may have dulled her wits, but it didn’t take her long to realize who was lightly shaking her shoulder. “What are you doing in here?”
Inuyasha crouched down beside her bed, his face mere inches from her own. He looked very tired himself, with an expression of distress on his face.
“What happened? Are you all right? You didn’t mess with the stove did you? I told you not to mess w-” Her complaints were silenced by his hand over her mouth. His scent invaded her nose, causing her to calm for some unknown reason.
“Where’s your bathroom?” he asked as he removed his hand. “I really got to go.”
“Oh.” She hadn’t expected that reply. “Uh…it’s right over there. I’ll show you.”
She led him to the door just beyond her room. Maneuvering him inside, she asked him if he needed her to show him how to use anything to which he promptly and somewhat nervously said no.
“Then I’ll leave you to it.”
Going back to bed was nearly impossible. Even the alcohol she’d consumed earlier didn’t help. It must have come to her though, because the next thing she knew, a soft feminine voice was urging her to wake.
Sango sat at the corner of her bed, her hands on the spine of Kagome’s back.
“Kagome, get up. Hey, get up.” She lightly rocked her back in a motion that was actually soothing instead of forceful, but Kagome sat up in earnest anyway.
“What are you doing here?” Her voice was still laced with sleep and maybe some of the alcohol she’d had earlier.
“I couldn’t get to sleep last night because I kept thinking.”
“About what?”
“Inuyasha,” she said. Kagome was caught of guard. She’d almost thought she’d dreamed him up along with all the other odd things that had passed through her head that night.
“Oh God, him.”
“You didn’t forget about him did you?” Sango looked at her in consternation.
“No,” she sighed, “I didn’t forget him. I think I thought I made him up.”
Sango smiled a little at her as she turned away. “No, you didn’t make him up. He’s talking to Miroku right now.”
“Miroku’s in there?” Kagome hadn’t seen Miroku for quite a while and after the last time they’d seen each other, she wasn’t sure she could show her face to him. Wanting to be friendly she asked, “How are you two doing anyway?”
“As wonderful as true love will allow.”
“That bad, huh?”
“Don’t be cute.” Sango rolled her eyes and sat on the chair at the other end of the room. “You know, you’ve been worrying me lately. I know you’ve been lonely, I guess I just hoped it wasn’t going to be this bad.”
Kagome didn’t want to talk about this right now, so she attempted to change the subject. “What was it that you were thinking about Inuyasha for?”
“I can see you’re not going to cooperate.”
“What time is it anyway?”
Sango gave out a groan of aggravation. “It’s seven thirty.”
“Why are you over here so early?”
“Because this is important. I shouldn’t have let you leave last night without mentioning it,” Sango replied looking at her seriously. “When you left last night, we made up a last name for Inuyasha right?”
“Yeah.” She couldn’t see where Sango was going with this, and was almost too tired to care.
“We gave him a last name, but think of all the other things we didn’t or can’t give him. A birth date, a social security number and God only know what else.”
“Oh…” What was she suppose to say to this? They had forgotten so much last night. This was going to be so much more complicated that she thought.
“And what about clothes? I mean, I know you tried. But let’s not make the poor boy run around looking like he’s colorblind. Not to mention a fashion victim.”
Kagome moaned into her pillow to muffle the sound. “Man, this is going to be expensive.”
“Not entirely. I was thinking that you and I could go out for a while. Of course you’ll have to skip class today, but you said it wasn’t a hard class anyway. Miroku can take Inuyasha out shopping. I’ve already told him every thing.” At the look on Kagome’s face she was quick to add, “Don’t worry, I trust Miroku more than anyone. He’ll go mostly to thrift shops and maybe J.C. Penney’s. We’ll help you out.”
Kagome moved over towards her friend and threw her hands around her neck. Her face buried itself into her shoulder and she whispered, “Thank you so much.”
