I have taken certain liberties with some of the elements. Such as the power of the Ten-siega, the
God of the Dog Demons, and Kaede and Kagome’s Miko powers. No flames please. I already
know I’ve stretched the truth past it’s limits.
Humble regards,AikouKibaBrothers
Chapter 9 As he approached the bed, the Ten-siega began to shudder wildly inside it’s sheath, making
his hand and wrist ache as he struggled to hang on to it. At first, Inuyasha wasn’t sure what was
causing the reaction within the fang until he recalled his own sword was lying somewhere near. The
two fangs always reacted this way when in close proximaties to each other. Inside his heart, he
began to pray.
‘Kami-sama, help me. Give me the strength to hold my brother’s sword and the will to
wield it’s power so I can bring his soul back from the other world. He was not meant to enter the
gates so soon, and I cannot bear to be left here alone without him. Onegai, Kami...if I cannot
bring him back, then let the strength of the Ten-siega destroy me so that I may follow where he
has gone.’ “Uncle Inu?” Rin tugged on her uncle’s hakama, looking up at his blank face as he stared at
the supine figure on the bed. “Are you gonna use the sword? Are you?” “Hai, Rin-chan. I just pray it isn’t too late.” “It’s never too late, Uncle Inu. Sesshoumaru-sama said once that the Ten-siega can bring
anyone back to life as long as you have at least their bones.” “Did he?” Inu wondered at that moment why Sesshou had never tried to bring their father
back to life? His bones were sealed beyond the Black Pearl, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t reach
them, so why hadn’t he done that? The hanyou was confused. Perhaps the thought had not occurred
to his brother since inheriting the fang. ‘That’s stupid,’ he thought, shaking his head. ‘Of course
he’s thought about it. He just didn’t do it? I wonder why?’ “Hai, he told me that.” The little girl sounded so hopeful. Her voice was still tremulous and
her face showed the evidence of her recent tears. “Please bring him back.” She whispered, hiding
her face in the hanyou’s stomach. “We need him.” “I know, Rin-chan. I know we need him.” Inuyasha tenderly stroked the little girl’s hair, the
fang still shuddering in his other hand. “All I can do is try, but I think you should go out while I
do.” “Iie!” She wailed, wrapping her arms tight around his waist. “I won’t go. I won’t.” “But little one, if it doesn’t work, I’ll be dead with Sesshoumaru. I don’t want you to see
that. Understand?” “But...but why would you die? The Ten-siega won’t hurt you. You’re Sesshoumaru-sama’s brother, and you love him. The sword won’t hurt you. I know it won’t.” Her brown eyes
were huge with conviction and entreaty. “Please, Uncle Inu. Use the sword.” “I...” Inuyasha looked at the fang, lifted it up, and grasped the sheath with his opposite hand.
“Kami-sama,” he whispered fervently. “Give me the strength.” And he pulled the sword free, the
sacred metal glistening in the pale light of the room. Pain lanced up his arm as Ten-siega refused to
recognize him as a worthy wielder. “Nnnyyaahhh!” The scream was one of primeval pain. Agony at its purest level. Every
nerve ending in the hanyou’s body burst into a flame of excruciating torture. Rin stumbled away
from him as he lurched to the side, throwing his body against the wall, desperately trying to hang
onto the sword. “Nnoooo...” He cried, as the scent of burnt flesh filled his nostrils and he felt the
skin of his hand crisp along the hilt. “Kami-sama... Help meeee!” Rin screamed, the sound echoing off the chambers walls as great, white bolts of lightening
laced outward from the Ten-siega to surround her uncle, engulfing him. “Uncle Inu?!” Her cries
rose to fill the room, and then were dragged into the hallway and down the stairs as the lightening
spread outward to surround the castle and everyone inside. *************** Kaede hurried as fast as her aged legs would carry her. It was only a little further to her hut
and Kagome. The feelings of wrongness had intensified to the point that her heart felt as if it were
going to burst. The pain in her chest was the worst she could remember, and the fact that she could
really be dying was becoming a reality. Pushing the hut door open, she stumbled inside and dropped to her knees, her breath coming
in short harsh gasps. The room swam before her eyes as a wave of dizziness rushed over her.
Maybe she was too late. “Kaede!” Kagome rushed to the old woman’s side, trying to support her as she melted to the
floor. “What’s wrong? Why are you so hot?” “The forest, Kagome...something’s wrong with the forest... can’t you feel it?” Her head
dropped into the girl’s lap and her vision blurred. “The life energy...it’s dying. I think I’m dying
with it.” “I...” “Feel it with your soul, girl. You’re a Miko inside your soul... you’ve closed yourself off
from the world since Inuy-yasha left, but now you need to feel it again. I’m too old, my power is
weak. You must do this.” “Do what, Kaede? I don’t understand.” Tears trailed down Kagome’s face. “What do I
have to do?” “Help Inuyasha, Kagome.” “Help Inu...? What are you talking about?” “I don’t know what has happened, Kagome, but the life structure of the forest and the world
has been upset. Something has occurred out of place and time and must be repaired. Inuyasha is t-trying to do that, but there is a hindrance to him. Help him. Help him or everything that is now and
in the future will never be.” “Tell me what to do, Kaede. Tell me...” “Send him your Miko energy, Kagome. Send him your soul. He dies even as we speak.
Should his life force leave this world, the Western Lands will die and the future of your world will
fall into ruin.” “I... Kaede?” The old woman lost consciousness, leaving Kagome alone with her fears and
confusion. What did she mean, ‘if Inu dies, the future will fall into ruin? What has happened?
What is going on? What is he doing? Kami-sama...’ Turning her energies inward toward the core
of her being, Kagome searched for the center of her soul where the power of her Miko gifts lay
sleeping. Kaede was right. She had closed everything off since Inuyasha left that night to go back to
Sesshoumaru. Her grief at losing his affections and companionship were devastating and her only
defense was to close herself off from her emotions. As her spiritual self spiraled down the silver-string of her soul, Kagome could feel her body
growing warmer and more pliant. It had been too long since she embraced her true self and she
realized with a pang that she missed the sensations of being connected with the world. But as she
dove into the shimmering incandescent pool of her inner spirit, she felt the stabbing agony of the
wrongness Kaede tried to tell her about. It knifed through her heart like a burning sword, wrenching
a scream of pain from the core of her being, and she clutched at her heart, doubling over. It was there, spread out before her like a scene of a play flashing by on a video tape. She
could see Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru as lovers, holding each other with love and tender passions,
and the world around them burst with life energies in a way she had never known before. It was
glorious and beautiful. The living matrix of life surrounding them literally exploded with energy
and grew in strength ad power, and there was a cleansing that passed over Sesshoumaru, leaving his
youkai a pale blue, surrounded by brilliant gold. In loving his brother so fiercely, all traces of evil
and hatred were washed away, leaving his soul purified and filled with light. Inuyasha had healed the pain and bitterness of Sesshoumaru’s tortured soul. Kagome began to cry. Then the images changed, and she saw Inuyasha carrying a limp and lifeless Sesshoumaru
through a down pour of rain, his face taunt with worry and fear. She watched as he gently laid the
Youkai on his bed and removed his wet clothing, and then crawled up to cradle him lovingly against
his chest. The spiritual glow around Sesshoumaru was fading before her eyes, and Kagome realized
with horror that he was dying. ‘No!’ Tender words, tender touches, and then the blue and golden glow faded, leaving the great
Youkai Lord dead in his brothers arms. Inuyasha began to scream and cry. He seized the body and
buried his face against the broad chest, sobbing uncontrollably. It was more than Kagome could
bear. The pain inside her heart and soul was worsening with each passing moment, and she felt as if
she might succumb to it and lose consciousness. She watched days pass while Inu laid in vigil over
the dead body until Rin somehow pulled him back to the world of the living. She saw him hold the
little girl and cry, and then she watched him seize the Ten-siega and try.... “Oh God... No! Inuyasha!” Kagome watched in horror as the sacred fang lashed out at the
hanyou, burning his body and sending its wrath through the castle of the Western Lands. Inuyasha
was dying. If she didn’t help him, the whole world would fall into chaos. There would be no youkai
to control the spiritual energies of the demons existing upon the lands. They would run wild and
unchecked. They would destroy everything and everyone. Kaede was right. Everything would be
lost, including the future and her home. Gently she laid the old woman’s head on the ground, and then stood up on shaky legs. The
pain was intense and her vision blurred, becoming a tunnel. ‘Must...stay...conscious.’ She told
herself firmly and reached into her soul for the strength to combat the pain. ‘Must...get...help.’ Kagome staggered, moaning under her breath and dragged her feet relentlessly over the
ground. ‘Sango. Must...find...Sango. Need Kirara. Must...get...to the...castle.’ ********** “UNCLE INU?!” Rin screamed, trying to get close enough to the convulsing hanyou to grab
the sword, but the jagged bolts of electricity wouldn’t give her an inch. The odor of burning flesh
and smoke filled the room and she gagged. She had to do something before the Ten-siega killed
him, but what? Her small mind raced, and then an idea sparked.
‘Sesshoumaru-sama’s tail...’ She thought, turning and spotting the yards of fluff laying
across the bed. Dashing to the side, she grabbed the furry appendage and quickly wrapped it around
herself like sari, and then she looked at her uncle. Courage and fear intermixed in her pounding
heart as she considered her next action. Praying the tail would protect her, she dove through the blue
lightening and grabbed the hilt of the sword below Inuyasha’s hand. Pulling with all her might, Rin
grit her teeth and tried to wrench the Ten-siega free, but it resisted, so she grasped it with both hands
and yanked as hard as she could. As it tore free of Inu’s burnt hand, Rin staggered backwards,
falling on her butt, the sword dropping precariously in her fur covered lap. Inuyasha collapsed to the floor unmoving, smoke rising from his burned flesh like a silver
serpent, signaling the end of all things bright and true. *********** He wasn’t sure where he was, but it was dark. Dark as the pitch black of a tomb, it was. ‘Tomb?’ His mind coiled around the word, cradling it, stroking it. It meant something
important to him, but what? A growl of frustrated anger slipped over his lips and he clicked his
fangs. ‘Where is Myouga? That worthless flea...he’s either underfoot to the point of annoyance,
or absent when needed. Bloody useless insect.’ Another frustrated growl and he tried to sit up, but found himself completely confined inside
some sort of compartment. ‘What the hell?’ He traced his hands along the sides and then the top. It
allowed just enough room for him to move his joints, but he couldn’t turn over. If he didn’t know
better he would think he was in a... tomb? Suddenly he was besieged by a flood of images as his mind opened and the river of his
memories poured free. Izayoi... the angelic beauty of her face and those luminescent lavender eyes. How much
he loved her. His heart and arms ached for her, cried for her, but something told him she was
gone. The images of a lunar eclipse swam before him and he felt the pain of a dozen arrows
pierce his flesh as he slammed the Tessiega into the ground, loosing the KAZE NO KIZU,
destroying the front wall and gate to the fortress. He knew she was inside, he’d come to take her
away, save her before they killed her for bearing him a child. A child? His child... his son...
INUYASHA! He moaned and clutched a fist to his heart as pain shot through him. He saw fire.
Fire everywhere, and his beautiful Izayoi was dead, his son wailing in her dead arms. He had
begged the Ten-siega for her life, pleading with his broken heart for it to bring her soul back and
heal the wounds of her body. Blessedly she awoke and he lifted her and the babe from the floor,
wrapping them in the sacred fire-rat robe. But they did not escape...it was not meant to be.
Perhaps he’d known that from the beginning, he wasn’t sure. He’d gone to her aide, badly
wounded knowing he would die, but knowing he had to save her. Love made him strong, and
love would see her to safety as he faced the enemy who’d taken her life. Setsuna no Takemaru.
They would burn in hell together... but Izayoi and Inuyasha would live. That was all that had
mattered. “I am dead,” he whispered, pressing a hand to the cap stone of his tomb. “I have been sealed
inside my tomb, yet I live.” Confusion filled his mind and he brought his other hand to bear,
pressing it beside its mate. “Izayoi.” Her name fell from his lips as the strength of his muscles
bunched together and then surged upward, heaving the lid off the tomb and throwing it to the side,
shattering it as it struck the floor. The effort pulled a grunt from him and he lay still for a moment,
then sat up. It was the Royal Tomb. The Chamber beyond the Black Pearl where the Lords were
sealed when they died. All around him were stone tombs, each holding the remains of one of his
ancestors. Generations of them rested inside the massive vault, and he suddenly felt as though he
were invading a sacred place with his presence. How long had he been here? How was it that he
was fully intact if he’d perished in the blaze that took the fortress? He should have naught but ashes. It was confusing, but nontheless, he was here and quite in one piece. Inu noTashio stepped
free of his tomb and slid to the floor. He was a little wobbly but otherwise in good health. His
clothing remained intact as well, and was a vibrant blue gi with white sakura blossoms, and deep
purple hakama. His boots were also well preserved but would need some breaking in. As he
reached to test the security of his belt, he realized he was without sword one. At that point, a vague
memory came to him of the Sou’unga being sealed in the underworld by Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha
when they combined the power of the Ten-siega and the Tessaiga. He wondered how the two of
them felt about each other? He knew Sesshoumaru resented his love for a human woman to the
point of hatred for the unborn child she carried. An uneasy feeling settled in Tashio’s chest as his thoughts turned inward. It was true then.
Izayoi was long dead. He could feel it deep inside his soul–the emptiness. Inuyasha was a man full
grown when he and Sesshoumaru sealed the Sou’unga away, but there was no mistaking the tension
between the brothers. Then he started to wonder what it was that brought him back. Only the Ten-siega had the power to restore life, but Sesshoumaru would never do that. He was too greedy for the
power being Lord of The Western Lands offered to him. He would never consider bringing his
father back to life. Would he? Tashio looked around the vault carefully. There was no one inside it but him. Something
very wrong was happening. No one stood over him or near him with the Ten-siega, so how was it he
was alive? Too many questions without answers. He turned and pushed the door open, leaving the
vault and tombs behind. The answers weren’t there. They would be at the castle with his son, so he
would have to go there to find them. It felt good to have a breeze on his face once more, and he’d forgotten how wonderful the
aroma of sakura blossoms and roses smelled. The castle wasn’t far. It would be nice to stretch his
muscles. *************** The firecat raced through the air, running at her top speed, Kagome, Sango, and Miroko
perched on her back. Kagome sat hunched over in pain, Sango holding her trembling form to keep
her from falling off as they sped toward the castle. She hadn’t been able to tell them very much
about what was going on. All she’d said was Inuyasha was in terrible danger, Sesshoumaru was
dead, and if she didn’t get the castle very quickly, the world was going to die. She asked for
Kirara’s help to fly her there. The firecat was more than willing, but Sango was insistent she and
Miroko go too. She was worried about Kagome. She had never seen her friend look so pale or
appear so weak.
“How much farther, Sango?” Miroku leaned forward, looking over the demon huntress’
shoulder in concern. He didn’t like the way Kagome looked either. “She doesn’t look like she’ll
last much longer.” “I don’t think it can be much farther.” Sango looked ahead and pointed. “Just over the
mountains, I think.” “Ne, wonder it takes Inuyasha four days to get there. I didn’t realize it was such a trek.” “I thought you’d been there, Miroku?” “Iie. I have never traveled as far as the Castle of The Western Lands. I’m not that fond of
Lord Sesshoumaru. He never had much tolerance for us Monks, so we try to stay out of his way.” “Hmm,” Sango threw him a tolerant look over her shoulder. “I wonder why he doesn’t like
Monks? Couldn’t have anything to do with the fact your all out to convert ever living soul AND
demon, could it?” Miroku shrugged and offered a sheepish smile. “Thought so. No wonder he
doesn’t like you. Don’t you know, dog demons pretty much worship their own deities? And they
aren’t Buddha.” “Found that out...” “Uh-huh... the hard way?” “Of course.” He smiled and dropped his chin on her shoulder. “They worship their own
God. A great dog demon called Inuphysis. There’s quite a history of spiritual significance to him if
you’d care to hear it sometime.” “I’ll pass. Dog demons and their dog God’s don’t sound exceptionally interesting to me...” “Sango-chan...” Kagome’s faint voice interrupted the conversation as she sat up, trying to
see where they were. “Have we reached the Western Lands yet?” “Almost, Kagome-chan. I think we are very close. Are you alright?” The worry in Sango’s
voice transmitted itself to her arms and she hugged Kagome a little closer. “Do you know what
you’re doing?” “Hai, I know. Just get me to the castle. I have to get to the castle.” “We’re almost there. Hang on, we’re almost there.” ********** Tashio entered the castle as he always had, right through the front doors, and promptly ran
into a stunned, gapping, stuttering Myouga. The flea-demon stood on a table in the foyer where he
was trying to write a message on a sheet of parchment. The ink pooled and soaked into the weave as
he held the quill in shocked, dead hands. “May I inquire as to what you’re trying to write, Myouga? Because whatever it is, or was,
you’ve made a complete mess of it. But then, you never were much good at scripting letters. Jaken
was much better as I recall, although he was exceedingly annoying.” “M-my L-lord?” Myouga stuttered, dropping the quill and blinking his round, but eyes in
disbelief. “L-lord Tash-shi?” “Of course, you imbecile. Who else would I be?” Tashio felt the beginnings of irritation
snapping at his patience and took a deep breath. “Where is my son?” “Lord Sesshoumaru or Lord Inuyasha?” Tashio looked at the flea with confused impatience. “What are you telling me, flea? Are
they both here. “Hai, my lord, but...” Myouga choked on his words and lowered his eyes. “You have
returned to a time of tragedy, my lord. Your house has fallen into chaos and dismay.” “Chaos? Dismay?” Tashio reached out and grabbed the flea with one hand and raised it so
he could look the little demon in the eye. “Explain yourself, Myouga. What has happened to my
sons?” Stuttering sobs dribbled out of the miserable flea’s mouth as he related the events of the past
weeks to the newly resurrected dai-youkai in as complete detail as he could. He finished with the
last two days and Inuyasha’s failed attempt at using the Ten-siega to bring Seeshoumaru back from
the dead. “I was writing a letter to the village healer to come and help. Perhaps Lord Inuyasha can yet
be saved...despite the burns.” Myouga’s voice broke and he burst into sobs. “They had grown so
close, my lord. Closer than you can imagine. We all knew it was an unnatural thing for them to
share such an intimacy, but they were so happy together. Many men take other men as lovers in our
lands...but brothers are unheard of. This we all know but none of us had the heart to try and
separate them from each other.” Watery eyes sought out the burning amber crystals of the great
Youkai. “Forgive us.” “They are... lovers?” Tashio’s voice was low and hesitant. “Hai.” “And you say this human girl Inuyasha loved rejected him because of that?” “Hai. She would not accept what happened between he and Lord Sesshoumaru.” “And Inuyasha chose his brother over a life with the girl?” “Hai. He would not give up the relationship...even for her.” “And this has occurred after the two of them have been at each others throats for over a
hundred and fifty years?” “Hai. Always they have sought each others death. Mortal enemies. Lord Sesshoumaru
wanted the Tessaiga and to purify the youkai blood of his family by getting rid of his hanyou
brother, and Inuyasha wanted to be rid of his brother because of so many years of physical abuse
when he was a pup.” “Abuse? What abuse?” Golden eyes narrowed into slits and Tashio’s voice lowered to a
menacing growl. “Why would Sesshoumaru have access to his brother when he was a pup?” “His mother died when he was only eight years old. Sesshoumaru took him in and kept him
until he was eighteen or so.” Myouga shuddered in the face of the molten glare. “He–he often raped
and beat the pup because of his hatred. Inuyasha suffered for many years. It made him very strong
in his determination and will to fight, but it was a difficult way to grow up.” “And yet he forgave his brother these atrocities and learned to love him as much as you
say?” “Indeed, my lord. They learned to love each other. Lord Sesshoumaru was just as much
enthralled with Inuyasha. That is why this is all so tragic...” “Explain.” “He died of a broken heart, my lord. Lord Sesshoumaru died because he could no longer
live with what he’d done to his brother in the past. He couldn’t forgive himself, and it destroyed his
spirit and his will to live. That is what killed him. His over whelming love for his brother was not
great enough to out weigh his self loathing for what he used to be, and it broke his heart. He died in
Lord Inuyasha’s arms.” “And he has all but given up his own life trying to bring him back.” Tashio closed his eyes
as grief and understanding flooded through him. “They were willing to die for each other, ne?” “Hai.” “Then we must fix this, Myouga. We must save my sons.” As Tashio turned toward the
massive staircase, two humans stumbled through the doorway, supporting a third between them.
Something about them was vaguely familiar but he didn’t have time to stop and figure out what it
was. “Who are you?” he demanded. “What are you doing here?” TBC
